Kanon: Episode 1
Impressions:
That was amazing! Everything from Yuuichi on the train to the end of the preview was perfect. Quite a few people say that the episode was very slow and dragged on too much. If I were to think about it, I would agree with that, but my incredibly biased reasoning tells me that if the story progressed quicker, the series would have to cut short, would completely devastate me as this first episode has instantly hooked me. The quality is extremely high, as expected of KyoAni, who love to focus on the little details. The blinking, walking etc. Just from watching this first episode, I can say this will most likely be my favourite this season, and possibly even this year (which means better than Suzumiya Haruhi!)
The character design is really cute, and is almost the same as the character designs in Air. In fact, the whole show feels a lot like Air. The art and quality are the main two things that I love about this show, but there is another thing: Ayu. She is my favourite character so far. She is just so cute in every respect. Her ‘uguu’ screams kawai-ness; her absurd reasoning is comedy gold. The way she acts, the way she sounds…if Rena were there she’d put Ayu on display at her house. Ayu is voiced by Yui Horie who is famous for her long list of works. Some examples include Eri from School Rumble, Siesta from Zero no Tsukaima, Youko from Inukami and Mizuho Miyanokouji from Otome wa Boku ni Koi Shiteru.
The story seems to revolve around these slightly mystical/spiritual things, such as dreams, promises and…wings. I heard Ayu’s wings are an important part of the story. Speaking of which, the story seems quite interesting, especially the mystery past part, which solving it would make up most of the plot. Yes, many people think this to be boring, but the emotion that is put in lifts the feel of the series immensely. I’m sure the show will be sad, bleak at some points, cheerful, funny at others. I will definitely be blogging this show; I don’t need to see any more to be sure of that. In fact, all I had to see was the first few minutes of the show to know that I will love it. Can’t wait ’till the next ep!

Story:
Aizawa Yuuichi returns to the city he often visited during his childhood, but he hasn’t been there since seven years ago. Now he stays with his cousin and aunt in the city where he will live until at least he graduates from high school. Unfortunately though, Yuuichi can hardly remember anything from when he used to visit the city. He meets a young girl with winged backpack called Tsukimiya Ayu, who Yuuichi knew when he was young, but has since forgotten about her. However, his meeting with her triggers his memories to gradually start to return.

Plot Outline:
- Yuuichi travels by train to the city where his aunt and cousin lives
- He waits for two hours before his cousin comes to pick him up
- In a dream, the girl who’s eyes we see things through describes not being able to comfort a crying boy (who seems to be a young Yuuichi)
- Yuuichi wakes up in his new home
- Before Nayuki can run off to school for a club meeting, Yuuichi asks her to show him around the town afterwards
- As promised, Nayuki takes Yuuichi out to familiarise him with his new surroundings
- Along the way, they meet two of Nayuki’s classmates
- After, Nayuki goes shopping while Yuuichi is meant to stay outside
- As he is waiting, a girl called Ayu runs into him
- She drags Yuuichi into a restaurant to hide as she claims she is being chased
- It turns out she had made off with some taiyaki without paying for it, and now the owner of the taiyaki stand is looking for her
- Hearing this, Yuuichi drags Ayu back to the owner of the stand and pays for her
- When things get settled, the two finally introduce themselves. Hearing Yuuichi’s name, Ayu remembers him from the past, but doesn’t bring this up as Yuuichi doesn’t seem to remember
- Yuuichi remembers that Nayuki is waiting for him ad rushes back to the store. Nayuki appears quite sulky
- At home, Nayuki finally decides to forgive Yuuichi for leaving her as she was late to pick him up from the station, so now they’re even
- When Yuuichi falls asleep, he starts dreaming about a familiar incident seen years ago
- (dream) Yuuichi goes shopping with Nayuki but remains outside the store
- A crying Ayu bumps into him, which attracts the attention of others, thinking that she is being bullied by Yuuichi
- Because of this, Yuuichi grabs Ayu’s hand and pulls her along as he runs off

character animation always turns me off. I know it’s supposed to be a good story but I can’t bring myself to watch :/

I think Kanon will be one of my favourite series, too. Don’t know if it will top Suzumiya Haruhi, we’ll see. I loved this episode, the character design looks so much better than in the original series. And since it’s twice as long this time, I hope we get to see more things that the original series didn’t give us full exposure on.
What a great opener ep for Kanon, even though I watched the original, this still has me looking forward to the rest of the series. And that scene where Ayu was checking her wings was made of so much win, I lol’d for about 5 mins afterwards.

Wow. The remake of Kanon. It’s very nice! Seems Yuuichi chara design is a bit older than he was on the Old version. But still, thumbnails show that the remake is better than the first one.

Of course, the girls are still cute especially Shiori and Ayu-chan! I feel sorry for Nayu-chan though.
I’ll look forward of watching this!

I haven’t seen the original, but from screencaps I can say the remake looks a lot better. Of course, that’s expected of KyoAni!
Okay, I watched it.
I’m not impressed BUT i am strangely drawn in by the character’s “real” factor. I’ll be following this, but I really do prefer action or comedic romances.

Are anime like these funny? They remind me of Sailor Moon. ugh.
Sailor Moon? Pfft no way! Kanon is nothing like that. Firstly, Kanon is realistic, not a fantasy or anything. It may have some funny moments, but it is not a comedy nor is it driven by comedy. It’s a slice of life, drama, romance perhaps and may be emotional.
Say what! Why would anyone watch it? I want to identify myself with the main character… like with Kenpachi or Link from Death Note… ^ ^
The way I see it, the people who are going to go hardcore over this, are the same people who will go hardcore over other drama TV shows. Also, people who like drama but are afraid to watch a real drama, will probably enjoy this as well. So, we have like the first ever good drama anime that caters strictly to people who wanna watch drama. Did i say drama enough? I don’t think so!
Oh, and you relate because its realistic in nature, where as Kenpachi is uh…quite the opposite. You sound like a shounen/action type guy, so I dunno. I’m the same as you but I’m also a girly POS kind of guy so I sometimes like this kinda stuff. If you’re secretly girly behind your tough shounen shell, you might like this.
