Zero no Tsukaima: Episode 5

Impressions:
I am getting sick of Louise’s temper and her whip. Why can’t she just realise her feelings for Saito just a little to stop her from going nuts on him every time? I’m sure she already does have feelings for him and just doesn’t know it yet. I was hoping Saito had been able to impress the audience during the fair. It was the perfect time – he had already yelled out in Louise’s defence, which should have made her think “Oh my god! He’s standing up for me, maybe he’s better than I though,” but no, she had to get angry again and drag him off the stage. But then again, just swinging around a sword wouldn’t have impressed anyone in the first place… well, it wouldn’t have impressed me at least. It’s been five episodes and Saito has only been impressive once. Saito better be the one who returns the Staff of Destruction next episode when they go after Fouquet…

Summary:
In the middle of the night, a cloaked woman lands on top of a building and casts a spell on the roof, turning it to sand. She drops down silently; the whole thing went unnoticed. She swipes a handful of jewels and is able to make it safely back outside before a commotion starts. Her name is: Fouquet, the Crumbling Dirt.
Louise is trying to teach Saito how to act formally, but making him think about it makes him walk awkwardly. Louise sighs, whining about how horrible Saito is at everything. The Annual Evaluation Fair is nearing and Louise had forgotten to discuss this with Saito. The aim of this fair is to show off the student’s familiars, which is why Louise is trying to teach Saito how to behave. Louise had thought about getting Saito to do a speech as his trick, but seeing how informally he talks, it’d probably be impossible. Saito says he has recently learnt a new trick, which gets Louise excited. Saito’s trick, however, is the profound ability to wash Louise’s underwear. He makes a joke out of this, causing Louise to get out her whip again. As she is whacking him, Saito knocks over his talking sword, Derflinger, which makes Louise remember that he can weild a sword. Saito says he had thought he could as well, which is why he went to Mott’s mansion, but apparently he just can’t. Thinking about this, Louise remembers that she should’ve been punished for allowing Saito to break into a Noble’s mansion, yet there hasn’t been anything yet.
Outside, Saito practices his sword swing as Louise attends class. It appears that Derflinger is too heavy for him. As he is lying on the ground, talking to Derflinger, Siesta appears above him wondering if he’s training for the fair. On sight of her, Saito remembers their last encounter, when Siesta had kissed him. He blushes at the thought of this, but Siesta does not seem uncomfortable talking with him. Saito wonders how she knew what he was doing. Siesta says she knew because everyone is practicing for the fair, especially so because Princess Henrietta will be attending.
In the headmaster’s office, Ms Longueville is giving a report on the preparations for the fair. Osman (the headmaster), however, is more interested in what colour underwear Ms Longueville is wearing. He sends his mouse to go take a peek, but Ms Longueville is aware of his motives and plants her foot down to scare the mouse (whose name is Montsognir). She then advances on Osman with a slightly disturbing smile.
Saito and Siesta pass the groups of students as they are practicing, talking about the Princess and how she’s been idol to her citizens since her father died. She says the maids and cooks are very busy with preparations for the festival, so she needs to go and help. Before she leaves, she bids Saito good luck before running off.
Mr Colbert has placed the Royal Guards in charge of protecting the school. Ms Longueville inquires about this as she is worried about a rumor she’s heard regarding Fouquet, who might be after the Staff of Destruction. Mr Colbert reassures her that everything will be fine as he does not think anyone would attempt to rob a place when its protected by the Princess’s personal guards. He also mentions that a triangle cass mage – Fouquet – is not powerful enough to break into the treasure room.
The next day, the Princess arrives, greeted by the headmaster, staff and students. Guiche is admiring her beauty while Kirche believes she’s more attractive. Saito exclaims that she’s pretty cute. Louise tells him to be quiet. When he takes a look at her, he sees her looking at the Princess (actually she’s the Queen) with gleaming eyes. Henrietta approaches the headmaster and apologises for the sudden request (of staying for the fair). She says she especialy wants to see the students this year. Osman asks why. The Princess says that it’s a personal matter.
At night, Saito is showing Louise his skills at swinging a sword, but he only succeeds in showing he has none. He then suggests they go with the underwear washing again, which gets Louise mad. Before she can start whipping Saito again, there is a knock on the door. Saito goes to open it, but as soon as he turns the handle, a girl bursts in and embraces Louise. The girl just happens to be Henrietta. Louise had been Henrietta’s playmate when they were young. Louise acts all formal in front of her, but the Princess tells her it’s unnecesary. Saito cuts in on their reunion, having realised why Louise had wanted him to perform well – it was to appeal to the Princess. At this comment, Louise gets irritated. Surprisingly, she doesn’t use her whip this time. Instead, she beats him up unarmed. Henrietta says its ok and reveals she knows about the time when he broke into Mott’s house. It had been her who had pardoned Louise and prevented her from getting any punishment. She says that Louise had summoned a good familiar, but Louise claims it was the failure of her life.
During the fair, everyone puts on a great show, except Louise and Saito who just make fools of themselves. As they leave the fair, they encounter Fouquet, who had made an unsuccessful attempt at breaking the seal on the gate to the treasure room. She had summoned a giant, rock golem from the earth and tried to break in from the outside, but now that she’s caught sight of Louise and Saito, has diverted her attention to them. The golem brings its palm down on Louise, but Saito saves her and is grabbed by the giant. He tells Louise to run away but she refuses. She tries to cast a fireball on Fouquet, but ONCE AGAIN it ends up as an explosion, which totally misses the golem and instead gets the outside of the treasure room. Amazingly, the wall’s protective spell had been broken by the explosion, when before it wouldn’t crack even with the golem pounding it. At the fair, Henrietta requests that Tabitha fly her Sylph again, as she has won the competition. As she is flying, she sees Fouquet and the golem. Fouquet uses her golem to exploit the castle’s new weakness, bashing through the wall with ease. She grabs the Staff of Destruction, drops Saito and retreats. Tabitha saves Saito by catching him with her familiar. Louise is relieved to see him safe.
In the aftermath of these events, the teachers discuss the situation as the students stare at the giant hole in the wall in awe. Henrietta comes to see if Louise is alright, but must go soon to inform the Royal Court. Louise is worried that Henrietta will be held responsible for the theft of the Staff of Destruction. After she leaves, Saito asks Louise why she didn’t run away when he told her to. He had obviously been expecting a different answer, but Louise says it’s because a mage who abandons her familiar is not a mage.
Preview:
Well, it seems the students at the magic academy are going after Fouquet. Hopefully, Saito will get to show off then.
