Nominees in for ~Most unexpectedly good show~ Vote Now!!

It’s time for the next poll - please VOTE NOW! Yes I know I kept the last poll up way to long but I didn’t find the time to change it. Now, next poll is the Most unexpectedly good show. From the nominations, shows that do not end in 2006 were not accepted, with the exception of Saiunkoku Monogatari as the majority of it is in 2006. Anyway, this award spiked a large variation in show nominees, totaling 14 shows. I nominate SHnY, though it’s already been nominated several times anyway. (–Original post–)

So, the nominees are as follows, with the number of times they were nominated:

Asatte no Houkou - 3
Black Blood Brothers - 1
Kemonozume - 2
Mushishi - 1
Muteki Kanban Musume - 1
Nana - 1
NHK ni Youkoso - 1
Ouran High School Host Club - 2
Saiunkoku Monogatari - 1
Simoun - 1
Sumomomo Momomo - 4
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu - 6
Zegapain - 4
Zero no Tsukaima - 4

Suzumiya Haruhi may have been a surprise to us, but the book series won rewards and was already doing well in the book stands, so it may not have been a surprise to many in Japan and Korea, where the translated novel was already available before the anime series started. Asatte no Houkou, however, didn’t have that large following of the manga series, to the degree that it is still very hard for someone outside to see the manga. Based on where it started, and where it ended, I think Asatte no Houkou was the biggest surprise.

Hmmm…I’d have to vote Otoboku (knowing it’s not in the list since I must have missed the post to offer nominations) since I had zero expectations going into it, knowing nothing about the game and only knowing that the character designs looked like D.C.S.S.’s. I can’t imagine Otoboku making the best series of the year on anyone’s list, but for most *unexpectedly* good show it’d get my vote–it’s nothing earth-shatteringly different, but it’s just fun to watch and has a great cast of characters. Compared to the rest of the fall harem/bishoujo series Otoboku tops my list anyway.

Haruhi was my favorite series of ‘06, but since I was looking forward to it from the moment I heard Kyoani was doing it, I can’t say it was unexpected.

    I vote for NANA
It really was a toss up between Black Blood Brothers and Nana, but since BBB was too damn short and Nana is still going strong after I’ve seen 32 eps. I vote for Nana
Plus the name really put me off at first, but I’m glad I picked it up cause now I can’t stop watching the drama unfold!!!
    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Say, am I the only one who’s starting to notice a pattern?

    Anyway, I voted for Simoun.

Asatte no Houkou - because i didn’t expect a show about a young girl and an older girl swapping bodies to be so touching and cute :)

It’s a difficult choice between Ouran Host Club and Kemonozume, but Ouran wins by a small margin. A weird as I found Kemonozume at first sight, I grew to like it after seeing the trailer and the interview with the director. On the other hand, I hadn’t expected much from Ouran (”Just another bishounen anime,” I thought), I fell in love with it minutes into the first episode.

The most unexpected = Muteki Kanban Musume. Average animation and soundtrack but hilarious.

Since SaiMono is fair game now, I voted for it.
Funny though that the anime I originally nominated is now in the top-5 (Muteki Kanban Musume). :p

I voted for Simoun too… damn, it’s only in third place so far… I didn’t expect much, but the story was so intriguing and I looked forward to each episode with delight on what developments they’d have.

Definitely Ouran High school host club. when I read/watched it at first I put it down because it seemed really creepy with the gay factor that appears in the first episode/chapter.. but it turned out to be really good!

Too bad I missed the poll.

In my opinion, Haruhi and Zero no Tsukaima are not really “unexpected.” Because of its character designer being quite popular and its big butget animation quality, those two series looked promising since the beginning. Zero rocks!

My vote for most unexpected good show goes to Zegapain. It started as “yet another generic mecha show,” but for those who gave it a try and watched over 5 episodes were most likely surprised about how good the plot, story and characters were, just like me. Very unexpected, and thus extremely pleasant surprise!

PS Thank goodness Soukou no Strain is not on the list, or it would have been impossible for me to choose between it and Zegapain. lol
