Kanon: Episode 17

Rating: 9.4/10

Impressions:

I’m liking Shiori’s arc more than both Mai’s and Makoto’s at the moment (don’t kill me) mainly because Shiori’s problem is more natural. Makoto, being a fox spirit, is too erratic for my liking, as were the demons that terrorise the school during Mai’s arc. Shiori’s arc reminds me a lot of Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, which is about a girl who has not long to live, staying out her last days with a boy in the same hospital. However, this episode doesn’t really make me feel sad for Shiori, which I believe will change later on. The next episode seems to be the last episode, though the arcs so far haven been 4 or 5 episodes, so I’m not sure.

Do I like Shiori? Not really, but I don’t hate her like Impz, who was unhappy last week because Shiori hadn’t died by then. Now go and flame his blog! Nah just kidding. One aspect of Shiori I like is that she is mentally very strong. She is about to die, no, she could die at any moment, yet she is not feeling the least bit concerned. I dunno whether it is because she is used to the feeling, but I know if I were told I had cancer or something and might die today, I would be scared shitless. I would never even be able to think straight. And there’s absolutely no way I’d ever get a peaceful nights rest.

Shiori has to suffer even more though, as her precious sister is completely ignoring her. No, it’s worse. Kaori is treating her like shit, and I dislike her for that. I’m pretty sure that Yuuichi’s goal to bring the two together will work, though I’m hearing things about a boxcutter, and it’s not about Shuffle! At least if she went psycho, it would make things more interesting and less one sided. As to whether Shiori will die or not, I strongly believe she will. I found her words about miracles very true. “I might live if a miracle happens, but it’s called a miracle because it will never happen.” It’s sad, but definitely makes the most sense.

This is another one of Shiori’s strong points, and that is to not lose herself in denial. She takes what she can, and at the moment she is spending as much time with Yuuichi as she can. She also lets go of those she cannot grasp, such as Kaori. She is not selfish, and although she might have an annoying attitude to some, I believe anyone would let her be how she pleases if they knew she’s about to die. That’s what I like about Yuuichi in this arc as well. And that’s exactly why Kaori is being a bitch. I went over why and stuff last time, so I won’t go into it again. Like I said though, Kaori is probably going to change her mind about Shiori at the last minute, when it’s too late…

Plot Outline:

- Yuuichi returns home after hearing about Shiori’s imminent demise from Kaori
- He gives a good think about it as he is accompanied by Ayu, who senses something is wrong
- The next day, he goes to see Shiori at night and talks to her about Kaori
- Shiori also promises him that she will show up at school the next day and surprise him
- As she said, Shiori shows up the next day in school uniform, and explains she is allowed to attend school until Saturday

- Yuuichi has lunch with her, but unfortunately Shiori orders curry when she can’t take hot food at all
- The next day, Shiori prepares large bentos for Yuuichi, who gladly eats it all
- After school he and Shiori head out and explore the shops, mainly the stuffed animal store
- He sees Kaori and tries to persuade her to have some tea with Shiori, but she refuses
- That night, Yuuichi wonders what he can get Shiori for her birthday, and decides to bring her and Kaori together as a present

it’s great scene when Yuiichi despairs about how he could have done something for Makoto or Mai, but can’t do a thing about Shiori’s sickness…

Holy smokes, I’m really sorry dude.

But that wasn’t a spoiler at all, I completely made that scenario up.
It’s totally invented, I’ve watched the Toei version and played the game and none of what I’ve said actually happens.

I guess you really didn’t notice at the end of the comment I put “Next week: Danny at Novastorm and everyone else realizes that Baka-Kun was full of it”

I thought I was clear enough at the end of my post, that I had simply created a gag scenario; but I guess I wasn’t.
You took it as an actual spoiler, and for that I apologize; I thought my post was an obvious joke, but I guess I should have been more clear.

I’m sorry for working you all up.

That’s exactly what I thought while watching! The male leads even share the same name o.o

Lol now I want to know what Baka said x.x I missed the “spoiler” well seeing that I’ve seen the Toei one I’d probley know if it was fake or not. And upon closer examination, Shiori really isn’t that bad shes pretty moe and is alot less annoying then Makoto atleast

Alright Bata-kun, i apologise for reacting that way when you didn’t actually say a spoiler. But the thing is, saying that what you said doesn’t really happen is STILL a spoiler. But still, I take back what I said in the comment. You should realise though that most people who do no appreciate spoilers (at least in that detail like me) would have stopped reading way before the final line.

I have to disagree with ya about Kaori. I know it looks like she is an uncaring wench, but its just an act. Her melt down last week in front of Yuuichi and when she was alone in this week’s episode just show me that she’s trying to protect herself from the loss. Granted, she’s going about this whole thing the wrong way, but I can understand her trying to avoid the pain.

Yeah that’s true, her attitude is probley like “why should I care for Shiori and everything if she’s just going to dissapear” It’s logical in a way but I disagree with what she’s doing because it causes Shiori alot of pain. lol I think in Hanbun the same subject came up and Yuiichi from Hanbun choose to do the opposite thing Kaori from Kanon is doing.

I would have to disagree, Danny, and say I would be very surprised if Shiori did _not_ survive. Why?

which brings me to a question… is Shiori or Kaori the one who needs Yuichi’s protection? Shiori looks like she accepts her fate without regret, while Kaori is desperte to separte herself from tragic reality…

Tim, they are doing the girls endings of the game … with a few adaptations because it … well … the game naturally ended at that point.

And yes, Hinano is doing spoilers because she is comparing this remake with the original version and the game … you think if NGE had a remake we would not going to spoil things when we noticed diferences?

I have not looked at any of the spoilers above (I even missed the fake one), and know nothing about the 2002 version nor the game, so what follows is complete spoiler-free eculation.

I have to say that the way Kaori is treating Shiori is awfully reminiscent of the way Sayuri treated her little brother when he was ill, and the denoument will probably be similar to the way that flashback ended. It seems to be a theme throughout this series: Seize the moment and treat everyone as if you’ll never have a chance to make it up to them, because one day you won’t. I have no doubt Kaori will learn this lesson; the question is whether it will be before or after her sister dies. We have already had two miracles so far this series, but I think to have another one happen in this case will cheapen the storyline.

Speculation, that is. (Hey, I invented a new word! Eculation. Wonder what it means?)

Drakron: Yes, but every girl has two endings. The question, therefore, is which KyoAni are going to choose to end Shiori’s arc…

    SPOILERS

The ending in which she lives, or in which she dies? My money is on the former.
