Kanon: Episode 22

Rating: 9.7/10
Impressions:
Aww, seeing as how Nayuki is my favourite character now, this episode makes me feel especially sorry for her. Just watching her suffer and blame herself is so sad. After such a heartbreaking rejection seven years ago from Yuuichi, she has to live with a single parent, and just when Yuuichi returns, Akiko now faces the threat of leaving and never returning. If only this episode focuses more on Nayuki, but I guess there’s a schedule to be kept, with only two more episodes left (although I don’t know what that schedule is, and it seems like Kanon is meant to end next episode, but then what will episode 24 be?)

But I shall continue with this complaint anyway. This is meant to be a significant Nayuki development episode, where she is supposed to recover. However, this is cut out for Yuuichi’s sudden remembrance of what happened to Ayu. This in itself is very confusing, as now everything I ‘thought’ earlier is being doubted. Initially, I was thinking AND hoping that Ayu is dead, and that the material Ayu now is a spirit. Then I was lead to believe that Ayu is in a coma, but now with this episode, it seems she actually dies in front of Yuuichi. Unless Yuuichi completely forgot about taking Ayu to a hospital or something.

Makoto’s return was quite a surprise as well. I have no idea what she or the white light is meant to symbolise, and perhaps it’s something supernatural. Also, as of now I really don’t know how Yuuichi is supposed to end up with Ayu if she is dead. Maybe Yuuichi will die himself to be together with Ayu. He better not bring Ayu back from the dead or something, as I hate it when shows take defying the laws of the universe to such an extent that living and being dead are meaningless. Time travel and being able to move around after getting stabbed and slashed multiple times by a sword are similar ‘law-breaking’ notions I dislike.

I’m also pretty confused about the last few scenes, where Yuuichi is shown giving Ayu that hair band. Isn’t that bad the same one as when Yuuichi decides to give her, but is unable to as Ayu falls and perhaps dies? Maybe this was the spirit Ayu being handed the hair band. Ayu’s fall to her demise is pretty predictable, but just about everything else is a surprise for those who haven’t seen the previous anime. And what exactly is Yuuichi trying to achieve by looking for Ayu in the snow at the end…but then again, I wouldn’t have a clue as to what to do if I was in his shoes.

It doesn’t look like Yuuichi will end up with Nayuki as he leaves her to Kitagawa, but this obviously doesn’t give much of a conclusion. Nayuki hasn’t forgiven Yuuichi and nothing between the two has been resolved. I would really love some nice bonding between the two when or if they make up, regardless of who Yuuichi ends up with. Or if this will be anything like Air, he might not end up with anyone. I have to admit though, Air was pretty confusing. With only two episodes to go, let’s hope Kyoto Animation have what it takes to wrap this series up beautifully like they have done for the rest of the show!

Just to clear up confusion, the last scene of U1 presenting the gift to Ayu is a reality-denial, self protection memory that U1 made up. It nvr took place in reality. If anyone gonna ask why does the present Ayu has it then, well… i cant spoil it for everyone here….
This is like the first episode that I didn’t really enjoy that much, as not a lot actually happens in the episode (Nayuki’s pissed, Yuuichi remembers a bit more of his past, Akiko hasn’t changed much, and an old character reappears for a few seconds at the end).
Anyway, I hope that Makoto or Ayu or whoever is supposed to appear comes and tells Yuuichi that he’s still young (he’s only 17 or something right?) and that he is a pimp and therefore should stop being a farthead and find someone else to love. I mean, he’s ready to die (and he’s 17 or something for god’s sake) for this loli girl? Isn’t that a bit over-dramatized?
Well, regardless, Kanon rox.
Nightingale: ah ok, thanks for clearing that up
Budding: yup, this is anime we’re talking about
kanon has slowly come to being one of my favourite animes and i’m glued to this show every friday. I really wanna know the ending but i dont want it to end!
ah sorry the above comment was me
forgot to put my name in!
One of my favorite shows that I can’t wait to see the next. I’d recommend watching the whole dream scene with the girl narrator at the beginning/near-beginning of some of the episodes again when you finished watching ep. 22 and still don’t get it. It does seem to throw some hints here and there.
And I shouldn’t have to tell you who is the girl talking at the dream scenes at this point.
damn it seems like theres not much he can do for his cusion. Scine he blew her off like that Nayuki probley doesn’t want his comfort because it wouldn’t be “real” or something like that. Still I like Makoto’s spirit’s cameo heh but emo Nayuki was really sad. I think they did a pretty good job with this ep, better then toei, well they didn’t do a bad job either but oh well. I think Makoto’s spirit was there to cheer him on/tell him not to die, because he accepted death and he was able to see the already dead makoto, but when he opended his eyes she dissapeared. Still some Nayuki x Yuuichi bonding/ a good conculstion would be nice. Well I can tell you that theres no necromancy in Kanon, Ayu’s either dead as a doornail or alive, you’ll see next ep I think? Still Yuuichi’s running up the snowstorm was a bit unnessesary but seeing the circumstances I guess there could be some rational to his actions
Ahh, I don’t know why but as I was watching the series I was always under the impression it would be a 26 episode long one. With the next episode seemingly being the last in terms of the main plot line and 24 probably being an OVA type aftermath, I feel robbed of an extra 44 minutes of Kanon T_T
Yuuichi presenting the hairband to Ayu is probably his dream that never came true. This is how Yuuichi wanted to say goodbye to Ayu and leave the town. Who knew it would end up like this. He must have felt guilty afterwards and so he made himself forget everything.
Very sad.
The episode is great.
Yeah all eps of Kanon are great! heh. Well his amesia is finally explained
all the sadness he caused to Nayuki came back to Yuichi to bite him… And poor Jun again has to save sad girl
24th episode is named Kanon.
Likely its the final one, it might be the epilogue with the storyline ending at 23 or not.
Episode 24 is probably a recap one.
I predicted Ayu falling of the tree but I was still shocked with that scene. Human life is so fragile, just like in a case of Akiko-san. I just felt sad for these children.
Beautiful episode anyways, it was angsty, yeah, but this is one of the final episodes, it had to be like that, following canons of anime.
I can’t wait! i want to watch it sooo bad but on http://www.youtube.com it dosen’t allow subbed verisons to be made b/c tokyo productions took it off.
anyone know where to watch Kanon Episode 22 with english subs for free on a site like youtube?? thanks!
