Pumpkin Scissors: Episode 9

Rating: 8/10
Impressions:
This episode has sparked some new hope within me. Although I already knew it would get better later on in the series, this episode makes me believe that that rise might come sooner. Even though this episode does not flow along with any form of plot, it does fit in with the ‘war relief’ theme, and actually makes a good watch. Being a double season series with no initial, fixed goal, it’s expected for these types of episodes to fulfil the majority of the first half of the series, and Pumpkin Scissors definitely needs more episodes like this. The mood of this episode is primarily dark and gloomy, and the foggy mornings do it wonders. I’m glad that Oreld is the focus of this episode, since as I have said before, he is the most interesting character if you exclude Alice since she’s annoying. This episode also depicts him in a caring manner, suggesting he has a deeper character than it seems. His difficult past must have shaped this aspect of him. It also goes to show he is quite a sensible, not to mention all round good person, when he’s not angry though (expect an unexpected fist to the face if you’re the one he’s angry at).

So now, which characters have had their own episodes now? Is it just Alice and Oreld? I don’t think Machs has had one yet, so expect one of him soon. That other girl with Mer-kun, the dog, will probably get an episode too, though it’ll most likely be or feel like a filler. I won’t be looking forward to that. So far, the only story that future can episodes can work on to reinitiate the overall plot is Alice and her fiancée, who is obviously evil. I hope that guy doesn’t get neglected until two-thirds of the way into the series when the need arises. He should get some more screen time with Alice and the other characters to help build everyone’s trust. There is also a need for some more action I’d say, as it’s been quite a while since the last battle (by action I mean berserk Orlando, and by battle I mean tank battle). I wonder how Orlando’s history will be integrated into the story, since I’m pretty sure that will play a large role in the unravelling of the story. Needless to say, if this show keeps up with episodes like these and slowly builds up material to use as launching points for the main plot, I’ll be happy and watching it won’t be such a chore (yes, it is a chore right now).

Plot Outline:
- Walking on a bridge, Oreld notices a depressed woman staring at the river
- When he goes on one of his routine visits to a brothel, he sees the same woman their
- He realises she’s a prostitute working there, even though he has never noticed her before
- Hearing about how she’s waiting for her boyfriend to return after three years of waiting, he decides to make her smile
- He takes her out on a date and shows her around the city
- Machs and that other girl begin to think Oreld is actually in love and follow him around
- Oreld gets into a fight with one of the woman’s regulars and gets kicked out of the brothel
- He then learns that a letter has already been sent to the woman informing her that her boyfriend is dead
- However, the woman hadn’t believed it and continues to wait
- Later, Oreld meets the woman on the same bridge as when he first took notice of her
- He tells her about the battle that her boyfriend was in and how he had fought to allow her to live
- After a while of this, she finally breaks down, but at the same time accepts her boyfriend’s death and moves on with her life
