Death Note: Episode 7

Rating: 8/10

Impressions:

As this episode covered two chapters once again, I predict that episode 9 will be when Light meets L for the first time, but only as a cliff hanger. The real meeting will be in episode 10. That is, if the anime sticks to the episode-to-two-chapters ratio, though that will have to change sometime if the producers are going to fit the whole manga series into thirty seven episodes. Anyway, now that Naomi is gone (hanged herself), Light is in no immediate danger…or so he thinks. Next episode, Light finally gets specifically targeted by L. That will be a spectacle. As for this episode, the quality went down, but that’s not as important since the episode is mostly talk. The character designs become quite inconsistent, though the overall dark yet suspenseful feel of the show remains. The music is an excellent add-on to the already highly enthralling moments. Light’s plan may not be perfect, as there are plenty of flaws, but he managed to think something like that up under extreme pressure and mental stress. It’s like an amateur robber getting a police visit a week after the crime. Light’s ability to think under pressure like he does is highly impressive, though I think if L was in that situation, he would be more composed. I can’t wait until Light really starts showing his lunacy when the time comes.

This would have been quite a slow episode for manga readers, though it is another display of Light’s genius for the anime-only viewers. Naomi’s comment at the end of the episode regarding how Light reminds her of L is a significant indicator of the two masterminds’ likeliness. In fact, their similarities will be shown later in the series, which will make you think that L would probably take the same path that Light has if he had received it under the same circumstances. And if Light hadn’t received the Death Note, he would be pure good and do an excellent detective job like L. But once again, I still think Light is less composed than L. He seriously started panicking when he realised Shouko was a fake name, and even began worrying about his phone ringing. His brain had been in turmoil at that moment, but he managed to pull himself together and devise a feeble strategy that ended up succeeding. Under normal circumstances, such a good ex-FBI agents such as Naomi would not have believed that Light was in on the investigation. However, Naomi was also suffering from mental stress and probably depression symptoms as well, which Light used to his advantage. She had wanted to give what she knew to L at all costs and help in avenging her fiancée that she fell for such a suspicious lie.

Oh and, here’s a little teaser with Light and Misa. Show Spoiler ▼

Plot Outline:

- Light questions Naomi about what she knows about Kira, but uses this to write out her death in a torn out piece from his Death Note (which he specifies as suicide 48 hours from now)
- Ryuk starts laughing strangely but Light doesn’t take much notice
- L determines that none of the police in his hotel is Kira
- When Naomi doesn’t die after 40 seconds and Ryuk’s laughter intensifies, Light concludes that the name she gave him earlier was in fact a fake name
- As Naomi is determined to go back to the police station, Light realises he has to get her real name in five minutes without making it suspicious or using force
- L gets a call from Watari and tells him to come up to his hotel
- Watari reveals himself to be an old man
- He then gives out new fake badges to the police, as well as tracking belts

- After a lot of thought, Light finally thinks of something
- He tells Naomi that it will be impossible for her to speak to L since he is investigating in secret now
- Light explains to her that he is a member of L’s team and that he is able to freely investigate
- However, Naomi still insists on meeting with him
- She says that she had worked under L once before, so he might agree to meet with her now
- Light stops her and asks her to join the investigation
- Making it highly believable, he manages to convince Naomi to agree
- She then shows her drivers license with her real name
- Light uses this to write another entry on a sheet of the Death Note
- Before it takes affect, Light tells Naomi that he is Kira
- Naomi’s actions are then taken over by the death note as she proceeds to find a way to commit suicide

Naomi didnt hang herself, that was a simple symbolism, geez !
Those who hang themselves are found most quickly. And Naomi wasnt ever found, in manga.

Your rating must be due to the fact that you read the manga because I found this episode to be pretty powerful. The usage of music during scene where Naomi hands over her license and then afterwards when she walks away, was amazing. I felt like crying, but then I was like wait…”you got owned!”

Actually, the rating was lower because the quality fluctuated a bit too much this episode. And in the manga, it wasn’t shown how she died. Screw the symbolism, geez!

Its not shown how she died here either. Screw you, man.

If they’re going to show what I expect they will next episode, looking at that preview, that’s 3 manga chapters. (Just checked). That’s interesting, because I agree with the thought that they’d leave Light and L’s meeting on that cliffhanger… but that’s only 1 chapter, then. :\ Hmm: guess I’ll see how it goes.

(Vague because I have no clue how you use spoiler tags).

One question, what music was played during the ID scene ? Sounds like something Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy misic composer) would write.

Er…what’s the ID scene? DO you mean the OP? And karnot, there’s no way to resolve this argument unless you go ask one of the Death Note scriptwriters or something, so let’s just leave it at that. And for spoilers, do this <spoiler>THIS IS A SPOILER</spoiler>

I think the whole episode was executed perfectly with the symbolism of the suicide and everything. Any more or any less would have either stressed unnesesary points or not given enough information. This, like pretty much every other episode, was definitely amazing.

Well I think this episode is actually pretty good. I think it is more stunning than the manga itself. It gives more tension, that is. Then again, music added to the tension quite well too.
