Impressions:
I found out about this show on Retsgip’s Anime Blog (of course from Darkshaunz’s post by the movie of the same title in English). At first, I had no idea what to make of it, as after typing the name in Tokyotosho, nothing came up. I thought perhaps Darkshaunz, knowing how he is, was pulling a prank. However, it soon became clear that the show was indeed real after browsing google and Wikipedia. Of course, after finding out about this and reading about how good it is, I just had to download for myself. After getting it from Tokyotosho, this time having used the Japanese name. And after watching it, I can say…it was AWESOME!!
Yes I know that’s somewhat of a childish way for me to put it, saying it’s ‘awesome’, but indeed it is. The quality is as expected of movie standards, but it’s the powerful plot, scripting and character development that made me fall in love with it. Not long ago, I watched the first third of 5cm Per Second, which astounded me with its sad story and spectacular quality. It’s similar this time as well, except the high quality is replaced by the character development. I was disappointed with the sad ending though, as throughout the movie I was hoping for everything to turn out nicely. If time travel can be such a simple thing, surely a happy ending was plausible…I guess not really.
Makoto is definitely an interesting character, and her personality is very believable for an anime construction. I never expected Chiaki to be important throughout the movie, but it turns out it was him who had caused everything. After getting through the initial confusion with the time travel and all, you immediately become familiarised with the characters, which will overall heighten your enjoyment of the amusing time leaping scenes. Well that’s certainly what happened with me. And of course, halfway in, the comedy becomes more of a drama as everything starts falling apart in Makoto’s world. It’s comedy and drama in one package!
I really don’t know what else to say, except to watch this movie. It’s based on a manga or something isn’t it? I would sure like to read that. The story sounds like it would make for an excellent novel as well. Ah well. Oh, I forgot about a summary, but I guess there should be a suitable one floating around on the internet (such as Darkshaunz’s post xD). But for a shorter one: Makoto is an average high school girl…(sound familiar?) until one day she finds that she is able to leap through time at will. With this new ability, she decides to have fun and solve a few problems along the way. But with this comes many consequences and tragedies as she soon finds out…

If memory serves me correctly, the movie is based the manga adaptation, which is based on the novel.
Thank God someone noticed this. I noticed it back in a NewType like a year ago and tried to find some good info on it. But that was kinda hard, then again I thought it was a series. But the main thing for me is the character designs so I was tring to find some good screencaps. The animation looks great and I need to find a site where you can load it. Youtube might have it.
Shirukii is right. The story’s been made into a movie before too I think back in the 90’s, but this is the first time it’s been animated. If you’re going to watch it subbed (and I agree totally with Novastorm’s score – so watch it!) – then get the nice 2Gb version in glorious h264 that’s floating about on tokyo tosh – not the 6-700Mb version (a search on ‘kakeru’ should have it at the top of the list). You’ll want to keep it at least until the DVD comes out in your area, and you’ll want a good version.
I was one of those poeple who saw it Darkshaunz’s post and decided to give the show a try. Though I’ll probubly only end up adding a comment over here cause it’s already old news over at Retsgip’s site.
Somehow my first try at downloading it gave me a Russian hardsub, thus the main reason it took me forever to finally see it.
But I have to say when all is said and done, this movie was, as you said, “amazing.” But I find a part that was inconsistant, something that ALL time travel stories will have.

But I’ll give it slack since all time travel stories to my knowledge have inconsistancies and when measured against how well done the rest of it is, it really doesn’t matter.
So yes anyone even thinking about watching this movie SHOULD totally do it.
^_^ Now to go force this thing upon my unsuspecting friends. I just hope half of them don’t fall asleep like they did when I showed, “The Place Promised in Our Early Days.” (Though this time I probubly won’t be showing it to them at 1am on New Years day.)

Oh, I see what you mean.

Maby I look into things too much. I just didn’t think that the movie was inconsistent at all. In fact, I thought they tried to fill in the gaps at some points.
awesome movie; and I’m still only halfway
thanx danny ! otherwise I would have never seen it
Watched this movie last Saturday, and it’s easily become one of my favorite anime movies of all time.
BTW didn’t anyone noticed how : Auntie Whitch could possible a version of an older Makoto
Who is trying to recreate the painting for Chiaki.
Look at the 3-man picture which is shown.
3 people wich looks like olders versions of Makoto ; chiaki and the 3th guy.
or maybe I’m thinking to much
i dont think so scoro, since from we could see, i think we’re meant to assume that you can only have one ‘you’ at any time. whenever makoto leapt, she replaced her other self in that time.
Auntie Whitch is the protagonist of the original novel. Show Spoiler ▼

type in Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (:
[...] Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (aka: 時を??る少女, TokiKake) I heard a lot of praise for the movie, saying it was “a powerful film“, “absolutely superb“, and even “awesome“, all of which I pretty much agree with. It’s apparently a sort-of sequel to an earlier novel by Tsutsui Yasutaka, The Girl Who Conquered Time, and the author himself praises the movie. TokiKake, while mostly containing slice-of-life elements, it also contained quite a bit of sci-fi. Time travel in particular. I don’t want to go into specifics, but I liked the way they handled it – they kept the scope limited to just what was happening in Makoto’s immediate vicinity. There existed the possibility of going too deep into it; thus, the movie would end up like a half-hearted ramble on time-space, rather than expounding on the plot and characters – the latter being what that the movie did really well. I thought that Makoto’s rather extravagant use of her time leaps early on in the movie was pretty shallow, but as it progressed, she tried to use these leaps more responsibly by trying to help other people (though they often end up in failure anyway). The twist at the end regarding Chiaki was quite surprising and I think that was able to tie up a lot of the loose ends regarding the time leaps. I don’t know why, but I enjoyed this more than I did Byousoku. Perhaps it was just bad timing, as I got into this first, which meant I had nothing to compare it to, whilst Byousoku was competing with this and Oukashou, its first half. [...]

@Gold Flash
The painting is known as A Picture of White Plum, Camellia, and Chrysanthemum. iwanihana.info has an image (look under the tag: Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo).
@ rein
Check mangahelpers for the manga. There should be a link to a site where someone has scanned the manga based on the original novel (2 volumes, telling the story of Kazuko Yoshiyama – Makoto’s Auntie Witch) and the movie (1 volume, on Makoto’s story).
