Darker than BLACK: Episode 5

Rating: 9.8/10

Impressions:

This was certainly one awesome episode, one which is making me rethink about my placements of Lucky Star first and Darker than BLACK second on my favourite’s for this season list. But anyway, I really need to watch the entire series before I can be sure of any of my ratings and such. Anyway, this episode introduces the British MI6, which really excites me as it seems Hei finally has someone who seems to be equal to him in terms of power. They are both quite ruthless as well, though it seems their ideals are pretty far apart. Hei actually seems nice at times…or is his deceitful attitude apparent 24/7?

Hei isn’t exactly a ‘good’ guy, but the MI6 aren’t any closer to being good guys than he is. I like Hei’s personality though, and his mysterious and devious nature makes me root for him. I’m sure that he’s meant to be the hero, though with cases like Death Note and Code Geass, it could be either way. The reason why Darker than BLACK’s hero should be Hei is there is no established opposition of equal power, which otherwise should have been apparent from the beginning. Death Note had L vs Light, while Code Geass had a more vague pairing, possibly between Lelouch and Suzaku (or Cornelia). Perhaps this anime will introduce such a pairing soon.
