Tsuyokiss: Episode 2

Tsuyokiss

Impressions:

I felt that the second episode is not as good as the first; not only the story, but the quality of the animation as well. The last part where Otome saves Sunao and blows up the motorbike is far too extreme. Yes, I know the show is not the type that strictly forbids such exaggeration, but I found it didn’t fit in with the rest of the show (yes I know it’s in the game, but I haven’t played it so this thought is just what I think). Leo didn’t make much of an appearance either – I thought he would be the male lead who Sunao ends up falling for (if she hasn’t already). Sure, the story might pick up later, but I was hoping for more character development. I would also like to mention the amount of fanservice in this episode (not to mention the ED, which will probably remain the same throughout the series). This episode is littered with it, and I suspect upcoming episodes will be as well.

Summary:

In a dream about when she was in primary school, Konoe Sunao is trying to convince the class to work together so they can create a better play for the school assembly. Most of the class just wants to do something random, but Leo stands up for her and says that if everyone works together, they can make something special. This convinces the class to go with Sunao’s idea. She is touched by Leo’s words and is on the verge of tears due to happiness, but when Leo calls her ‘Daikon’, her good mood disintegrates. She then dreams about everyone she knows calling her Daikon, which makes her fall out of bed, thus ending the dream.

Sunao tries to rush breakfast, which gets Honoka, her little sister, telling her that she should’ve gotten up earlier. Sunao replies saying that she has a lot of things she needs to do, which gives Honoka the impression that she has a crush on someone. Sunao reasons that she’s only just changed schools, so it’d be impossible to fall for someone already. With this, Honoka concludes that her sister must be talking about the play. Sunao says that she has come up with a good idea for the play, but keeps what it is a secret.

On the way to school, she bumps into Leo as she is thinking and falls onto the ground. Reo offers her his hand, but she instead replies by telling him he shouldn’t been standing around like that. Reo apologises, but Kani comes to defend him, saying that it was Sunao’s fault for not looking where she was going. The argument escalates and in the middle of it, Shinichi tries to appeal to Sunao, who rejects him instantly. Erika comes as well on her bike, which stirs the argument up even more. However, it is stopped when Otome arrives and asks them what the problem is. Completely off topic, Sunao asks Otome if the thing she’s leaning on is a Japanese sword. Apparently, Otome has permission to wield it at school.

During class, Erika brings up the topic about how Sunao is Leo’s close friend. He denies this and says he knew her 10 years ago. Erika then comments on how it would be better if Sunao had larger breasts. Shinichi reveals his knowledge about her breasts and says they’re as small as Kani’s, which obviously gets her pissed. Sunao can here all this despite being in a separate classroom, and is trying her best to suppress her building rage. Murata comes with Noriko and tells her that she shouldn’t listen to those guys from 2-C. Sunao tries to remember his name but says his name in the wrong order (Tamura instead of Murata). He is about to introduce Noriko as well, but it Sunao already knows it. She asks the group to help her put up posters about the Theatre Fan Club she’s making, as her Theatre Club was rejected.

As Sunao is putting up flyers (multiple flyers on the same space? How stupid…) Otome sees her and asks if she has permission from the chief to put up the flyers. She doesn’t so she runs off to get it. However, before she can go very far, Otome stops her and tells her that she has to take all the flyers down first. After that, she heads to the chief’s office to ask for permission. She is determined to form the Theatre Fan Club, and seeing this, the chief agrees and gives his stamp of approval.

And so, she spends the day putting up flyers and handing them out, though no one accepts one…

At the end of the day at the beach with Shizuka, Sunao goes over her lack of progress. Shizuka tells her that it was mostly due to the fear of being targeted by the Student Validation committee. Sunao is surprised to hear this (as well as Leo, who is sitting at another table). This only makes Sunao more determined to attract people to her club. She tells Shizuka to cheer her on tomorrow as she’ll be doing an exhibition performance. However, tomorrow is the uniform festival, which means everyone will watch that instead. Shizuka tries to warn Sunao, but she has already run off.

At the Student Council building, Leo asks Kani to tell Sunao to change the date of her exhibition. He says that they’ll get into a fight if he tries to tell her. Yoshimi thinks that Sunao hates the Student Council for the Theatre Club incident. Leo then asks Nagomi to tell Sunao as she hasn’t seen her yet. She refuses, which initiates an argument between her and Kani. In the end, nothing gets resolved.

The next day, Sunao manages to bring her heavy equipment up the hill to school. Outside the front entrance, she encounters Otome and tells her that she got permission to bring the equipment. However, that’s not the problem. Sunao notices a few guys staring eagerly at a banner over the school’s entrance. It says “Ryumei school uniform festival, today at lunch. The festival is to determine which uniform will be used next year, so basically it’s a fashion parade. Sunao immediately accuses Erika for purposely putting the festival on that day, but Otome informs her that the event was planned six months ago, which means it was not just to piss Sunao off. This reminds Otome of the time when Erika had made her where a swimsuit at last year’s uniform festival. Otome also mentions that the festival is not compulsory and she won’t be going. This gives Sunao her confidence back somewhat.

When Sunao meets with her friends during break, she is asked if she’s really going to do it today. She says that since she said she’ll do it, she will.

The festival starts and it looks like everyone in the school went to watch. Sunao does her performance despite having Tsuchinaga-san as her only viewer (the talking bird). After she finishes performing for him, a gang of motorists stop in front of the school, looking for Otome. He demands that Otome be brought out at once so they (the Matsukasa federation) can give her a ‘present’. The boss rips Sunao’s curtains and she demands that he fix it. He refuses and suddenly, Sunao (and Shizuka, who had bee helping with the show) find themselves surrounded by the gang. She says that she isn’t afraid of people who can’t do anything by themselves, so the boss does not hesitate to throw a punch at her. The punch does make contact, but not with Sunao’s face. Instead, it is blocked by Otome. After taking care of the leader, Tsuchinaga-san delivers a message from the chielf to Otome, telling her to use her sword against the gang. The motorists try to flee on their bikes, but even that is not enough to escape from Otome. She catches up to them and uses her Devil’s Butterfly to destroy the motorbikes.

Afterward, Otome reveals that she had been watching Sunao’s play the whole time. She had been watching from the roof as she thought Sunao hated the Student Council (which she’s in). Sunao admits that she does, but also says that Otome is different. It seems the two become friends from then on…

I’m okay with the cliche explosion bit soley for the fact that the show feels so visually dull the rest of the time (dunno why.. it’s certainly got enough bright colors).. so if they gotta throw in some stuff that feels a bit out of place to liven it up, then go for it
