Hayate the Combat Butler: Episode 5

Rating: 9/10

Impressions:

I’m pretty sure the order of things have been completely screwed up, but I don’t really mind. I may have said this before, but Hayate isn’t a show which has its storyline as its main entertainment factor. It is more the overall comedy and individual characters that make it enjoyable—at least for me that is. The rapid introduction of new characters though, is not that great a move in my opinion. It would be nice to slow the pace down and ease new characters into the show everyone now and then, instead of chucking everyone at once and progressing from there. It allows the characters to be more easily familiarised, unless you’ve already read the manga like me.

The two new characters introduced this episode are Isumi (Nagi’s friend), and Sakuya (Nagi’s cousin). Personally, I don’t really like either of them, but their implementation into the show does mean that two certain other characters will make their first appearance quite soon (and yeah, these two characters I find very entertaining). I’m also anticipating the introduction of Hayat’s old school mate, whose name I can never remember. Speaking of characters, I should go and read some more of the manga, since I have not touched Hayate no Gotoku in over a few months. Perhaps there are even more characters now.

I had major gripe with this episode because they haven’t done the Sanenzin (or whatever other crazy-ass way that Nagi’s last name is spelled as) main house arc yet, and as such there is no explanation for Hayate’s bad luck.

I know you’re right that the plot, as far as entertainment goes, is immaterial to Hayate, but I’m a sucker for coherent story. Giant, gaping plot holes like this makes me want to murderate someone.
