Impressions:

This episode is probably the most exciting yet. The awesome music accompaniment really increases tension and thrill, and I now I would be on the edge of my seat the whole time, anxiously awaiting the next second to arrive, every second of the show if I hadn’t read the manga. The other obvious highlight is the looooong-awaited appearance of the reaaal star of the show: Misa!! And to top it off she’s voiced by Hirano Aya using her Suzumiya Haruhi voice. OMG I can not wait to see at light’s knees begging to be his girlfriend, wearing those revealing clothes…Uh-oh, I think that was a spoiler. And next episode is apparently a recap (what’s with these damn recaps lately?) so that sucks. At least it seems like there will be more Misa judging by the preview. When I first read the manga, I had become extremely excited at the prospect of a third side, another evil genius, just more evil, with the power of the Shinigami’s eyes. Surely it would stir things up between the even Light and L match-up. Any sort of interference would be good, I thought.

But then she teams up with Light. That still excited me, as I thought perhaps she could have some ulterior motive or actually just be smart enough to think for herself, but she does become rather useless… Well, people should just watch her for the sake of watching her! She does look more mature in the short flash of her face we get this episode, but she IS older than Light. Oh well, it doesn’t really matter. Now all I have to do is hope that she does not suffer from badly drawn frames; the animators would be committing a terrible sin if that ever happens. Anyway, L being caught off guard and his over exaggerated ‘phone-calling’ is priceless! So is the evil smirk Light sports when he sees the broadcast by Misa. I know I would’ve been shocked and wowing at the screen if I didn’t know it was the work of a second Kira. L’s pretty good to determine it’s a fake though. And now his plans are finally coming into accordance with Light. Both he and L are setting up the same scenario for themselves, each hoping to gain an advantage of the other. Should be fun!

The police barricade is pretty impressive, as is Yagami’s performance. It does go to show that he is easily affected by his emotions, and this combined with his family pride are probably what’s preventing him from suspecting his own son. No matter how you look it, Light is still the most likely suspect L and the taskforce have. And now we get to see what happens when two mortal enemies start working in close proximity. We can expect a lot of competitiveness, as it’s been clearly explained that both L and Light are very immature when it comes to ‘games’. Anyway, this episode covers three chapters; 23-25. I think it would have been better to end the episode with the chapter 24 cliff-hanger, which is when Light sees the report and starts smirking, though then it remains a mystery that there is a second Kira. I also think the producers should’ve hid Misa’s face until the next episode though. This is the picture of Misa in the last page of chapter 25, which she looks so much cuter in. Hmm, I think I might put up some more manga scans of Misa next time to compare.

Plot Outline:

- As L is discussing further plans with his taskforce, Watari comes in and informs them of some interesting news
- Being told to turn on the news, L does so and flicks to the Sakura news station
- Apparently, Kira is sending a message to the world through pre-recorded tapes and seeks the police for co-operation
- As the tape is being broadcast, one of L’s men drives up to the station, gets out of the car but is promptly killed
- L stops anyone else from going as it would be suicide
- Yagami though, who is still in hospital, steals a van and drives into the station, without coming to harm
- He threatens the boss at the station to kill him if he does not stop the broadcast and hand over the tapes
- L then prepares a special method of extracting Yagami
- As he walks outside, Yagami is greeted by a barricade of masked police, so that Kira cannot kill anyone

- Yagami is able to get to L’s HQ safely and hands over the tapes
- After seeing the tapes, which were recorded based on whether the police decided to co-operate or not, L allows the one corresponding to a disagreement from the police to be broadcast
- The tape demands that L be sacrificed for the police’s unwillingness to co-operate, otherwise the head of the police will die
- L doesn’t seem too concerned though, as Kira has given him four days to respond
- In that time, he hopes to recruit Light and test him further, as well as come up with a plan to save himself
- Light, however, is amused by the tapes as he knows he did not do it
- L comes up with the same conclusion; there is a second Kira
- Elsewhere, Misa (the second Kira) and her Shinigami, Rem, are walking through the streets
