Kanon: Episode 20

Impressions:
Quite a surprising episode, but the disappearance of Ayu basically confirms that she’s a spirit, and strengthens the notion that she is inactive in her real body (meaning, dead or coma, and I know the answer…) And it also allows Nayuki some time now, which she truly needs (Nayuki fan here), though I don’t see how Yuuichi is suddenly going to accept Ayu’s disappearance of forget about it to focus on his other childhood friend. I really have no idea what’s what at the moment regarding the ending, but it looks to me, from reading other blogs, that there might still be a chance of a Nayuki ending…(please don’t burn me if I am 100% wrong).
Of course, Ayu is really cute this episode, with all the blushing and cute poses…(lol no I am NOT a pedo…besides, she’s not as young as she looks). And wow, some fanservice as well with that Ayu bath scene, where she actually looks pretty mature. Really though, Ayu needs to look older. Her current look doesn’t suit the show IMO, and she doesn’t go well with Yuuichi. Speaking of their relationship though, this episode is far too sudden. Yuuichi and Ayu go from ordinary, bickering friends to lovers for life…or so they say. This is the type of unrealistic-ness (goddammit my vocab is so small; I know that’s not a word) that I really am not fond of.
It is pretty hard to believe that a player like Yuuichi would suddenly go all lovey-dovey over someone, with an almost permanent blush now…And as said many times before, the way Yuuichi scrolls through girls is a bit too farfetched for me. I guess it’s somewhat okay though, as Makoto was like a sister to Yuuichi (or maybe pet lol), Mai another sister, only older…But what about Shiori? Did he not have any romantic feelings for her? Did he ever go to Shiori’s place and ask about her? Ok, I’m not really bashing the show or anything, but just trying to illustrate a point…hehe.
I’ve seen some speculation about who the mystery older girl Yuuichi used to like is, though at first I simply thought it was Makoto, the older girl who fox-Makoto gets her name from. But seeing as how no one has seemingly even mentioned this, I will take it as completely wrong…I can’t really make out who the person in the flashback is either, and I didn’t think it was really important at the time anyway. It would be pretty disturbing if it was Akiko, which I highly doubt as the girl in the flashback is a kid, though seeing as how this is a eroge visual novel adaptation…anything could be true…
I would like to go back to Ayu’s disappearance, which I said before is rather surprising, though most likely because it is a bit too sudden. Ayu and Yuuichi are only together for a single episode before Ayu is taken off the screen, and for how long, I have absolutely no idea. If Ayu is actually in a coma, then perhaps Yuuichi will find her in a hospital. However, something like that would take the mystery away, as at first it would seem like Ayu disappeared, got hurt and wound up in a hospital. Seeing as how this series is highly supernatural, a mystical connotation would be nice, though I dunno how KyoAni would do that.

Nayuki’s story will slot in the next few episodes, then we’ll have another episode concluding the other girls’ stories before Ayu returns to conclude the last. It’s the most logical way for KyoAni to structure the series finale - indeed, from my perspective, it’s the only really viable selection that does not involve substantially rewriting Key’s original script. Nayuki’s story requires Yuuichi to be socially isolated, and the period between Ayu’s disappearance and the conclusion of her story is the only one in which _some_ girl other than Nayuki is not present in Yuuichi’s life.
Nayuki ending is impossible, and has been from the start. Her story is sweet and romantic, but it’s also mundane and lacks the kind of emotional punch that the other stories have showcased, and in a series of this nature it would make for an anticlimatic finale. Ayu’s ending is the only one capable of answering those questions because she’s the main Kanon girl, and Kanon in the game is primarily about her until the player wrenches it in other directions. It’ll end with her.
I found this episode to be absolutely hilarious. This bit about the interview and the forehead kissing part was so LOL for me it was amazing.
For someone who hasn’t played the game nor seen the Toei version of Kanon, this episode was pretty confusing near the end. It seems Yuuichi is a pimp who has a tendency to get on with females who like to vanish or become seriously injured or ill for whatever reason.
I kind of feel sorry for Nayuki, as she seems to be the one left out. Hopefully that will change in the next few episodes.
And, despite you saying that you are not a pedo, I am not convinced one bit especially after having read some of your previous reviews

Ayu does look a little bit too young lol, I mean shes shorter then Shiori whos a year younger then her x.x Well besides that I support the Ayu ending!
Well, Ayu might be older in terms of age, but she is definitely the most loli looking character in Kanon (excluding past memory recap scenes). And, from some of the other stuff I have read on this blog, Danny seems to be always going for the more loli type XD
After watching this episode, it felt like there was supposed to be another one in between, the speed at which Kyon’ichi and Ayu fell in love was wayy too fast considering he showed no outward signs of affection for Ayu.
As for the older girl Kyon’ichi had a crush on, I’m pretty sure it was just a random older girl named Makoto. When fox-Makoto was still a fox, Kyon’ichi talked about her a lot. So when fox-Makoto became human, she assumed the form and name of his crush. Or…that’s how I interpret it anyways, I could be wrong =\
Well Ayu’s loliness is probley because shes a spirit or some ghost or something and doesn’t grow the same as humans, I bet she could probley alter her apperance or something, or maybe her real body had stunted growth for some reason. Oh well idk loli rock x.x Ayu’s still older then I am though lol.. Oh yeah and I thought Danny was an Ayu fan (However, I have just realised myself what makes me love Kanon. And it’s become conclusive; it’s Ayu. Yes that’s right, Ayu! Her flashback kicked me back into my old Kanon-loving state when it had just started.)
So we are expected to think that Ayu is some kind of spirit? I was thinking that doll given to her still had one wish left on it right? So with that was she trying to find it before she ran out of time and could hopefully wish herself to stay.
Also like most people I have no clue as to who this older person Yuuichi saw when he was a young boy and instantly fell in love with. When Nayuki mentioned that she had liked someone before was this dirrected towards Yuuichi and how he loved Ayu so Nayuki couldn’t have been with Yuuichi?
Hm well when Nayuki talks to Yuuichi and when she says she was rejected because the boy she liked (Yuuichi) liked another girl I always thought she was refreing to Ayu. Yuuichi is really mean when he rejects Ayu in the Toei version but it’s understandable considering what happens. I want to see Kyoani’s version of the flashback. And I think your probley right on the finding the doll thing though. Ayu’s current copreal form probley isn’t the “real” her if you know what I mean

The older girl is the ‘other’ Sawatari Makoto. We know his crush on Makoto predated his meeting with Ayu because Ayu and Yuuichi only knew each other for a single winter break, and after that break Yuuichi never again returned to the city of snow. Flashbacks clearly demonstrate that it was not winter when Yuuichi had fox-Makoto in his keeping, meaning that his acquisition of the fox predated his meeting with Ayu. Since we know that he had a crush on Sawatari Makoto whilst in possession of the fox-Makoto, this means that his crush on Makoto predated his meeting with Ayu, making Makoto his first love.

Ayu has done the Houdini impersonation, which means Nayuki finallygets some time one-on-one with Yuichi. Though, I believe in Ayu ending. The fateful tree in the opening and Ayu in the ending are pretty much smybolic to me. Feel sorry for Nayuki, though. And still protesting the loli-centrism in the name of MILF fans! Akiko FTW!
