Code Geass – Lelouch of the Rebellion: Episode 8

Rating: 9.5/10

Impressions:

The best episode to date! I think this one has pushed Code Geass to no.1 on my fall season list, surpassing Death Note and Kanon. Everything is simply too good in this magnificent show! The winnage here is the delicious plot, though the action and explosions definitely heighten the experience. Lelouch’s speech at the end is admirable, if I must say. Sure, he’s still an anti-hero since he kills mercilessly, but now that his true intentions have been revealed (or have they?) he turns out to be more of a good protagonist than I thought. I’m especially glad he’s not like the retard Suzaku, otherwise the show would have never succeeded past episode 1. His conviction in his goal of aiding the weak, and not according to whether one is Japanese or Britannian, should no doubt bring the majority of people to his side. His establishment of the Order of Black Knights is a sight to see as well, especially with their badass uniforms. Lelouch seems serious when he’s delivering that speech, since he has much reason to be truthful, so I won’t bother myself with doubt for now. I’m also surprised no one can guess it’s Lelouch under that mask, since his voice is only slightly deeper when he’s playing Zero. Surely Nanaly would have noticed, having lived with him for all her life.

This also brings me to ponder about Lelouch’s relationship with Cornelia and Euphemia (Yuffie). I’m pretty sure Cornelia is older than Lelouch, and she is a full sister of Euphemia, which doesn’t really explain how they and Lelouch became family. Is the Emperor of Britannia even Lelouch’s real father? Was he brought into royalty from a remarriage by his mother, or did this happen to Cornelia and Yuffie? Perhaps those two’s mother died and the Emperor married Lelouch’s mother to bring him and Nanaly into the world. Does this even matter? I’d really like to see the reaction on everyone’s faces if/when Lelouch reveals his connection to Cornelia and Yuffie. I would love to see everyone’s reactions when/if Lelouch reveals his relationship with them. It would be great drama. Speaking of that, the little bits of anxiety scattered throughout the episode is excellent in spicing things up, even though some of it piss me off. The main thing I want to get off my chest is that girl with Shirley and Millay, Nina. God I hate that girl, she’s so racist! I was hoping she’d get punished by the Japanese Liberation Front goons, but sadly Yuffie stood up for her just in time. It’s so damn annoying seeing that girl cowering in the Japanese’s presence, so I say give her a reason to be afraid! (Get what I mean?) Note on animation: Shirley’s head is too small.

Plot Outline:

- Shirley, Millay and Nina go on a trip to some tourist attraction
- Nina expresses her fear of Elevens but is comforted by her two companions
- Zero sets up the new headquarters for his operations and have his group of rebels help him renovate the place
- On the news, it is reported that the Japanese Liberation Front has taken some hostages
- A video of the hostages is shown, revealing Shirley, Millay and Nina
- Zero’s attention is piped at this and immediately starts thinking of a plan to rescue them
- Cornelia also tries to come up with a way to save them, since Yuffie is among the hostages
- Meanwhile back at school, C.C. appears to be talking to herself about Lelouch
- Upon presenting the rebellion’s new uniform, Zero tells Kaname that they are allies of justice
- Elsewhere, Suzaku decides to prioritise his own organisation before his personal emotions
- However, when he sees a hostage get pushed off a skyscraper in the distance, he becomes infuriated

- Cornelia’s past with Yuffie is briefly touched upon, and somehow, she’s pretty cute
- Suzaku reminisces about how Shirley had invited him on the trip to the tourist attraction
- In the containing room for the hostages, Nina makes the mistake of calling the captors ‘Elevens’
- She is about to be punished but Yuffie stands up and announces her title
- After a meeting with Cornelia and promising to save Yuffie, Zero makes his way to see the leader of the Resistance
- Apparently, Zero isn’t all that happy with the Resistance’s motives and kills them off
- Yuffie comes in to see the leader of the Resistance but gets a conversation with Zero instead
- At the same time, Suzaku blasts through an underground tunnel to destroy the building’s supports
- However, several explosives are detonated and it looks as if all the hostages have died
- Fortunately, Zero announces on a stolen TV camera that he has saved all the hostages
- He also reveals his new organisation, the Order of Black Knights, and states that he is here to help the weak and kill the oppressors

There are some odditites with the royal family. During the conversation between Lelouch and Clovis, it is revealed that Lelouch is the 17th successor to the throne, and that the two are half-brothers. From this it is safe to assume that Emperor Britannia is their common father, and they had different mothers. Cornellia, Clovis, and Euphemia all recognize each other as true siblings, yet Euphemia is identified as being a year younger than Lelouch (at least, on the official website). This suggests that either Lelouch and Nanaly are officially recognized children of Emperor Britannia’s mistress, or that Emperor Britannia did not have a monogamous relationship. Or in other words, he had more than one wife at the same time.

thank you David for clearing things up. He probably did have more than one wife since that was common in the past wasn’t it?

@ David : well , if i remember correctly , Lelouch mother’s title is Empress of Britannia . So yea , i guess that means the Emperor is allowed to practice Polygamy

The emperor had many imperial wives. More wives = more children. More Children = better management of captured territories and more candidates for the throne.

The emperor encourages conflict, that may be the reason why Lelouch’s mother was killed, because the other wives are jealous because her son is the next in line on the throne and she was formerly a commoner.

Lelouch drops the title, get thrown in Japan, Clovis becomes the new Next in Line.
