CLANNAD: Episode 17

Rating: 8.7/10

Impressions:

I’ve got a LOT of homework today, so it’s very surprising that I’m even blogging this (and even more surprising as I’m planning to blog True Tears after, but that may change). Anyway, I have to say I’m loving Clannad right now. Mainly because they’re employing the use of common harem matters into the show, but actually animating it well and using characters we’re already used to, but in a non-harem way. What’s more, we get more Tomoyo and Kyou time, as it seems like KyoAni are merging the two arcs into one. I love Tomoyo’s random appearances, and the sports storage room scene is just gold.

For the moment, I find Tomoyo the more interesting character. I still like Kyou the best, but her actions in the PE room have essentially disqualified her from the ‘finals’. It makes it seem like they’re just going to make more jokes about her and Tomoya, whereas it’s strongly hinted that there would be a more serious relationship between the two when Kyou first asks about whether Tomoya was dating someone. But I have to wonder, when is Ryou going to come into all of this? While neither Tomoyo nor Kyou really have any chance with Tomoya, at least they’re getting screen time with him. Ryou is just…way too ‘down there’ to have any hope of getting back up.

Must say i loved this episode, gotta love Kyous reaction in the PE room aswell.

As for the finals Nagisa will probably take that gold, tho i would personaly prefer Tomoyo or Kyou.

I hate the fact that KyoAni is merging the 2 arcs together..
Since they deserve to have more..

Yea, it seems like Ryou isn’t even trying to win Tomoya..
And her sister is the one who does most of the work..

Hmm, I actually like the merging of the arc. Although it’s kind of messy, it makes things go faster and lead to more tension. And in the middle of all this, all Tomoya can think about is Nagisa, who is bed-ridden after undergoing so much stress. But Tomoyo’s appearances are making up for the more seemingly annoying-Kyou. I don’t really like Kyou as much anymore but she still has that tsundere appeal (Kagami anyone?).

Overall, very good episode and it keeps getting better. Clannad bests Kanon by far and maybe, maybe Air by a hair.

And am I the only one wondering why Kotomi has such a teeny role in the series? It’s pretty much the same thing as disappearing (unlike Fuko… o.O ). At least have Tomoya visit her or talk to her more… but I guess with a limited time frame (7 episodes left!), there isn’t time to let her hog even 3 minutes of friendly banter. Kotomi only gets 2 or 3 lines at best and that’s usually a side comment.

Eh, I guess I am overanalyzing it.

Yes, I didn’t expect CLANNAD to be this good after to fell so easily into the single-character arc format. Blowing that up may have been the best thing this show could have done, and its actually reminding me a bit of ef now given all the character intersection.

@Shin Hey it could be alot worse, like in Air/Kanon where they just make the finished girl dissappear. Her problems were solved pretty nicely and she sticks with them as part of the gang, they could have sent her to America lol.

Oh yeah I recently picked up an english version of Clannad, and went straight for Tomoyo’s route her being my favorite character. It’s very very awesome, but the ending is sort of lacking.(That’s where Tomoyo After kicks in) After reading it I’ll have to admit that I think Tomoya x Nagisa is the best heh, although as a character I still like Tomoyo more, her interactions with Tomoya in the game where very cute.

Tomoya’s personality in the game contrasts greatly from what we see in the anime though. He’s a total complete delinquent (Atleast from what I’ve seen in Tomoyo’s route) that skips class, comes late, sleeps in class, threatens teachers, threatens to beat kids up/intimidates them, and is REALLY mean to Sunohara lol.

Furuba: unfortunately, yes its very true… sigh, good luck with yours as well

Anonymous: overly exaggerated but plenty of funnies =D

Setsukyie: altho i agree they shud have more time, i really like the merging of the arcs as it gives each episode a lot more substance

Shin: well, its quite natural for a girl to become extremely minor or nonexistent after the completion of her arc, as seen in Air and kanon

JasonP: ef was never a funny series, or one meant to be funny anyway, so i cant really see any connection between ef and clannad, while i admit both are really good

FlameStrike: personally, i dont like tomoya’s personality that much. i prefer the somewhat more distant and colder yukito from Air

Oh, I just meant in the intersecting character stories way, not in the tone or feel. Yea, they are quite different shows in many ways.

@shin: lol don’t we all love tsundere? :3

Anyway, I can’t believe how much I laughed watching this ep. Though no major developments have happened yet. So meh. :/
