Impressions:
The one thing that makes Tokimeki Memorial stand out is its eccentric school. It’s not just some ordinary high school with ordinary people and an ordinary harem keeper, but one where everything is out of whack and hilarious; the head accessories being the major thing. However, the thing that I fell in love with as soon as I saw it was that chick! No, not a girl ‘chick’ but the baby chicken ‘chick’. How cool is he? I couldn’t stop laughing when he appeared, especially the part where he beat the crap out of that tough guy. His babble is hilarious too and gives makes the show much more lively and energetic, even though he only got about a minute or two of air time. (Btw, is this a harem or not? It seems like one, though I’ve been reading that this may not be the case).
With any great thing comes a not so great thing. In Tokimeki’s case, it’s the very simple and plain character design as well as the impracticality of the lead’s extremely fast relational development with his small harem. As for Mina, going all red and telling her dreams to some stranger without even knowing that person’s name is pretty unrealistic if you ask me. Can’t there be a normal girl for once? I’m sick of harems where all the girls have such diverse personalities that there is no ‘average’ girl; someone who is not exceptionally nice, not easily embarrassed, does not blush and become all girly when taking to the lead (at the start at least), does not do well in everything, does not suck at everything etc…you get my point. Note that I am not saying the girls in this anime are like that; it’s just an example. Also, because of that, I’d say my favourite harem option would probably be Tsukasa, the red haired girl, as she seems to be the most normal.
Animation-wise everything was very good, though the running could have been improved on. The OP and ED are both pretty good and very suitable for such an anime. The use of glare and filtering light makes everything seem much livelier, instead of just plain light and dark colours for shadowing. Overall, I enjoyed the show quite a lot and am definitely going to follow this (and blog it). As for the personalities thing, I’ll get over it and then everything will be fine. I can always look for more serious shows for more probable personalities. It seems that next episode will focus on Tsukasa – yay! And hopefully more of Chick-kun as well lol.

Actually, this is a replica of a game made hella years ago, so basically it’s the start of a lot of stereotypes in anime. I don’t know a lot about it, but i’m guessing all the whacky shit we saw in this episode, spawned a lot of slice-of-life situations in animes that have high school related storylines. The thing that amazed me the most, was the amount of unique characters that were floating around, I was staring in awe.
