Summer 2007 Preview!

Last time, my predictions and expectations of which shows I would like proved accurate most of the time. However, I ended up failing at blogging the shows I really liked, as I had already foolishly filled up my to-blog animes list with shows I had the most confidence in, as opposed to actually watching them first and seeing how good they were. I would have replaced Nagasarete Airantou and Gigantic Formula with Claymore and sola, and most likely would have blogged Kaze no Stigma and Gurren Lagaan as well. I hope to be a bit more organised this season though, and lower and raise my expectations for the seemingly good and seemingly bad shows respectively, to give more animes a chance.

Anyway, if people are wondering, I will probably only be able to take up about 4 shows, since I am definitely getting more busy in life and am lagging behind quite a bit on the shows I’m doing now. I spent my blogging time recently in doing this as well…

Tetsuko no Tabi

Japanese Title: 鉄??旅
Genre(s): Comedy
Episodes: 13
First Air Date-Time: 6/24 – 10:10AM
OP: “Nanka Ari Kamo Ne” by SUPER BELL”Z
ED: “Ooi Naru Tabiji” by SUPER BELL”Z
Producer(s): Group TAC
Source Material: Manga
Official Site: http://www.tetsuko.jp/

Probability of watching this: Average
Probability of blogging this: Low

Apparently this is based on a manga, which illustrates the real life adventures of the mangaka, having supposedly visited all the train stations in Japan or something. Doesn’t sound very interesting, but the uniqueness does seem quite promising, so I am willing to give this show a go. It’s only 13 episodes as well, so it shouldn’t be dragged out. The mangaka himself has seemed to admit that his escapades aren’t exactly that entertaining though…

Nanatsuiro Drops

Japanese Title: ????? ドロップス
Genre(s): Fantasy, Mahou Shoujo
First Air Date-Time: 7/03 – 1:40AM
OP: “Shining stars bless” by Kaori Utatsuki
ED: “mo.o!” by LOVERIN TAMBURIN
Producer(s): Geneon, Studio Barcelona
Source Material: Game
Official Site: http://www.nanatsuiro.com/

Probability of watching this: High

The story seems kinda complicated, but essentially it’s about a guy who becomes a stuffed animal at night, and needs to collect star droplets with the help of a special girl in his class. It certainly seems quite unique with the whole stuffed animal thing, but I hope this means the show will actually be good. I’m looking forward to this simply because the picture looks good. xD

Buzzer Beater

Japanese Title: ??
Genre(s): Science-fiction, shounen, sports (basketball)
Episodes:
First Air Date-Time: 7/04 – 12:56AM
Producer(s): Buzzer Beater Project, TMS Entertainment
Source Material: Previous anime (remake)
Official Site: http://www.ntv.co.jp/buzzer/

Probability of watching this: Below Average

In a world where basketball is being taken over by alien teams, a human team attempts to win all the glory back. Or something like that anyway. I’m not very interested at all, and most likely won’t even watch the first episode. The fact that there was already a screening in 2005 doesn’t excite me much either.

Doujin Work

Japanese Title: ドージンワーク
First Air Date-Time: 7/04 – 1:00AM
Producer(s): REMIC
Source Material: 4koma
Official Site: http://www.doujin.tv/

Probability of watching this: Above Average
Probability of blogging this: Low

Honestly, both the title and the art seem pretty sweet. The word ‘doujin’ instantly captures my attention, and I’m not repulsed by some hideous creature in the images I’ve seen (I’m talking about animators drawing things badly, not anything else you might think). Also, the manga on which this anime is based on is actually a yonkoma, but I dunno if that’s a good or bad thing. I’m guessing as well that it’s about people writing doujins. In any case, it looks interesting enough so I’ll definitely give it a shot.

Kenko Zenrakei Suieibu Umisho

Japanese Title: ケンコー全裸系水泳部 ウミショー
Genre(s): Comedy, sports (swimming)
Episodes: 13
First Air Date-Time: 7/04 – 2:00AM
OP: “DOLPHIN JET” by Ayane
ED: “Splash BLUE ~ Taiy? to Lemonade” by Ayumi Murata
Producer(s): Artland
Source Material: Manga
Official Site: http://www.umisho.com/

As you all knows, summaries cannot be trusted, so I really can’t say for certain what this show is about. All I know (or assume) is that there is this guy who can’t swim and joins the swimming club in hope of learning how to. And to his surprise, and perhaps delight, he meets a fun-loving girl who likes to swim nude (which is a sure attraction to guys). This idea itself is interesting enough, and I’m sure the mischief involved will be pretty entertaining. I hope I’m right.

School Days

Japanese Title:
Genre(s): Drama, romance
Episodes: 13 + 3
First Air Date-Time: 7/04 – 2:15AM
OP: “Innocent Blue” by DeviceHigh
Producer(s): TNK, Marvellous Entertainment
Source Material: Game
Official Site: http://www.schooldays-anime.com/

Probability of watching this: High
Probability of blogging this: Average

This seems to be something that’s being hyped over, though I really don’t know much about it. Most of you readers probably know more than I do (I only recall reading about nasty endings and how this is based on a game). The word ’school’ always interests me as well, so I will definitely try this out. I find that hyped shows usually are good for me, such as Kanon, Lucky Star etc.

Zombie Loan

Japanese Title: ゾンビローン
Genre(s): Supernatural
First Air Date-Time: 7/04 – 2:40AM
OP: “OOKAMI no NODO” by The Birthday
ED: “Chain Ring” by MUCC
Producer(s): XEBEC M2
Source Material: Manga
Official Site: http://www.zombie-loan.com/

Probability of watching this: Above Average
Probability of blogging this: Low

What attracts me most is the art, which seems excellent to me. Wow, they even had wallpapers for download on their website…xD. I hope this does reflect well in the actual show. Zombie Loan is about a girl who has ‘Shinigami Eyes’ and can see when people are about to die, due to dark rings around their necks. She notices one day that two guys from her class have black rings, which means they should be dead. However, they reveal to her that they were given second chances at life by those from the Zombie Loan office, though the two must work as shinigami to pay back their debts…

Code-E

Japanese Title: ??
Genre(s): Comedy, romance, science-fiction
Episodes: 12
First Air Date-Time: 7/04 – 2:42AM
Producer(s): Studio Deen
Source Material: –
Official Site: http://avexmovie.jp/lineup/code-e/

Probability of watching this: Below Average
Probability of blogging this: Low

About a girl who has the strange ability to disrupt electronic equipment when she has emotional changes. She is discovered by a student at her school, and that student then begins obsessing over her ability. Frankly, this doesn’t seem very interesting, and the meganekko of a main character doesn’t isn’t to my liking (character-design-wise). I will give the first episode a shot though, definitely.

Mushiuta

Japanese Title: ムシウタ
Genre(s): Fantasy
Episodes: 12
First Air Date-Time: 7/06 – 12:00AM
OP: “Mushi-Uta” by Akatsuki
ED: “Sayonara” by Hiromi Sato
Producer(s): Beat Frog
Source Material: Novel
Official Site: http://www.wowow.co.jp/anime/mushi-uta/

Probability of watching this: Above Average
Probability of blogging this: Average

I was initially interested in this show due to some early images of it, though it seems they were probably from the novel (or manga). Anyway though, the concept is that there exist mushi (bugs) in the world, which infect people and give them supernatural powers or something. Amongst this, a guy encounters a girl some time after transferring schools, and finds himself to be strangely attracted to her (is it really not just a crush??) But yeah anyway, I don’t really know how everything fits together, but as long as the character design and quality isn’t bad, this should turn out to be something interesting.

Sky Girls

Japanese Title: スカイガールズ
Genre(s): Mecha, military, science-fiction
First Air Date-Time: 7/06 – 1:28AM
OP: “Virgin’s high” by MELL
ED: “True Blue” by Saori Goto
Producer(s): Konami
Source Material: OAV
Official Site: http://www.skygirls.konami.jp/

Probability of watching this: Very High
Probability of blogging this: Very High

The only concern I have with this is any quality problems. Other than that, I am highly anticipating this show, as I really enjoyed the OAV. This is something that actually features characters with a character design I like quite a lot, unlike most of the recent shows. If you haven’t seen the OAV, you should probably go and watch it. Sky Girls is based on (or the OAV was) a world with problematic monsters called ‘worms’, which are combated by three young mecha pilots (though I see four girls now…)

Potemayo

Japanese Title: ???よ
Genre(s): Comedy, slice-of-life
First Air Date-Time: 7/07 – 1:30AM
OP: “Katamichi Catchball” by MOSAIC.WAV
ED: “Utatane” by Chata
Producer(s): JC Staff
Source Material: 4koma
Official Site: http://www.potemayo.com/

Probability of watching this: Below Average
Probability of blogging this: Low

Well, being worked on by JC Staff is always a plus, but this 4koma-based anime about some female thing that can read minds and comes out of a fridge or something, doesn’t really interest me. The size of all the characters worries me as well, but hey, I might actually try this one out if I have nothing to do.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai

Japanese Title: ???ら?????頃?解
Genre(s): Horror, Mystery, Supernatural
Episodes: 24
First Air Date-Time: 7/07 – 2:30AM
Producer(s): Studio DEEN
Source Material: Game (sequel)
Official Site: http://www.oyashirosama.com/web/kai/

Probability of watching this: Very High
Probability of blogging this: Very High

This is definitely my most anticipated show of this season. I loved the first season, and this being a sequel, is a must watch for me and others who share my views. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai animates the last two chapters of the game which weren’t included in the first anime, and apparently also features an anime-original arc, which will hopefully be good. If you don’t know what this show is about, then you probably haven’t seen the first season, which I highly recommend you do.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

Japanese Title: ?よ?ら絶望先生
Genre(s): Comedy
Episodes: 12
First Air Date-Time: 7/08 – 11:30PM
OP: “Hito toshite Jiku ga Bureteiru” by Kenji Ohtsuki feat. Ai Nonaka, Marina Inoue, Yu Kobayashi, Miyuki Sawashiro & Ryoko Shintani
Producer(s): SHAFT
Source Material: Manga
Official Site: http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/zetsubou/

Seems to be a comedy about a depressed teacher—sounds fun to me. I guess this will be like any other comedy with episodic gags and such (sounds like Negima). I think the teacher works at an all girls school as well, which presents many opportunities for the old harem gags, but I’m not sure. It appears to be interesting enough, so I’ll definitely try this one out. The small episode count is also pretty reassuring that the quality will be decent.

Zero no Tsukaima: Futatsuki no Kishi

Japanese Title: ゼロ?使?魔 ~?月?騎士~
Genre(s): Comedy, Fantasy
Episodes: 12
First Air Date-Time: 7/09 – 12:30AM
OP: “I SAY YES” by ICHIKO
ED: “Suki!?Kirai!?Suki!!!” by Rie Kugimiya
Producer(s): JC Staff
Source Material: Novel (sequel)
Official Site: http://www.zero-tsukaima.com/

Probability of watching this: Very High
Probability of blogging this: Very High

I have to say I didn’t think the first season was that good (certainly not comparable to something like Shakugan no Shana). The only real reason I’ll definitely be blogging this is because I did the first season as well. And with JC Staff, it can’t be that bad. As long as it stays just as entertaining as last year, if not more, it should be fine.

Moetan

Japanese Title: も??ん
Genre(s): Comedy, Mahou Shoujo
First Air Date-Time: 7/09 – 1:30AM
OP: “Mahou Shoujo Magical-tan!” by Yukari Tamura, Kaori Nazuka & Haruka Tomatsu
Producer(s): Actus
Source Material: English Study Aid
Official Site: http://www.ink-chan.com/

Probability of watching this: Above Average
Probability of blogging this: Above Average

I’ve read everywhere about how this is based on an English language study aid, which means this should be quite fun. It will be interesting seeing how this actually turns out, and the word ‘moe’ in the title will probably attract quite a bit of attention. Apart from this I really don’t know what to expect, though I will be trying the first episode at least.

Mononoke

Japanese Title: モノノ怪
Genre(s): Horror
Episodes: 12
First Air Date-Time: 7/13 – 12:15AM
Producer(s): Toei
Source Material: –(third arc of Ayakashi Samurai Horror Tales)–
Official Site: http://www.mononoke-anime.com/

Probability of watching this: Low
Probability of blogging this: Low

Well, I haven’t seen Ayakashi, nor am I fan of these types of traditional looking shows, so I’ll have to give this one a skip. Also, it’s done by Toei, a very unfavourable production studio for me (mainly due to the low or ugly quality of their works—purely IMO).

Shigurui

Japanese Title: シグルイ
Genre(s): Drama, Historical
First Air Date-Time: 7/19 – 11:30PM
Producer(s): Madhouse Studios
Source Material: Manga
Official Site: http://www.wowow.co.jp/anime/shigurui/

A historical samurai anime that is apparently very violent. I dunno about this one, since I don’t usually like historical anime, though the thought of intense violence does seem interesting. I may check this one out as well.

Baccano!

Japanese Title: ?ッカーノ?
Genre(s): Adventure(?), Fantasy
First Air Date-Time: 7/27 – 12:30AM
OP: “Gun’s&Roses” by Paradise Lunch
ED: “Calling” by Kaori Oda
Producer(s): Brains Base, MediaWorks
Source Material: Novel

Short stories about alchemy and stuff in 20th century America? Well if that’s the case, it will be interesting to see how this setting is portrayed, and as usual, a large cast is always a plus for me. I’ll be watching the first few episodes of this as well if I can. Studios seem to be reliable as well.

Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho Tou Dai Ni Maku

Japanese Title: ?京魔人學園剣風帖 龖 第?幕
Genre(s): Action, Shounen, Supernatural
First Air Date-Time: 7/27 – 11:00PM
Producer(s): AIC Spirits, BeSTACK
Source Material: Game (sequel)
Official Site: http://www.majin.tv/

Probability of watching this: Very High
Probability of blogging this: Very High

I really enjoyed the first season (except the last episode), though the experience was brought down due to inconsistent and slow subbing, though I’m grateful that it was subbed at all. As long as this second season doesn’t screw up in terms of quality or animation (like the last episode in the first season), it should be a great watch.

Code Geass (eps 24 and 25)

Japanese Title: コードギアス ??逆?ルルーシュ
Genre(s): Mecha, Military, Science-fiction
Episodes: 25 (23 have already aired)
First Air Date-Time: 7/29 – 2:25AM
OP: “Hitomi no Tsubasa” by Access
Producer(s): Sunrise
Source Material: Anime original(?)
Official Site: http://www.geass.jp/

Probability of watching this: Very High
Probability of blogging this: Very High

The air date is according to here, and it should be pretty reliable, but don’t start flaming me if I’m wrong or something. Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing that last two episodes, as 22 certainly ended by injecting everyone with great suspense. Code Geass is a show that grows on you and gets better by miles, and hopefully it will finish with a bang.

After reading the first 3 chapters of Doujin Work(the tranlated ones) I now look forward to this show the most of the summer season.
*kicks School Days, Higurashi 2 and ZnT 2 a few places doen the list.

    It really is smeggin’ brilliant.
A bit like Konata’s part from Lucky Star, but then 10x ecchier and funnier. :D

Concluding: Go download those few chapters and you’ll see what I mean. ;)

I’m looking forward to school days, I’ve seen the game’s intro. Which is basicly an anime sized episode and it was really great. If the shows anything like the anime it should be good. Other then that not much catches my attention, I’ll be checking out Tokyo majin, Code Geass, and Zero no Tsukaima of course.

And yeah, Claymore is really good. Sure the character designs aren’t that good but it’s nothing less then the stuff in gigantic formula (Atleast to me heh)
Sola is just awesome, and ep 12 has one of the best fight scenes I’ve seen this season. Fear teh paper.

You’ve got yourself a typo in that poll of yours for Mononoke. I’m really looking forward to that show, by the way, since Bake Neko, the third arc of Ayakashi was really good, with a unique but high-quality art-style.

    Sola Wins ALLLLLLLLLLLL

As for the new season, School Days, Higurashi, and probably Zero even though I was never that great of fan of the first season.
Shows I plan to give a chance include Zombie Loan, Moetan, and Doujin Work.
And shows I probably won’t watch unless great things are said include Mushiuta, and Sky Girls……
And nothing else really catches my eye as of yet.

But I’m sure like always this will change once I actually see the shows…. Darn my inability to tollerate the character designs for Claymore. Pretty much the same reason I could never watch the Xenosaga anime even though I LOVE the games.
