Kanon: Episode 2

Kanon

Impressions:

Another awesome episode – better than the first if you ask me! The quality is still more than excellent, as expected of the gods of art KyoAni! The characters got more of an introduction this episode, which was good. (heh, Yuuichi seems to be getting quite the harem, with all the female characters at school plus the girl at the end of the episode). I don’t find the pace slow at all because I’m enjoying every moment of it. I’m glad there’s a sense of humour in the series as there were quite a few times when I couldn’t help but crack up. I loved the alarm clock Nayuki gave Yuuichi – she probably gave him that one as it was the least noisy. Now we know why she has so many alarm clocks, and they’re still not enough lol. Then there was the scene where Ayu runs into Yuuichi again – they had attempted to jump out of the way but still collided (and Yuuichi’s expression was once again hilarious). The face Yuuichi made when he found out Ayu was the same age as him was also a laugh. Ah…I’m so glad this show is funny in that way; it just makes you feel good watching it (with the outstanding art, fluidness and quality).

Kanon

It was pretty amusing how KyoAni put so many references to Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu in Kanon. This reminds me of SHnY itself as it had plenty of hidden (and some not hidden) references to other shows by KyoAni. In this particular episode of Kanon, the first thing I noticed was Yuuichi’s introduction to his class at school. When he sits down, Kaori tells him that his intro was pretty ordinary, to which he replies that if there was an intro that wasn’t ordinary, he’d like to see it. Now for those who think of Yuuichi as Kyon in another dimension, it is pretty ironic how Kyon was able to witness a rather strange intro from Haruhi in SHnY. Another reference was when Yuuichi got lost and, after he was found by Kaori, narrated the events. While it seems like he was thinking this when it happened, Kaori asks him why he was narrating how she found him (meaning he was speaking aloud), which again points to Kyon and his habit of narrating everything that happens. Finally, after school, Kaori jokes that Yuuichi seems like a spy, which references Koizumi from SHnY, as he was sort of a spy and was a transfer student.

Kanon

Like I said before, it was pretty funny when Yuuichi discovered Ayu is about the same age as him, but I wasn’t surprised when she said it. I already had a feeling she was close to Yuuichi in terms of age as they looked to be the same height and age when they were young (during the flashback in episode 1). I also thought if Yuuichi were to end up with anyone it would be Ayu, and now that it has been confirmed they are around the same age, this wouldn’t be a problem. Even though she does act and think like a little kid, it wouldn’t look weird if she suddenly fell in love with Yuuichi. The promise(s) they made a long time ago are sure to be important too, as well as those wings in the beginning. Wings are always important; they just are! And now I wonder who the person was at the beginning of episode one. The crying boy was Yuuichi, but the person who we don’t know is the girl who was lying down looking up at him. Was that girl dead? And if so, it means it’s impossible for any of the girls introduced so far to be her…or is it? Or maybe she wasn’t dead, or even near death at all. Anything’s possible…

Plot Outline:

- Yuuichi wakes up in the morning to Nayuki’s recorded voice as an alarm clock
- He tries to wake Nayuki up who is refusing to rouse, even though all her alarm clocks are sounding at the same time
- Eventually she gets up and the two eat breakfast, where Nayuki’s mum gives Yuuichi some homemade jam which turns out to be horrible in taste
- The two run to school, tiring Yuuichi out but not Nayuki as she is on the track team
- At school, Yuuichi winds up in the same class as Nayuki, Kaori and Jun
- After school, Yuuichi tells Nayuki not to reveal to anyone that they are living together as rumours could spread, but it is already too late as she spread the word in the morning

Kanon

- As she is running away from Yuuichi playfully, she slips and falls down the stairs, knocking over Mai and Sayuri
- After things are sorted out, Nayuki goes to train with her track team while Yuuichi explores the school
- He gets lost but is rescued by Kaori, who takes him to the front gate
- As they are walking, Kaori tells Nayuki was the happiest she had ever seen her this morning when Yuuichi ended up in the same class as her
- Yuuichi stops by the local store to by some goods but encounters Ayu, who is running at him once again
- They both try to dodge each other but end up jumping the same way and still colliding
- Ayu takes Yuuichi’s hand and flees to a park (it seems Ayu made off with some taiyaki without paying again)
- As they are walking through the park without a destination as they both don’t know where they are, the two recall remember each other from seven years ago

Kanon

- Ayu tries to hug Yuuichi as an act of being reunited, but he gets out of the way and Ayu walks into a tree, which knocks down snow onto a girl walking by, knocking her down
- Yuuichi and Ayu help her pick up the groceries she had spilled and the three start walking together
- The girl, Shiori, says she is a high school freshman, and Ayu then reveals she is one year above her, which means she is in the same year level as Yuuichi (he is pretty shocked to hear this)
- When Yuuichi and Ayu part ways with Shiori, they go and apologise to the taiyaki seller before making a promise to see each other again
- Yuuichi is finally able to go and buy groceries, but when he exits the store, he is confronted by a girl who seems to have a grudge on him
- The girl attempts to bash Yuuichi but her blows are so weak that Yuuichi doesn’t even twitch (and she claims that it is because she is hungry that she can’t fight)
- The girl trips and falls into Yuuichi’s arms, but slides down to the ground and passes out

Oh no! Is that a little inconsistency I see in the characters’ faces?

Seriously, this anime is huge eye candy. So much detail in the animation. I’m like exploding from quality ecstasy over here, but I’m still waiting for the plot to pick up before I decide on its greatness.

Yeah, I busted in my pants when the mum spread jam on the toast. “ZOMG HAWT ANIMATION BUDGET!”

Maybe not that much, but I did mark out a little bit :P

lol, so im not the only one who saw the remark of unconventional introduction and thought of Haruhi – some of my friends dubbed hero of this show Kyuiichi already, due to his attitude and voice… also having played some dating sims in the past I remember walking thru endless hallways of schools…

I’m not sure how many people here know it (I didn’t think it was a secret) but this entire series is, of course, a remake of the original Kanon series (I believe from the early 1990’s). While they mix it up and add their own wonderful qualities to it, the plot still follows the same approx. path that the original did. They are actually MORE obvious about some ’surprises’ coming up than the original one was.

So, if you are wondering “The quality is great, will it be a great anime?” Well, the first one already WAS a great anime- and this one, as a result, will be just as good based on their obvious intention to follow the original plot. The only difference? The original had typical anime quality with ‘cheating’ techniques (still frames for some scenes, etc) while this anime has that rich, incredible clarity to it. That is the difference that knocks it out of the ball-park. Original fans will also notice that many of the “major” scene backgrounds were recreated from the original for this movie- while others were altered slightly to make it slightly more modern and a bit of a bigger city.

If any of you get really obsessed and are desperate to know what happens next- go to animesuke and download the original Kanon anime by bittorrent. As for me, I’m about to pull my old copy out and watch it- then compare the two versions as this one goes along.

This anime is, in my opinion (having watched hundreds of anime movies/series) one of THE BEST ever. Evangelion is a close competetor- but Evangelion’s ending sucks compared to this one (you’ll have to wait and see- I hope they don’t spoil it by being too obvious this time around). When I heard the opening theme in episode one, as well as the opening theme song- I just started crying. In the original that wasn’t the ‘opening song’… but it was a very major, very emotional theme that played at crucial parts of the anime, especially the tail end episodes. So, the fact they turned it into the opening song is just WONDERFUL. For those who haven’t seen the original- you are in for a special treat, and quite a few laughs and tears.

Well, I knew all that…and the original Kanon was in 2002, not 1990’s -.-
I’ve also seen pictures of the original and the aniation looks like crap, though I hear the story was excellent and I don’t doubt that. Now, we have a good story plus good quality done by Kanon = instant win!

And Eva is awesome too – glad you like it.
