Kanon: Episode 5

Impressions:

Episode 5 was fantastic! It was mainly due to the humour, as the progression of the story stayed at a similar pace as always. What’s more is that the humour was created from real jokes, not exaggerations or distorted faces that anime usually uses. There was one exception, when Makoto started chucking stuff at Yuuichi for walking in on her bath. That though, was a complete parody of all the times that scene has happened in anime history, when he said ‘where did you get all this stuff from?’ Hilarious…=) Yuuichi’s pranks played on Makoto were priceless too. *Sigh* Yuuichi is so evil! I was thinking how funny and awesome it’d be if KyoAni threw in a Haruhi or Kyon cameo just for the sake the dreamers out there, including me. It would be even better if they created a joke episode where the Kanon characters and Haruhi characters meet and interact with each other, just for the hell of it. Well, that probably won’t happen but the cameo appearance has a high chance of happening. KyoAni did it with Air as well, showing the Kanon characters briefly as Misuzu’s classmates (I wonder when KyoAni actually decided to do a remake of Kanon).

Although I love the humour and wish for more, someone on Memento said that the fun would soon be replaced by sorrow and bleakness. That I completely believe and always knew it would happen. There’s a reason why Kanon is called ’sad girls in snow’. The atmosphere it gives is either gonna be romance or drama, and both are radiating pretty strongly at the moment. It seems the drama aspect will be stronger, with sadder occurrences, probably like Air. That reminds me, practically every important character in Air died, except for the aunty. I remember that show as one of the saddest shows I’ve seen, and have only recently learned that it was made by KyoAni. No wonder it was so good. Anyway, all that’s left now is to prepare myself for some serious plot movement and emotional changes. Already at the end of the episode, something serious seems to have been revealed, with Mai telling Yuuichi to treat Makoto nicely. So far I have to agree with the people that say the storyline is great, as even though it’s really slow and not much has happened, I’m loving every moment of it! It looks like the main characters have already been introduced, so now each girl’s story can slowly unravel, intertwine and end spectacularly!

I especially love Yuuichi’s character, who appears to be far superior to Kyon’s at the moment. Yuuichi is such a pimp, not even covering himself up when he walked in on Makoto having a bath. For anyone who thinks that moment was cliché, you are dead wrong. It seemed to me that Makoto was pretty nicely covered up, so it was actually her who saw Yuuichi naked and not the other way round. What’s more, there was no furious blushing, blood noses or whatever, and Yuuichi, instead of slamming the door and bolting, he stayed and tried to get in the bath with Makoto! How incredible is that?! How old is Makoto anyway? Speaking of her, like how a lot of people are thinking now, I also believe that Makoto is quite closely related to the fox legend that Nayuki mentioned in the first episode. Her hair, fangs, amnesia and clueless-ness to everything are sure pointers to her being a reincarnation of a fox, spirit of a fox or something similar. Ayu is probably similar in the way that she is a spirit or something, now that it’s been shown Mai really is what she claimed to be: a demon hunter. I thought that was a bit blatant for a mystery show but it seems like KyoAni is putting in some extra hints not in the game.

Anyway, apart from Makoto (I’m talking about Yuuichi being a pimp at the moment), Yuuichi also flirts with Sayuri. After discovering how good a cook Sayuri is~ Yuuichi: You pass! Sayuri: pass what? Yuuichi: Being my bride! xD How awesome is that character of his! There was also his moment with Shiori~ Yuuichi: You can call me ‘onii-chan’! Shiori: Sure, onii-chan! And of course, the extra liking that Yuuichi has taken upon Mai. Ayu didn’t get much time this episode but that was necessary to build up the relationships with Yuuichi and the other girls. Yuuichi’s harem definitely pwns all the other’s this season, and the thing is, it’s Yuuichi who’s doing all the work! Kyon could never pull such a thing off…And another thing, although it’s not really relevant to what I was talking about here, after hearing Mai tell Yuuichi to be nice to Makoto, I can’t help but think she’s gonna get sick and die. I also checked out the ANN entry for the original Kanon and noticed another character: Mishio, who was voiced by Maaya Sakamoto (Fujioka Haruhi!). Anyway, I can’t wait for the next episode – it’s starting to get exciting now!

Plot Outline:

- A flashback about how Yuuichi left Ayu all alone seven years ago…
- Following on from last episode, Yuuichi is at school with Mai at night
- Mai suddenly leaps at Yuuichi and gets rid of some sort of spirit behind him
- After Yuuichi asks her a few times, Mai tells him that she’s a demon hunter
- When Yuuichi returns, he goes to take a bath but walks in on Makoto while she’s already having one
- He offers to join her but she screams and bolts out of the bathroom
- Yuuichi takes his bath then goes to bed
- Before he falls asleep, Makoto tries to do something to him again but he catches her
- Yuuichi takes Makoto back to her bed and tucks her in (how cute)

- The next day, Ayu comes for breakfast and it takes Yuuichi a long time to realise that she’s there
- At school, Yuuichi tries to talk to Mai, but Sayuri comes and the three have lunch together
- Yuuichi formulates a plan to get Mai to speak by taking all the bentos for himself and serving them to her, according to what she orders (and this plan is a success!)
- Outside, he comes across Shiori again and share a quick conversation
- On his way back, he comes across Makoto, who is on an errand to buy some tofu
- As a result of the argument regarding whether Makoto was a kid or not, Yuuichi tells her to buy him some porn magazines (as she doesn’t know what they are)
- Of course, she gets back flustered and angry that Yuuichi tricked her
- Makoto then goes to buy some pork buns and manga when she sees Yuuichi reading them

- It turns out that she had used all the tofu money to what she wanted
- Akiko decides to give her an allowance from then on
- That night, Yuuichi goes to school again to see Mai, who is standing at her usual spot
- When he is talking to her, something sneaks up behind him and tries to scare him
- However, Mai reveals it to be none other than Makoto, trying to exact revenge on him again
- Mai then tells Yuuichi to be nice to her
- Yuuichi thinks about this request as he takes Makoto home

Mishio is already in the OP. ^^; It should be pretty easy to pick her out, since she’s the only character left to make her début.

    Cheers.

HUH?! Ok, I’m watching the OP again. I usually skip the OP and ED after seeing it once so I had no idea…

I felt like they were overdoing it with the yuiichi comedy. Some of it could have been edited out and I wouldn’t have even noticed. After the first few punchlines he was already a sarcastic type character, they didn’t really need to keep pushing that. Other than that I thought it was funny, at least HE was funny. And Makoto is my favorite girl but then again…i still don’t really find this series special other than the little spurts of comedy.

I understand. There are quite a few really popular shows that I just don’t seem to like, and I always feel that maybe there was something I had missed. It’s similar with NGE, though it’s the other way around as I hear a lot of people didn’t like it because they just didn’t get what the hell was going on.

Maybe Yuuichi’s sarcasm was funny the first time around; after about the 11th time I started to get seriously annoyed.

There is a line between being mildly sarcastic and being an insensitive, know-it-all bully. He crossed that line at about the 2:00 mark and things only went downhill from there.

Am I supposed to find Yuuichi’s antics funny?

Well, there are those who find him a jerk and those who worship him as Kyonichi for his personality…

Sarcastic as Yuuichi may be, but he is not an insensitive bully. If he was, he would not lend a hand to the girls whenever they were in trouble, like going out of his way to help Nayuki get back her notebook, helping Ayu find her lost item, etc…

Think of Yuuichi as somewhat of a mixture of tease and tender.

    Cheers.

Also Yuuichi with the carrying and tucking in of Makoto, knowing she was getting sick. That’s sweet.

I’m not particular about his sarcasm, but the bathroom scene had a different feel to it than typical.

well, at least he’s not typical male anime char who would nosebleed and blush and flee the bath encounter scene…
