桜蘭高校ホスト部 Vintage: Spring 2006 Ouran High School Host Club, which started off as a manga by Hatori Bisuko in 2003 and later adapted as an anime, which is one of the best shows of the spring season in my opinion. I’ve enjoyed it immensely, all the way to the end (well, it hasn’t ended just yet), and I’m sure many others agree with me on how great the show is. The show is very light-hearted, interesting, hilarious, and the most important, very refreshing. The animation and quality are just superb. The detail of the background alone is incredible, with everything in screen done extremely well. The character design is awesome and very unique – simply unforgettable. The voice-acting is one of the best I’ve heard – each voice is perfectly suited for the character and excellent at delivering punch lines. Haruhi’s voice is fantastic as well. It’s very well done how she sounds cute as a girl and still believable as a guy (this makes me think about Kasimasi – the WORST voice acting…). |
The story revolves around a high school girl called Fujioka Haruhi, and of course, the Ouran High School Host Club. Haruhi had recently enrolled at Ouran High with a full scholarship, as the school is very expensive and almost exclusive for rich kids. Being the studious type, she searches for a room to study one day, and arrives at a music room which she thinks is empty. Upon opening the door, she sees the Host Club for the first time. The members are quite disappointed that their guest is a guy (did I mention Haruhi is wearing men’s clothes and doesn’t mind being mistaken for a guy?) As she has entered the Host Club (a club where the male ‘hosts’ please, entertain and flirt with the girls), Haruhi is thought to be gay. Tamaki, the president of the club, asks her about the type she likes and is even willing to come onto her, who he thinks is a guy. Shocked about this, she jerks backward but accidentally knocks over a very expensive vase. In order to pay for it, she is appointed as the Host Club ‘dog’. She must do odd jobs for the club. After a while, Tamaki starts to consider making Haruhi a host instead. However, Kaoru and Hikaru (the twins) emphasize the fact that she doesn’t even pass the basic visual requirements. To prove this, they take off Haruhi’s glasses, but she turns out to be much better looking than they thought. Tamaki is instantly inspired to make her a host. After a successful start, she gets into a little incident and ends up dirtying her uniform. As she is changing into a clean one, Tamaki walks in with some towels and discovers she’s a girl.
This series is generally about Haruhi, the club members and their lives. The plot is not progressive, though the bonds between Haruhi and each member do increase. She started off thinking that the club members as weird, arrogant and annoying, but gets to know them better and eventually starts to like them. The show is not just mindless comedy or senseless lust, but actually quite deep. Oh, and if you’re a guy, don’t think this show will some kind of lame, reverse-harem and exclusively for the female audience just because of its shoujo genre. It is nothing like that, but the only way to make sure of that is to watch it yourself.

Haruhi is an honest, independent and sensible girl, who stands up to what she believes is right, and is the heroine of the story. She is somewhat less conscious of her gender than other people and so doesn’t mind being seen as a guy by people outside the Host Club. She is considered a fascination by Tamaki, Hikaru and Kaoru due to her commoner life. Her naturalness is what draws customers to designate her as their host.

Tamaki is the founder of the Host Club and its King (as said by others). He is very dramatic and overreacts to everything. He is though, very conscious of everyone’s problems and tries his best to help. However, his over-reactive nature sometimes negates this aspect, such as being too worried about Haruhi’s financial status. He has fallen for Haruhi and constantly tries to charm her. However, his usual tactics that he uses on his customers seem to have no effect on her. He then proclaims himself as Haruhi’s father and tries to look out for her, though this is usually quite troublesome for her. His charm and charisma is what gains him his customers.
Haninozuka Mitsukuni (Honey/Hani)

Nicknamed ‘Honey’, Mitsukuni looks young and cute, and loves eating sweets. He may seem like an elementary schooler, but is in fact the oldest in the Host Club, along with his best friend Mori. He is the junior champion of karate and his family is recognised as prestigious martial artists. He uses his shotacon look to attract customers.
Morinozuka Takashi (Mori)

- 17-18yrs
- 192cm
Takashi is somewhat semi-emotionless, silent, strong and is the junior kendo champion. He is always looking out for and protecting Mitsukuni, who is his cousin. Although he is labelled as the silent type, some also consider him the wild type. Both of these aspects are what get him his customers.
Ootori Kyouya
- Host Club Vice-President

- 16-17 yrs
- 181cm
Although Kyouya is meant to be the vice-president of the club, he really is the one who organises everything. He is very intelligent, knowledgeable and somewhat scheming. He is able to manipulate events around him to suit his own needs. I’m not sure how much hosting he does, but he is considered the cool type, which is what attracts the girls.
Hitachiin brothers: Kaoru and Hikaru
- Yr 10
- 15-16 yrs
- 178cm
The identical twins, Kaoru and Hikaru. Athough it is impossible to tell them apart by their faces, the clothes they wear help to distinguish them. Kaoru also has a gentler voice than Hikaru. The two had lived most of their lives with only each other, but this has changed once they joined the Host Club, and especially when they meet Haruhi. Hikaru is the more aggressive type, but always looks out for his younger brother. He also seems to like Haruhi, though Kaoru’s feelings are not clear. The two use their brotherly-love to attract customers.
Houshakuji Renge

- 15-16 yrs
The girl who adores playing dating sims, had dreamt of Kyouya as the rightful prince of the Host Club, and even taken over it as manager (self-proclaimed, that is) – Renge! She is very loud and self-spoken and seems to always appear by using a motorized, spinning platform (even when they are not in the building). Of course, as a girl (Haruhi exception), she does not do any hosting. Instead, she oversees the club instead.

the first kore means ‘this’, oretachi means ‘our’, and ouran matsuri is ‘ouran festival’ or similar. So basically, it means ‘this is our ouran festival’

Don’t know anything about a second season, but it is currently being dubbed in English.
I watch this show all of the time on animefever. Even though it’s in Japanese I love it! It’s supposed to come out in America in the fall of this year. (Supposedly) It’s a great manga and a great show, even though they’re a little different. I don’t know anything about a second season either. Maybe in the future. I hope so. It might turn out like the Fruits Basekt anime and only have one season though.
Anyway, it’s a great manga and anime and I hope to see more of it!

Ok people, who is your favorite character? Mine is Tamaki. He’s the cutest, the funniest, and the best. I think that Tamaki and Haruhi should definitely get together. They obviously like each other but are just too dense to know it. I do feel bad for the twins though. I love all of the characters but Tamaki is just my favorite. Tamaki and Huruhi should be together and I believe that is the only way.
