Death Note: Episode 2

Impressions:
Warning: these next three paragraphs are very spoilery. Even though I’ve read the manga, I am unexpectedly VERY excited about L’s appearance. The ultimate battle of wits and smarts between the world’s most brilliant thinkers has begun!! AAAHHH~I’m going all hypo about this! Everything is brilliant; L proving his reputation so early and Light starting to show what he his capable of with the trap set for the Death Note. Both characters vibrate with awesomeness and I can’t get enough of them. Now I really want a sequel to the manga but I know that’s impossible. I think both L and Light are cool because of their deductive thinking, but I know a lot of people despise Light and think he is evil. Well, I didn’t think he was evil as in maniacal, tyrannic evil but a lesser type of evil. The anime though, shows Light in a different light altogether (hey, a pun!) If I hadn’t read the manga I would think of Light as truly evil from this episode – this means a lot more people should hate Light in the anime than the manga…such a pity; Light is such an uber, ownage-reeking character.

On the other hand, a lot of people adore L (like me), which is why a lot of people are going to despise the series eventually, but then get over it (like me again) when the anime sort of redeems itself (I emphasize the ’sort of’). Anyway, as much as I like L’s and Light’s battle of wits and everything, the next thing I would like to see is Misa, but that’s still a long time away. It was good when she’s first introduced, but her impact sort of wore off after a while when she became nothing but a pawn. It would have been so much cooler if she was actually smart enough to play a more major part in the story except that one time near the end. I had also been hoping for a three way battle between Misa, L and Light when I got up to that part in the manga, but those hopes were shattered quite quickly. Wow, I’m talking about Misa so much when she hasn’t even been introduced in the anime. I think one reason for me wanting to see her is that she is voiced by Hirano Aya, as many other blogs and I have said about a hundred times already. I wonder whether Hirano will use deep tone like Haruhi…that’d be so weird! o_O

I’ve always thought about who was smarter, L or Light. Actually, it’s not to do with how smart you are in the sense of how knowledgeable you are, but to what extent your brain can work to as well as how creative you are. I can tell you right now if you don’t know, there is a clear winner when it comes to L and Light, so if I go by that I can easily say that *** is the better thinker. Buuut, I haven’t taken into account anything else. Light has the Death Note book which should clearly be a huge advantage, but L’s unknown identity protects it from him. L has the co-operation of the world’s police and everything under his control, which is a pretty big advantage, as Light has to continue with his crime even under such pressure. When you’re fighting a war this big you have to be able to think under constraints which Light does extremely well. Then L having the Japanese police on his side is also an advantage to Light (you’ll see). Another question is who is the hero? That comes down to who you like more, and in the first half of the manga, it was a tie between L and Light, but that changed after…

Plot Outline:
- Light returns from school and resumes killing criminals
- His sister asks him for help on maths and upon entering his room, Ryuk tells Light that anyone who touched the Death Note will be able to see him
- At Interpol, representatives from all around the world have gathered to discuss the crisis regarding the deaths of criminals, as it has become apparent that it is not coincidence
- Watari, the assistant of L, makes an appearance and announces L’s cooperation in the case regarding the deaths of over 50 criminals from heart attacks
- L deduces immediately that this is murder and not coincidence

- L starts talking and asks for cooperation from all the major intelligence/security forces around the world
- Light sets up an ingenious trap to hide his Death Note
- Light doesn’t seem to have much of a heart as he doesn’t care about killing his own family or burning down the house
- L starts taking action and broadcasts a live report conducted by himself
- He introduces himself, shows his face and announces he will catch Light
- Light kills L with the Death Note but it appears the one who died was not the real L
- The real L starts talking and reveals his plan to narrow down his search for Light to Kantou in Japan
- Light accepts this as a challenge from L
- Ryuk comments on how interesting humans are

whoa that was intense! L is now my fave character! he’s awesome
This is one anime that I wish was already done because I’m really enjoying it. It was impressive to see LIght thinking that he had all of the bases covered: the possiblity of killing his family without any remorse, that he knew the police would eventually investigate, he kills the guy that he thinks is a cop, etc, only to have something unexpected crop up in the form the real L. And the morality of his actions. For me, this adds up to some good viewing.
It is just so cool to see someone on Light’s side xD From what people have been saying and telling me, I feel like I’m gonna flop and root for L in the end, but it’s nice to see someone who knows Light and is still on his side. It’s interesting how people who’re on L’s side want Light to die, for isn’t that mentality exactly why people hate Light to begin with? Because he kills criminals? I guess morals have exceptions, ne?
I was so excited back when I read thar L was gonna be voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi, and so far it sounds great, as I expected it would. I look forward seeing more of him! In the manga, I always rooted for Raito when it came down to the case, but I can’t really pick a favourite, characterwise. L is the more interesting guy, but Raito’s.. I dunno, I just think they complement each other so well, none of them is really that interesting without the other. I just love their little “games” in outwitting the other ;P I remember a friend of mine reading volume one, and she asked me why Raito didn’t just hide the Death Note behind some books in the bookshelf or something. It was difficuly to explain how we’re talking about a completely different level of intelligence here ^__~
