New Poll: Anime or manga?

Wow, the last poll exceeded 200 votes pretty quickly, a lot faster than I expected. However, it is a pretty easy poll, and the clear winners are Death Note, Kanon and Code Geass. Personally my top 5 of last season would be: Negima!?, Code Geass, Kanon, Asatte no Houkou and Soukou no Strain (Death Note would be 6th, since I’ve read the manga already, and its entertainment value drops by like 80%). Poll results here.

Anyway, this poll now is quite a common occurrence. Basically, do you like manga better or anime better? I decided to make this poll from a discussion with a friend today. It went something like this:

me – do you read the naruto manga?
him – no it sucks
me – why?
him – because like all manga sucks. anime is so much better
me – why?
him – because anime is like….animation
me – have you read the naruto manga before?
him – no
me – have you read any manga before?
him – no
me – so how can you say anime is better?
him – shut up

Uh huh, that’s seems about right…you get the idea. It’s like talking to a Narutard about anime when he’s only ever seen Pokemon, Naruto and hentai….

    Erm… where’s the option for-

“I enjoy both anime and manga, and I enjoy both equally.”

    Abstaining from this poll.

    Cheers.

I really think it depends on the series really. It is a fair toss up really, some do better in anime and some do better in manga. Also though that is person opinions so what some belive to be better in anime others could belive the same in the manga. But, yea where is the option Skane suggested :P

yeah, i left out that option because i specifically wanted a manga vs anime, and i know for a fact u cant like both 50% exactly.

for me, most of the time i prefer manga than anime. I used to be a purist too but now not so much. I like manga very much because it’s very complex but I like animation too because it makes the complexities becomes simpler. To be honest, a fighting sequence in the manga doesn’t work very much for me but when it’s animated, i go ‘whoa’.. ^^

I enjoy them both, manga is usually better, but anime is more fun to watch.

I like both, but I prefer anime as I can just sit in front of the computer lazily. Plus it usually takes me a long time to read through manga.

“I enjoy both anime and manga, but manga is usually better”.
That was the easiest poll I had ever to do *haha* (Usually it takes me awhile to decide because in most of the times, I’m stuck between at least 2 options.)

I’m a little confused as to whether this is talking about series’ that have both manga and anime versions, and which is the better of the two, or in general, as in if you perfer watching compared reading. I went with that latter, so…xD

It depends on the series. But as far as which habit do I prefer in general, it would be anime. I used to be much more of a manga person, pretty much reading two volumes a day, one on the train ride to work and another on the train ride home. Ever since I moved and got a car, my manga reading has gone way, way, down.

The odd thing is that for every anime I can think of where I preferred one over the other (say, I preferred the CCS anime to the manga), I can think of another example which has the opposite (I prefer the Angelic Layer manga to the anime).

So yes, I can say that I like the both equally well.

It’s hard for me to say really…but I suppose the second option is the most correct one for me (since it goes without saying that most of the time manga will have superior art quality every week).

people are lazy and don’t know how to read anymore . that’s why most of them consider Manga to be trash and therefore..to suck .
i find this really sad .
now here is how i see things .
    - when a Manga gets an anime adaptation , most of the time the anime will fails because they will insert fillers ( Naruto , Bleach and many others ), or when they reach a certain point where they have passed the manga , they will invent a end and thus butcher the story( FMA , Shaman King , ) or they just end with the weirdest ending “the read the manga to know the end ” ( love hina , Inuyasha , Get Backers , and many more ). Also in the case of a comedy manga , characters will tend to make facials expressions which can’t be reproduced in the anime because those expression only work in “still” form .
    - Now there is the Anime that gets a manga adaptation . it’s usually rare , and most of the time those are Anime adapted from Games . in the case of an anime adapted in a manga , the manga will totality fail , because it won’t be as detailed as the anime and they will cut part to shorten the manga so that it fits 3 volumes max .
    - now..there is Mecha . if you find a manga with a mecha on the cover , leave it . Mecha in manga is the worst thing EVER ! especially if the Mecha as an original anime then it’s Chaos . not only they will change the story , but they will butcher the fights .

well this was long , but my point is , Anime has things Manga don’t have , and Manga have things . if you are a true fan , don’t just spit on one of those two if you don’t even know what the other is like . As for me , manga has one major point that makes it win by far : i can read a manga in the bus/metro and when I’m done , it goes in my pocket . as for the Anime , well..it’s gonna be hard to watch anime in bus/metro . Of course you can bring your laptop or Midi-DVD , but..i would not do that on bus/metro , unless you feel like being jacked and killed . ^^’

I enjoy anime, manga, and novels. There are exceptions, but I find the novels to be the best of the three. It doesn’t hurt that novels have more variety and quantity as well. I need to mention novels, for so many manga and anime is based on novels.

I would have to say anime purely because I watch more anime that I read manga.. and most manga I read has some anime associated with it. (I think Blade of the Immortal is that only one that I read that doesn’t.)

To me it seems like manga does a better job of telling a story since there are less creative and time restraints. But anime does a better job of setting a mood (or at least it has the potential to). For instance, I love both the Monster anime and manga, but the anime draws me in more because the music and pacing add so much to the overall tone.

yes , i read the Neon Genesis Evangelion manga , actually the tome 10 is coming out this month . I resisted the temptation to read the scan so far .
actually i read a lot of Mecha manga even tough i said that Mecha manga are to avoid , but that’s because i loved the anime that much .
    why do you ask ?

well, NGE the manga is one of the few mangas which i think are better than the anime, when in fact the anime came first.

There is no option for “I read manga because it is vastly superior, but I watch anime for kicks” so I chose option 2 XD

Hmmm…some manga is better and some anime is better. So, it’s quite hard to pick one. However, D.gray-man and Airgear were last year biggest disappointment. It is my all time favorites manga but when it converted to anime… boooo!!! D.gray-man… I think everyone knows, the anime didn’t follow the manga and Airgear quality is below average.

If you read the manga and watch the anime, then you will see the difference and might complain about it… like me. :)

Manga is almost always better when it comes to anime series being based off the manga. Rurouni Kenshin, Get Backers, One Piece, D.Gray-man, AirGear, Flame of Recca, etc. are those titles in which the manga is way better. However there are a few titles like Bleach or Naruto where I prefer the anime. It’s just that more people watch anime that’s it. Like you said in your posts, most n00bs who’ve just watched Bleach or Naruto or Pokemon or DBZ will blatantly say that anime is better than manga and other obnoxious comments like “Manga is a crappy black and white comic. I wanna see the thing ANIMATED….” or “Anime pwns manga. It just does.”

Like Whispered.Hope said, I figure you were talking about when both a manga and anime exist for the same title. If that’s the case, then the manga is usually better because the pacing is much better and usually the art is better as well. An anime can suffer from fillers that don’t really advance the plot or suffer from inconsistent animation or art quality. However, an anime has the added dimension of color, movement, music, and voices, or even pacing if they cut out unnecessary parts.

ok, to make this clearer, i am talking about anime in general compared to manga in general. think of it this way:

compile everything u know about manga and anime from what u have seen and read. Now, if u had to choose, would u give up watching anime forever to read manga, or the other way round? remember, this is based on your experience with all anime and all manga u have encountered, not just for titles with both mediums.

    O_o
I hope that never happens. In that case, I’d go with manga since I’ve had many more pleasant experiences with manga than with anime.

If that’s the case, then I’d stick with anime. My anime DVD titles outnumber my manga titles 10 to 1.

Manga for the win. Why? Well, I spent over $2000 HKD on manga (around $330 AUD), whereas I don’t spend a cent on anime. I can go on and on about how manga is better but I don’t want to run my mouth in your comment box.

KYAAH~! What happened to the option for both are equally good, or how bout depends per series in question?

Making a poll is so fun when there’s nothing else to do.

I voted for the underdog, “I don’t read manga or watch anime”, btw.

i suspect that the option for ‘both are roughly equal’ would win the poll if i had that, which is why i left it out

To each his own… Manga for more elaborated storyline and anime for the animation.

Unless it’s an OVA, most anime are created from the mangas with deviation.

  31. kurotsuki February 12th, 2007 6:35 pm Number of comments posted: (27)

well..if i had to give up one , it would be anime. actually , that’s almost what i am doing now , and only reading quick summary’s on blog . I kinda lost my interest in anime . the Animation nowadays is on decline , and i haven’t seen one original anime is a while , always manga or game adaptation .
Also Danny , about the Eva Manga being better then the Anime . hum , actually i don’t know ,I’m pretty much 50-50 on this one . I have to admit that Shinji almost punching Gendou in the manga was priceless .

For titles like Death Note of a psychological genre with dynamic plot twists, the entire appeal of the anime is lost once you read the manga.

I’m mostly a manga fan… but I still think the Naruto manga sucks big time next to the anime. The amateurish, awkward art makes my eyes bleed and the narration fails to capture me – so I stick to the anime (the awesome animation of the fights that drag so much in the manga is a big factor). I stopped reading it some months ago.

Also, mangas adapted from anime usually fail – examples being Escaflowne or Gundam Seed. There are also rare pieces where the anime is better than its original manga – usually, action mangas with crappy art that get a special ‘glow’ in anime (FMA, to a lesser extent Prince of Tennis, for example). [For FMA, I honestly like the anime storyline better too, not just the art]

This is like asking “what do you like more? a cold soda or a hot cofee?”
if you are on the beach at 11:30 AM like hell you’ll want a cold soda, but if you are in winter at 7:00 AM then unless you are iceman you would like the hot cofee

My point is that it totally depends on the series, an easy fast example: Naruto
When I first started reading the manga I didn’t liked too much, but for some reason the anime grabed me and I stacked with it, therefore I liked anime more than the manga, but then fillers started so I picked up the manga again, and I liked more the manga than the anime (I don’t know wich will I preffer after the end of the fillers)

there are some more radical examples like gantz (manga is hellalot better than anime) or ouran high school host club (I loved the anime but I just can’t stand the manga) and there are many other examples, but this comment is long enough already

  35. [...] So immediately from the last poll, you can tell that most people who watch anime also read manga. But which do they prefer? It seems that manga is the slightly more favourable one. Personally, I like manga more… [...]

manga is generally superior to anime in most series. You can elaborate so much more into character development in manga, usually because you can add many more facial expressions to each character. The only thing that is better about anime is MUSIC.
