Sky Girls: Episode 4

Rating: 7.8/10

Impressions:

Although there’s no action in this episode, the heavy focus placed on Karen more than makes up for it (for me anyway). The importance of the pen is evident, and it’s things like this that ultimately add more depth to characters and solidify their personalities. Takumi’s first appearance (not including the random ones of him taking pictures in the background before his first lines) makes it fairly obvious that he’ll be of some importance to the story, even if you haven’t seen the OAV, and most could have probably guessed that he’ll be the love interest of Karen (go Karen!!!) But isn’t Takumi just a cook in the OAV or something…?

Apart from Karen, Eika’s personality is developed immensely as well, as she actually acknowledges Otoha’s flying ability and agrees to go out with her and Karen. That’s not to mention her having fun with them as well. It’s quite apparent that their friendship will run deep (it’s been a month already now, so they should know each other fairly well by now). Otoha doesn’t change much, as her personality has just about been set completely already. Everyone’s attitude towards each other has probably already reached that of the OAV, which is a good thing as I never liked Eika’s tsuntsun side. Speaking of characters, I just noticed that the mechanic twins have Kansai accents!

Now the question is, when the hell are the worms gonna blast through the middle of the ocean and wreak havoc through the base, forcing some action from the three pilots? The mention of destruction caused by the worms in the city hopefully means the event is coming close. The next episode seems to feature some special event, though I can’t tell if it’s related to the worms, some other enemy or another foe-less obstacle. I’m also wondering about the fourth sonic diver pilot that’s in the OP and on the official website. She looks like the generic little brat to me, though hopefully I’m wrong since they are tremendously annoying.

I think this show needs a exterminate-all-worms-or-the-earth-gets-destroyed kind of storyline to be good. Doesn’t seem very likely that it’ll go that way though, but it seems to me like they don’t have a lot of storyline options, given that they don’t have proper antagonists – you can’t really show anything from the enemy side since they are just alien cyborgs – so the only thing they can do is just to appear and attack.

Or they could expand on that part of the OVA where they mentioned something about a secret expedition. A secret expedition to do something so as to ensure the annihilation of worms?

The way I see it, Sky Girls could be very good if the storyline is solid, if not it’ll just suck. And lousy storyline + no fanservice equals fail.

Fanservice to me means that the show tries to make up for a crap storyline or crap characters with ‘other’ things to please and attract an audience. Which is why I don’t like it. Though of course I agree with the storyline part, which has yet to really start…

The plot of this series is moving very slowly, but it still entertains me.

For 24 to 26 episodes series, the plot either moves slowly and has climax in the middle of the show (For example: Mai Hime, Busou Renkin) or the plot starts of quickly in the first couple episodes and then slow down in the middle (for example: Raxephon, Idol Master).

Personally, I like the first option better because I don’t want to be in the middle of the series and say “Damn, I waste my time watch this again.” So, be patient people. :)
