Pumpkin Scissors: Episode 7

Rating: 7.5/10
Impressions:
Ok yes, this episode is much better than the last, though it’s still just a stand-alone. The only link is the occasional mention of Orlando’s will-o-the-wisp, as well as the connection between the semi-automatic rifles and the reloading tank back in episode…one, was it? However, I am still waiting for a time when the actual happenings in the episode span across several episodes, instead of just concluding after twenty minutes, then proceeding on to something new and relatively unrelated the next episode. It seems that some bloggers have dropped or postponed reviewing this series, so I’ll take that as a sign that its initial average popularity has taken a plummet. However, despite my ranting about Pumpkin Scissors not having a progressive plot, I think the episodes are building up in importance, providing viewers with little random bits of information, before tying everything up and presenting one final arc, spanning over three or so episodes. Actually, it would be better if the entire second half of the series is dedicated to this ‘main’ storyline so that when you describe what happens in the show, you can at least outline some sort of plot instead of “they go around doing army-related stuff”.
I guess it’s kinda like Bleach, where the fights with random follows eventually led to the grand quest to soul society, but at least even then, I felt the series had a strong beginning. The problem with Pumpkin Scissors is that it’s fluctuating quite a bit on interest levels. The first episode was captivating enough to hook people into following it, but its steam immediately began to run out and its above-average started slowly degraded into the joke that was episode 6. Thankfully, it has recovered somewhat, with another real mission. The introduction of Alice’s fiancée is also of great significance, I think. He is clearly evil, since it’s impossible that Alice would end up with him. It’s like introducing a random girl in episode 10 of Shana and having her end up with Yuuji, leaving Yoshida and Shana to pull each other’s hair out. A good, recent example would be Zero no Tsukaima, where Louise’s fiancée, Ward, would obviously take her hand in marriage, since then the whole build up in relationship between her and Saito would have been for nothing. Oh yeah, Ward was evil too, so that supports my point further. I just wonder how long it will be before Alice’s fiancée will return to the screen with evil mode switched on. They’ll probably leave him for another few episodes before putting him back into the story, and hopefully the plot will smoothen out when that happens.
Anyways, I can’t be stuffed writing out a plot outline since I only ever feel compelled to do one for shows I really like.

lol, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th caps of the preview all have the exact same subtitles.
that kick by Alice’s sister reminds me of Naru-kick from Love Hina… as for 3viln3ss emanating from fiancee, at least he showed up surprsingly well, with a twist (poor fellow that invited Alice to ball… got his carriage taken by Alice, and then Alice taken by her fiancee…)
Zeroblade, yeah multiple scenes appeared during that one line of speech, which is what usually happens in anime previews.
Ewok, the nicer the guy is at the start, the nastier he becomes later on hehe…
