Kanon: Episode 10

Rating: 9.7/10

Impressions:

It doesn’t really get more emotional than this. Surprisingly though, it’s not as sad as I expected, and that scene at the end with Makoto and Piro sleeping together, which represented the hope that Yuuichi had for a miracle, actually made the mood (for me) far happier. Or should I say, more satisfying? Since Makoto definitely gets a satisfying end, having spent all that time with Yuuichi and receiving such love from him. It kind of makes her apparent absence from now on less ‘empty’. I have to say that Amano is really cute in this episode, more specifically toward the end when she opened herself right up to Yuuichi, her new ‘friend’. The way she says that he’s her friend makes it seem like she’s never had a friend before, which is kinda sad. Amano is surprisingly flirtatious and playful, which made me fall in love with her. Now I’m really sad as she probably won’t get much screen time from now at all. I wish her character could be developed more, though seeing as I don’t know how the game turns out, she might appear to gain some more important roles in the future. Anyway, everyone says the next arc will be Mai, though I’m pretty sure Kanon won’t jump straight from one arc to another.

When Yuuichi announces that he is going to marry Makoto, I immediately began to roam the possible endings, and the one I came up with was this: Yuuichi goes through the proper proceedings for the marriage, goes in for the kiss (and closing his eyes of course), but just before he makes it, Makoto disappears. Then we get a tearful scene with Yuuichi dropping to his knees and screaming Makoto’s name out. Well, I’m very glad it didn’t turn out that way, since the actual ending is far more realistic and touching. After losing the wedding veil, Yuuichi and Makoto sit down to play for a while. I’m not sure how much time passes, though it’s probably something like half an hour. With Yuuichi persisting to play with the bell, you can tell that he’s already broken down inside and is disguising his angst with a false happiness, though his desperation clearly shows. The fact that he didn’t scream out is also pretty close to a situation in real life like that, though I have never witnessed one so I wouldn’t know. It’s like sitting beside a person in a hospital bed, knowing he/she’s going to die. I wonder if KyoAni made a cooling down aftermath episode of Makoto’s arc for Yuuichi, and at the same time a transition period between arcs.

Akiko and Nayuki both realise that Makoto would no longer be with them after her fever, though they did a very good job of hiding their sorrow. Nayuki made me proud for staying strong when she plays with Makoto in the snow outside school. Akiko did her best too, though broke down when Makoto and Yuuichi left the house. Even Amano gave in to her fears and confronted Makoto. I’m still not sure as to what happened to her in the past, as it ‘clearly’ been explained yet. Anyway, I really want to see Ayu some more, and Nayuki too, though the real characters that require some more attention are actually the secondary characters. This means Amano, Kaori and Sayuri. Amano got her share this arc, while Sayuri will get hers during Mai’s though I’m worried about the exposure Kaori will get. She’s such a cool character too. And as a final note, Amano mentioning how half the people in the town are probably spiritual beings might be true actually (and makes me think that all the girls around Yuuichi are supernatural).

Plot Outline:

- Yuuichi goes out for a while leaving Makoto to play with Akiko
- He heads to school and finds Amano, convincing her to meet Makoto
- He then takes Makoto to see her
- Amano is able to console her to remember her own and Yuuichi’s names
- At night, Yuuichi, Makoto, Akiko and Nayuki head out for dinner
- Afterwards, they all take a photo together
- Later in the night, they all decide to have some fun with fireworks
- However, everything changes when Makoto comes down with the long dreaded fever
- Yuuichu stays by her side the whole night

- The next day, Makoto wakes up seemingly fine, though the mood has completely changed
- After Yuuichi takes Makoto out, Akiko starts crying
- He takes her to see Nayuki at school, who plays with her for a bit
- They then head to the Hill where Makoto came from
- After relaxing for the rest of the day, Yuuichi holds an unofficial wedding for the two of them
- Following the processions, Yuuichi continues to play with Makoto until she closes her eyes and disappears
- The next day, Yuuichi has a comforting conversation with Amano
- It seems that her experiences with the positive Yuuichi has allowed Amano to open up a bit, as she talks playfully with him
- Amano asks him about what he would wish for as a miracle, and obviously he wishes for Makoto’s return

Err …. that “Makoto and Piro sleeping together” is actually part of end Makoto route ending in the game, it seems they are adding the characters route endings (or at least parts of then).

This IS based on a eroge game.

Yet another excellent episode from KyoAni. I thought I would cry during this episode, but KyoAni have done an excellent job at making it not too sad. Yet.
A brilliantly touching episode, and beats everything in Assate no Houkou in my opinion.

No way Budding, no way. I find Kanon to be especially predictable even though I haven’t seen the 2002 version or played the game. Asatte no Houkou is a lot more down to earth as well. To each his/her own though. Not a bad episode though, I guess.

I dunno. I actually found Toei’s version more touching. It could be that Toei’s was my first time or that KyoAni’s Makoto arc was too long drawn. And yeah I’m with restgip here, Asatte is pwns Kanon with ep 8. Maybe Kanon can come back from behind with Ayu’s arc.

Not sure what KyoAni was trying to do - this episode was an utter disaster if you ask me. Terrible scripting, out-of-place music, and actions and plot lines that defy reason - even in a fantasy setting.

Forget about catching Asatte no Houkou, the runaway winner in the romance-drama category. Right now I’m wondering whether this show will even reach mediocrity.

But I have to give this show some credit for drawing in some die-hard fans; then again, Titanic and Star Wars Episode I and II had their share of fans as well. To each to his own, I suppose.

Drakon: uh-huh, i figured that out from iInano’s blog :-P

Budding: my thought’s exactly, it wasn’t as sad as I thought, yet very touching

retsgip: well, i can understand your dislike for the show and I also agree that Asatte no Houkou’s ep8 is still better

Stripey: i think Kanon will take precedence when Asatte’s finished, and yeah, Makoto’s slow degeneration was a bit stretched…

    dsong: …you’re killing me >_<

It’s not exactly Kanon problem, it just that every time I want to watch it during weekend nights problems occurred. So, I will watch it today!!! See if jinx will continues.

Darren: I hope you sort out your computer problem, things relating to essential electronics failing can be really frustrating!

Alafista: it was actually not as sad for me, and the last ‘hope’ scene lightened the mood up a lot. Actually, I got completely distracted from Makoto’s death by Amano’s cuteness :-P Call me heartless

acegunner: Nah, I think that’s meant to represent the miracle that Yuuichi wishes for

Exertim: ahh really? she seems more in control of the situation…

Well, the broken glass indicates that Mai’s arc will at least be part of the next episode. And Amano was really cute this episode. I’m glad she was that lively at the end and found friends in Yuuichi and Makoto, it helped to light up the mood a bit. Hope that we’ll see her again.

I’m new to Kanon [I have only seen to episode 12], But I fell in love with the Yuichi/Makoto pairing. I’m surprised that none of the other commenters have mentioned the fact that Makoto and Yuichi got Married, even if it wasn’t oficial. I’m so surprised that Yuichi seems so unnafected in the later episodes, seing as he was so torn up over Makoto dying. I think i’m going to have to stop watching the series at this point if Yuichi completely forgets Makoto and moves on. There is this little part of me hoping that the thing Ayu is missing is Makoto, who is like her other half…. All well. It’s too far fetched. I’m commenting like two years too late, but still, I had to rid of my love for this show.
