Impressions:

This episode brings us to the end of volume 6, and it’s a pretty fun episode if you ask me. Although I don’t really like this arc, this episode is surprisingly good. I don’t exactly like or dislike many of the characters, but I found Matsuda’s little escapade to become a more useful detective quite amusing and a nice change from the usual Light and L. What this arc is lacking is brain power and intelligence, though the plan devised by L to fake Matsuda’s death is pretty good. There’s still quite a long way to go until the end of this arc, and that signifies quite an important event, that’s probably easy to guess.

The pacing needs to increase soon, as this episode squeezes one chapter in the last few minutes of the show. They need to start using around 3 chapters per episode now in order to finish the manga in the allocated 37 episodes. But at the moment it doesn’t matter, and if it turns out that the producers decide to make an anime-original ending, we can hope it’s not crap, and it will be something knew that no one will be expecting. As I have said before, I really don’t like the manga ending, so a new and unique ending would be fun. Unless it’s even worse than the real ending.

This episode features Light thinking about how he would never kill people if he ever got the Death Note, but in fact, he does kill people when he obtains it (first episode). This just strengthens the claim that L could be exactly like Light and use the Death Note to try and cleanse the world. However, I have to say that now, L seems to be more like Shinigami-Light than human-Light in terms of their demeanour. Normal Light is a bit too good for my liking. Anyway, I’m looking forward to the new OP and ED in episode 20. From screencaps, the animation looks good. Hopefully the song will be suitable as well.
