Darker than BLACK: Episode 25 (END)

Rating: 9/10
Overall Series Rating: 9/10
Impressions:
It’s 2:30AM and I’m really tired, so please excuse me if I say anything retarded. Well, Darker than Black has ended, and thankfully, the ending doesn’t screw up the masterpiece that is the rest of the show. I wouldn’t consider it a favourite of mine, since I am, by heart, a big explosions and overpowered protagonist fan. I just swing that way. xD However, I’m not dense enough to fail to see the magnificence of the series that DtB is. I had to adjust to the slower-than-shounen pacing, but once I did, I learned to appreciate the thought-provoking abilities and storytelling of the show, as well as the excellent cast.

The ending leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Many people will be disappointed by this—many people who love the show will feud over those who are disappointed—and some people, like me I guess, will be sort of in between. I too, agree that there are many things unanswered. But I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. Let’s not forget that, although not many things are wrapped up, the actually ‘plot’ is. The plot has a clear and definite ending, and that’s the important thing. Whether the many mysteries of the DtB are answered are not depend on whether the producers want viewers to be satisfied with absolute knowledge, or rack their brains with crazy speculation.

I reckon, the genius of DtB is the way they end the series so gently, and leave a large portion to the imagination. Will we ever find out more about contractors, dolls, the Syndicate etc? Probably not. A few things seem to be apparent though. Hei and Yin are alive. Amber is dead. There are probably many more new contractors now, and many are probably ‘evolving’ into humans. Or is it the other way around? Or perhaps, the ultimate future that which the seer has been seeing for years now, is a world where natural evolution has taken humans and contractors on a journey, which ends with the creation of a hybrid of the two species. Like Hei I guess. I guess he really was special.

I kinda got off track there—I was talking about the ending of DtB lol. Anyway, I had wanted to say that DtB chooses an ending that is quite rare among the vast libraries of anime out there. Essentially, they end it differently. There’s no big boss fight, no concrete ‘life-goes-on’ ending (since we’re not even sure what happens to Hei and yin), and hardly anything is explained in detail. This could just be a ploy by the producers to leave space for a possible sequel, but I like to see the good sides of things, and trust that the story-writers are just geniuses in their execution of the show. The ‘different’ ending that DtB has makes it truly memorable.

I liked sola for the awesome characters. I liked Gurren Lagann for its craziness and hilarity. I liked Claymore for its shounen-esque story and fighting. I liked Seirei no Moribito for its pleasant feel and plot. And the final spring 2007 series which I enjoyed immensely is Darker than Black. To put it shortly, I enjoyed DtB for its pacing, characters, seriousness and air of uniqueness. I wouldn’t mind a sequel, but only if the producers find another string of the plot to work on. There are so many, it wouldn’t be too hard. All in all, I’m glad I decided to blog at least one of the series I loved in spring 2007 (I failed to pick up sola, Claymore, Gurren Lagann and Seirei no Moribito in time T_T).

Darker than Black was definitely one of my favourite shows of this year.
I really really enjoyed it though I’m not that satisfied with the ending.
But on the other hand it leaves space for a second season.
Towards the Terra actually has a very similar ending to DtB, come to think of it.
Yes, Darker than BLACK is unique in a lot of ways, i think that the time will give it the place that it really deserves.
Darker than BLACK hold a piece of my heart. Thanks for blogging it.
People are saying that their will be an OVA with full confidence; where are they hearing this? I am ripe for a whole second season myself. This was a great ending for a season, but a crappy ending for an entire series.
i absolutely loved this show. it is one of the best show ive seen recently. and i thought the ending was pretty good.
lovely ending , season 2 please !
anyone knows what pai and hei’s powers actually are? amber keeps saying that electricity is only 1 small portion of pai’s ability, that hei knows what her real ability is…but what exactly is it?
It’s too bad they didn’t go into more detail with Mai (the flame contractor first seen in episode 3). I didn’t even know that she was amongst the deceased until the dream portion of this episode where you can clearly see her in the back next to Zhijun.
The ending was alright, although it’s a bit too open ended for my tastes if there truly will not be any follow ups to it (e.g. OVA or second season).
mei, Bai’s and Hei’s abilities are the capability of manipulating matter at an atomic level (or something similar), and thus can turn certain things into other things. The example given was that Hei’s power is able to change a human into a contractor, which is what Bai probably did to Hei.
I love Darker than Black.
I felt the ending was a little bit fast paced than the rest of the series, but I like anyways.
It’s also too open ended for me… a sequel, maybe?
Totally agree with ” wouldn’t mind a sequel, but only if the producers find another string of the plot to work on. There are so many, it wouldn’t be too hard.”
just frekin awesome…
quite good ending.
hmmm…
can anyone tell me about the last scene where we see yin’s oberservor spirit manifesting into the shape of yin herself?
that can mean that the dolls are evolving and that’d be SO cool XD
and the ending, i think, was good as it is..
the plot finished and yeah..
but it left a lot of space for a sequel..
now that hei and yin noe about the syndicate..
they might finish what amber started..
hmm..
but it wont be the same without Mao TT-TT
i love mao and yin the best XD
I don’t think they’re going to finish what “Amber” started (reply to Sadistic). Because Amber’s EPR syndicate was meant to get the meteor fragment and make 1500 Km of Japan be casted into the void.
I really recommend this: People, RE-WATCH DARKER THAN BLACK A SECOND TIME! IT IS SO FREAKING AWESOME YOU’LL NOTICE THINGS THAT YOU DIDN’T NOTICE THE FIRST TIME. All the ethics and everything will surge aaaaaaaaall back into you.
(But, if you’re not into philosophy, then you might not have enjoyed it as I have) =D
This anime… is perfect.
^_^
They have a Loooooooooooooooot of explaining to do, so I really hope they will either have a next season of an OVA which answers questions!!!!
e.g. like where did Yin go? etc.
Love this series, I wish there will be more, but frankly doubt there will be a second season but more of hoping for a OVA. But although there were a lot of loose threads in the last episode, I still find the conclusion to DTB……how di i put it…….makes sense?
but no where near SATISFYING!!!!!
Wish for more……sigh…….
ah~~~~~~~~it was such a long time ago, that’s the best work in this year, until now I always thought the smile of Amber, DtB makes me feel warm in this cold world, maybe DtB is a healing animation in my mind
Love Darker than Black! One of my top animes, definitely.
I do wish there’d be a second season, where some of the questions driving me mad will be answered.
i am seriously feeling like wanting to rewatch darker than black. great, it’s 230am and i cant sleep cos of the question marks running around in my head and am too tired to start rewatching.
i just watched dtb for the second time since it first came out, and yeah its the best anime of all time i think. the main character doesnt yell out a battle cry and names his moves and his power level isnt over 9000. i just wanted to know if any one knew where to find the song (heis battle theme) its in ep 1, 10 and 14 i think(the guitar) but even more important the one at the end of this episode when the stargazer lady is talking. i NEED TO KNOW, it would be greatley appreciated. ps; i’d murder for a second season
