Code Geass - Lelouch of the Rebellion: Episode 3

Impressions:
Episode 3 was greeaaat! I now like it more than Death Note, but mainly because I’ve read the manga. I was going to do an entry on ‘Death Note vs. Code Geass’ or something, but I found it to be unnecessary work for me even though I have exams next week. Which also means my blogging frequency should drop by the weekend or I might even go on a short hiatus. Anyway, as for why Code Geass is so good, it’s basically the same as Death Note but with a bit of school life and mecha, which make it that much better than the detective-only style that Death Note uses. I’m sure Death Note has more complex puzzles and reasoning (coming from both Light and L) than Code Geass’ Lelouch. Even so, Code Geass just feels like more, if you know what I mean. Besides, I’d prefer watching anime with teenagers than adults since they are usually more diverse with personalities and create more fun. Although, a show like Black Lagoon is good too with the interesting characters. You know…this might take over Kanon as first place in my books (for this season).

The quality remains quite high and no facial distortions so far. I really like the way the animators portray emotion in the characters, especially Lelouch’s evil and annoyed look. His personality is really likeable too (that’s IF you consider him a good hero). Apart from his merciless scheming side, the persona he takes at school is really convincing and he seems like your average school-life lead, except with a milder and more mature attitude. As of episode 3, it seems like there is only one person who he truly cares about, and that is his sister, Nanaly. She is the reason why Lelouch is going this far to lift the war and oppression from Japan. Does that mean she’s royalty too? Their history together and relation to the political world is still quite a mystery, so I’m looking forward to see that. I wonder if there’s any treatment for Nanaly’s blindness anyway, as Lelouch seemed to suggest it. Apart from her, the only other person that comes close to being important to Lelouch is Suzaku, who I think will get closer to Lelouch after he saves him (that’s IF he does, which I think he will).

The introduction of Karen is a nice touch, and there may also be some development between her and Lelouch. I didn’t think he’d see her naked this early in the series! And she didn’t seem to mind too much afterwards either. Another thing she forgot is that Lelouch knows she isn’t the frail girl that she claims to be, which would be a big problem. I assume Lelouch saw the knife that she held him down with too, so Karen should be worried about that too. Despite those little abnormalities which could be resolved in the next episode or so, I find her addition to Lelouch’s life a rather interesting one, as she’ll provide a challenge for Lelouch in the future most likely, as well as entertainment for now. I wonder if Lelouch is capable of romance…he shows he can love because of his sister, but will he take the same path as Light and aim to dominate the world above all else (oops said too much – oh well, you know my posts contains spoilers sometimes). When Lelouch used his power on Karen, I was rather disappointed as I wanted him to win with intellect instead (which he did do eventually), but with the revelation of the fact that his power only works on the same person once makes it much fairer. Otherwise the ride would be too smooth!

Plot Outline:
- Lelouch demands that Clovis tells him about their mother’s death, and it is revealed she was killed probably because she was actually of commoner heritage
- After using his powers on Clovis, he reveals to Lelouch that Second Prince Schnauzer and Second Princess Cornelia are likely to know about their mother’s murder
- Lelouch then kills Clovis and returns to life at school…for the time being
- In class, he sees Karen, a frail girl who is always sick, and realises she is actually the Knightmare Frame pilot from the rebels last episode
- He talks to her outside and forces the truth about her identity out of her with his power, but when he tries to use it again to seal her mouth, it doesn’t work
- He quickly makes off when given the chance as he knows he just stuffed up bad
- At the student council room where he lives, he has dinner with his blind sister Nanaly

- The next day, Lelouch decides to test his powers on a teacher by using it to make him reveal the questions on an exam
- It works the first time, but not the second, so Lelouch concludes that his power can only be used on any one person once
- After class, Lelouch walks up to Karen and asks to speak with her, to which she agrees saying that she had expected him to do so
- This is because she had received a call earlier and the location of the battle some days ago was mentioned, which is what Lelouch told her to not reveal when his power wouldn’t work
- They both decide to settle this at the student council room, but are interrupted by the other student council members
- Karen is immediately recruited into the council without even asking her and she is introduced to all the members, including Nanaly
- During a small squabble, Karen gets alcohol on her and goes to take a shower
- Lelouch takes her some spare clothes, but before he can leave Karen stops him to talk with him
- She tricks him into giving her purse to her to grab his hand and hold it down with a knife (this is all behind the curtains mind you)

- She accuses him of being the voice who commanded the rebel force earlier, but she gets a call from…Lelouch! (it’s a recording)
- Recognising that the phone call was made by the guy from earlier, she eliminates all suspicion from Lelouch
- However, during the process, the curtain around the shower gets thrown open and Karen stands naked in front of Lelouch for quite some time before he points it out and she squats to cover herself
- Lelouch quickly lets himself out and says he won’t tell anyone that he saw her
- Afterward, he and Karen make their way back to the club room where they see a news report on TV, where apparently the one responsible for Clovis’ murder has been apprehended – and it turns out to be Suzaku!

I thinks this anime is great too! THe animation sure is good and the character design by CLAMP is too damn cool!!!! This is coming from someone who thought Tsubasa Resevoir had lame character design (=P)!! I think lelouch will assume persona named Zero to rescue Suzaku..
Anyways this ANIme BEATS death note by A MILE!!!! Death note got boring after the second Arc! Finished the whole manga in a day tho…stopped the anime after 2nd episode!!
oh the Kar/llen fanservice was good! that scene felt like Light was in Lulu’s shoes. it had that feeling that, Karen could do something, but Lulu, with Light psycho-analysis, would have already known that she had a knife. sadly, I don’t think Lulu is quite on Light or L’s level.
Even so, Code Geass just feels like more, if you know what I mean. >
I do know what you mean, and I agree. Both are equally good, but Death Note is a thick and complex beast; so complicated (like chess). Geass has complexity, but not at the depth of Death note, but perhaps more complex details and circumstances. It really tugs in all directions and has more, character-wise, to account for when weighing out the battle. Its awesome!
This is DEFINITELY THE BEST ANIME OF THE SEASON! Dgrayman loses ou a bit but i still love that show too (:D). Code Geass is good! It has the right balance of everything. Brains, brawn, good, evil, hero, anti-hero, FANSERVICE (if U LOOK PROPERLY YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE part of KALLEN’S……NIPPLE!!!!!! in this episode 3 shower scene) , great story, pontentially in-depth characters, mecha (thogh the bots arent as beautiful as Gundam Seed) , hot chicks (yay Kallen), any MANY MORE!! u NAME IT cODE GEASS HAS IT! tOO COOL! Nuff said!
PS, about the nipple, the screenshot is at Random Curiosity’s Anime Blog!! YAY for Random Curiosity!!!!
I’m really beginning to love this series too! I love Suzaku so much!!! And Lelouch too! The wonderful animation really reflects CLAMP’s character designs really well, too.
