Code Geass – Lelouch of the Rebellion: Episode 23

Rating: 10/10

Impressions:

Fuck yeah, this is what I call REAL entertainment. Ok, maybe I’ve said that before, but it’s an extremely good thing that my favourite Code Geass episode is the most recent one. It wouldn’t look too good if my favourite was episode 1 and somehow the rest of the show fell down a drain and disappeared. This episode was a real surprise, and in different ways to those you might think of. I’m also really sad, pissed, excited and glad that the final two episodes will air in summer (in 3 months?) Sad because I will miss the show; I’m pissed because I have to wait so long; excited because the cliff-hanger ending is just so good; and glad because there IS another two episodes to go.

The surprising thing that I mentioned earlier is how for once, I actually rooted for Suzaku as he was trying to save Euphemmia. Of course, the only reason for that is because I ended up liking her character A LOT due to her major development the past episodes. Apparently, she dies this episode, and spoilers seem to confirm it, though I still have this feeling it might not be true. Her body is still intact, so perhaps she will make some sort of happy comeback next season. I sure hope so, even if the chances are zero. The problem with liking a character that gets killed off is that your overall view of the series might go down. Fortunately, that doesn’t apply to me in this case.

I’ve read a lot of discussion on events that are in this episode, so I guess I should give my take as well. Regarding C.C. talking with Marianne, I believe she is dead. And depending on how people like C.C. come to be, she might be alive and have the power to enlighten others with Geass as well. As for whether Suzaku knows Zero’s true identity or not, I believe he does. V.V. (male) apparently tells him what’s going on, and the way he calls Lelouch with Eupphie’s phone is subtly creepy. I also think Lelouch realises Suzaku knows who his alter ego is, which makes their talk about friends so much more ironic and saddening.

There are quite a few characters that get involved a bit, but aren’t developed enough in my opinion. These include Nina, Orange-kun, Raksharta, Lloyd, Cecile and Viletta. Sure, we see them often and we know a fair bit about them (emo lesbian, emo emo, hot, emo (maybe not) scientist, non-emo, emo-until-memory-loss respectively), but their personalities, habits, likes and dislikes…they’re too down-to-earth and plain. Nina going out to seek revenge is pointless to me, as its highly unlikely she’s going to cause Zero’s demise. And if she does, it would be so messed up, exactly because she isn’t developed enough to be important. Anyway now though, Orange-kun and Viletta might be getting into the fray again…

Overall, this episode not only proves to me how good the series is (with this latest episode, Code Geass surpasses Kanon for me), but it also makes me fear how the second season will measure up. Can it top this first season off? I sure hope so, but there’s big chunk of me doubting that. I also wonder what the next season will be about. Will it go on another path relating to Geass, putting important characters at the moment off screen? Euphie is already down (but I’m hoping she might come back), so what about Suzaku? And of course, the lingering question is how Lelouch can possibly go one with his out of control Geass now (Lelouch better not actually die).

    I cant believe 2 things.
1.We have to wait until summer for the last two episodes.
    2. Code Geass ends. I’m going to have geass withdrawal symptoms.

Danny Choo, well, we’ll just have to wait for the sequel I guess…

I think the second season is going to be more oriented towards character development and answering questions we don’t know, particularly Marianne’s death, her relation (?) with the Geass and C.C. and the whole thing with the Geass in general.

I wished I had started watching this sooner but I’m glad I did.

Lelouche basically said that he doesn’t intend to return to his non-Zero life, so to remedy the out-of-control Geass he just has to wear glasses if ever speaking to someone without his Zero helmet. Surely he is smart enough to figure this out, especially after Mao proved the effectiveness by doing the same.

Great review by the way, I agree with your 10/10!

Lelouch and Suzaku, noooooooo! -pulls at her hair- Dammit, if those two don’t somehow become friends at the end of the series I’m going to kill something. But yes, I agree that Suzaku definitely knows about Lelouch being Zero. Where in the world did V.V. come from? The little brat ruined everything.

I’m not sure if I like Lelouch x C.C. anymore after that whole ‘comforting’ scene. I never a stronger sense of C.C. using Lelouch than at that moment. But I loved how C.C. wanted to protect him when Suzaku came flying in for Euphie.

-wants to go on but is way too caught up on the dead relationship of Lelouch and Suzaku- I’m gonna have to rewatch the series numerous times until the last two episodes air in three months @_@ Can’t…make…it…!

Heh a great ep, I don’t know about it being 10/10 but still nice. Although CG does have a few downfaults it’s been really quality entertainment for most of the time. Although Kanon is still my favorite for the season x.x; I hope the next season is as great as the first, I can’t wait to see how Leluch builds USJ lol

Oh you mean lets see what Sunrise writers is do … dig out of the hole they dug themselves or make a deeper hole.

Perhaps they make more .5 episodes so they can come up with a resemblance of plot during “2nd season”? since I have my doubts of the “quality” of the plot when they cannot even come up with a ending for the 1st season.

    @Drakron:

The .5 episodes are only there to stall for time in terms of animation quality, NOT because they’re having problems in plot-writing. Not having your “proper ending” to the first season also stems from having these recap episodes, since the they couldn’t air the last two episodes having used up all of the airtime for the show.

23’s cliffhanger is actually perfectly fine for being a “season finale” of sorts, since it leaves most of us hungry for more. Hell, up until the spring season started recently I was having anime withdrawal issues about Code Geass ending its TV run.

Doubt it, Sunrise does a lot of series and they would not need a week break for the animation team to caught up, they have the man power for that.

Writing on the other hand cannot be “fixed” by adding more people … that needs time.

Also do not excuse cliffhangers as a season finale, any season needs some resolution even when a second season is in planning … THIS is poor, if you want a excuse how about this?

Code Geass had 25 slots and those .5 taken the slots for episodes 24 and 25.

Of course THAT opens another can of worms, that this series have poor planning (no kidding) and that the TV networks were not going to excuse it and that Sunrise writers could not just cut the story.

But if that is true how about the Island episode? or the School Festival episode? heck in the Island episode had me check if I was not watching Gundam SeeD by accident as the School Festival was screaming “FILLER” even higher.

T.T three months until Code Geass resumes… ah the pain. Does anyone have a general idea of when the second season will start? I heard a rumor that it was going to be in 2 years, but I don’t want to believe it…

Well, I’ve never been this pumped up for mecha combat for like….6 years. If you ask me, I’d say that this anime has way too few episodes. An anime with this much charaters and plot development could easily come up to par with the Gundam series, especially since this has 3 major plotlines (Geass, Order of the black knights Vs Brittiania and their regular lives) as well as the fact that there are only 2 Geass users revealed. Furthermore, C.C’s history has never been fully explained (what’s she doing in china, for starters) and with the appearence of V.V I get this feeling that it’s going to get alot more complicated. Of course, given sunrise’s history of radically changing plot direction in mid-plot we might just as well get something like GSD.

For those grumbling about the three months wait during the episodes, cheer up. It’s Spring!!! There’s a heck load of new animes comming up in a week to fill in the gaps, including Lucky star…

Damn… Figured we’d get a “happy” ending and they pull this… Oh whell. Lots of other series to watch meanwhile. Really interested in seeing how this one turns out.

How do you take screenshots in a media player? There are a couple scenes that I really want to get, but whenever I hit the print screen button & paste it into paint, if I continue watching the episode, the picture in the paint box changes too!! >_> Maybe its just my retarded computer that does this, but…

@ Dude, this is because you have turned on your video acceleration. If you turn it off, using the print screen function should work.
