Death Note: Episode 10

Rating: 8.7/10

Impressions:

I think what’s eating me now is the anticipation of the next episode. The end of the episode, with the appearance of the tapes must have many viewers wondering, though for me and other eager manga readers, it’s the signal that Misa is only one step away from appearing. She should make her grand debut next episode, and if not, the episode after. Anyway, the quality is slightly higher this episode but still nothing to brag about. The tennis match was a bit of a disappointment though. It isn’t nearly as exciting as I hoped it would be, and although the slow motion during the simultaneous monologues is used to great affect, I would’ve preferred some faster scenes as well, since this is a note-worthy tennis match between two excellent players. Whenever Light and L meet, Light is always forced to face the same predicament; how to act. The problem is, no matter how he acts, he will gain more suspicion. If he acts suspiciously and how L thinks he will act, then of course the suspicion will rise, though if he comes out clean, then the suspicion will rise nevertheless since it means he is too perfect. Light could also have completely laughed or shrugged off L’s attacks. L wouldn’t be able to do anything to him and he can continue to kill as he usually does. But his competitive nature kicks in and makes him play along with L. Now, his motives are not just to get rid of L, but to defeat him.

Light’s dad presents an interesting topic for discussion when he mentions how he’s beginning to think that it’s the power to kill that’s evil, and not the person himself. So if Light hired a hitman to kill L, it’s the hitman who’s evil, but no, it’s the weapon he uses to kill that’s evil. And what if the hitman killed L by strangling him? Does that mean it’s his hands that are evil? Or does that amount back to the hitman himself? With this philosophical idea, you could come to the conclusion that no murderer is evil, but their tools? o_O Anyway, what I was gonna say is that without the ‘evil’ that is the Death Note, Light would’ve turned out almost exactly like L (trust me when I say this), which is why I think L would do what Light is doing now if he gets it under the same conditions as Light. L doesn’t really want to be justice and save the world from evil or anything, he just wants to beat Kira and show who’s smarter. This is exactly why this show is so fun; you pit to insanely smart people with same personalities against each other, only setting the stage up so that one has a machine gun and the other has camouflage and a knife. Actually, that’s not a very good example since you can attribute either to Light or L. What I mean is, you could say that L is the one with the machine gun looking for Kira, who is under the camouflage and killing people stealthily with his knife, and as soon as he finds him, he can shoot. But, you could also say that Light is the one with the machine gun, killing people from afar and is looking for L’s real name, who is under the camouflage. Ehh, that has nothing to do with anything so I’ll stop now. :-P

Some of those tennis shots were SO overdone that I found myself laughing. Good stuff. I’m glad they insert a minor amount of comedy within a jumble of seriousness.

Also, I’m took the evil they were talking about wasn’t the actual act of killing. It was the ABILITY to kill so easily that is evil. When someone mysteriously gains that sort of power, they would be hard pressed to not become corrupted. Power corrupts and that corruption is evil.

WOW Light and L are like perfect! Uber smart and really good at sports too, though Light is evil! xDD But at the end with the tape ooh that’s a big surprise, though I didnt think Light would go public like that o_O

Would L really do what Light’s doing if he had the Death Note? L seems to have such a higher standard of morals, though then again, L is being protrayed like that xP Him and Light are fundamentally doing the same thing. But I can agree that Light would be just like L if he never came across the Death Note, which is a shame xD

And maybe Light’s father will go easy on him with a philiosopy like that if he finds out Light really is Kira xD

Whispered.Hope: I think what Light’s dad says is quite practical, and that L would lose all his previous morals and fall for the trap that is the death note.

Alafista: YESS Misa!! It will probably be next episode if it covers 3 chapters, since this one covered 3 chapters as well. though even if she does appear, it should only be a brief appearance at the end! Cant wait…

At first I thought they going to bring out Misa before the 10th episode but now she still yet to be seen. As for Light, I kinda confuse whether it was “Light? or “Raito? since some of the older translation from the manga is “Raito? and the newer version is “Light?. Since he’s Japanese, my guessing is Raito but I’ll still maintain it as Light since most fansub are using it.

The Death Note manga is oh so dark, and the anime seems to be following it quite closely, so I’m sure Misa will appear. The series is planned (unless it was recently changed) to run for 37 episodes, so there’s tons of time left.

Darren: Well I guess it’s your preference as to what you call him. I mean, my name in katakana would be Dani…which would you call me? Dani or Danny? I would certainly choose Danny though…

Exertim: The anime is going at a comfortable pace, though I wouldn’t call the remaining 27 episodes ‘tons of time’, considering the amount of manga still to be covered. Although, there are quite a few action scenes later on so it will probably speed up then
