CLANNAD: Episode 14

Rating: 8/10

Impressions:

I’m sorry for neglecting Clannad until now, since I really have more desire to blog other shows than this, even though it IS a good show. Anyway, this episode concludes Kotomi’s arc, and does a really good job of it. The importance of friends and family that is emphasised in this episode, as well as the nice, final wrap-up with the teddy bear, all create an excellent and satisfying conclusion to Kotomi’s story. But the problem is, it’s not exactly unpredictable. I really liked Fuko’s ark due to the charm of her character and the uniqueness of her story. While Kotomi’s arc is more tear-up-welling, I have to say I didn’t really like Kotomi at all. Which explains the lower than usual score. =/

The next episode…I have no idea what it’s about. It doesn’t seem to have a clear indication of which character the next arc will entail. This is actually a good thing for me, since I’ve longed for a KyoAni/Key series that doesn’t just run through a set of arcs for it’s plot material. I always love merging of plots and parallel subplots, even though this type of show wouldn’t do too well with something like that. But regardless of all that, I really want to see Kyou’s arc, since she seems to have feelings for Tomoya, which would likely end up being the romance-drama that I have yet to see in a KyoAni/Key work. I also love her character anyway.

I was a pretty good arc, however Clannad seems to be lacking some of the unique charm of Key. Furthermore, this is a harem anime (Don’t quote me on this, I’m just under that impression) and yet the girl protagonists of the last two arcs seem romantically unattached. It looks like strong friendship, but not love. Maybe my expectation were too high because of its predeccesor, Kanon.

I still like the series though, and am not totally disappointed with it.

Am I the only one here that like Clannad more than Kanon?? Don’t give me wrong. I still love Kanon a lot. It’s just that the humor in Kanon was less funny then Clannad IMO. Also, in Kanon, the only character that I felt attach to was Mai while the other characters were OK. However, I really enjoy watch every single character and how each character interacting in Clannad more than in Kanon. That’s why I really like this episode, I cried (yeah, I admitted). Well, probably same thing when I watched the ending of Fuko’s arc too. The only arc in Kanon that almost gave the same feeling as Kotomi and Fuko’arc was once again Mai. Overall, even now, I’m not disappointed in Clannad at all.

Well, Danny. To answer your question for next episode. I don’t want to spoil you, but let just say that next episode is kinda random. It also kinda like mix a lot of characters’arc into one episode but they still focus mostly in Nagisa and Tomoya. So I guess it seems like that what something may you are looking forward to (I guess).

I’m likeing Clannad a bit more than Kanon because I like the characters in Clannad a bit more than the ones in Kanon, also Clannad’s humor is better too. Clannad isn’t all about tear induceing drama and sad girls in whatever season. Out of the Kanon girls, Mai was hands down my favorite, she’d get a 12/10 while Nayuki is 9/10. In Clannad I’m having a harder time decideding which one to up in the top spot since I like them all.

@ Lo’ I don’t know why the lack of romantic attachment from Kotomi and Fuko dissapoints you so much, I’m rather tired of the usual a bunch of girls fall in love with one guy for no reason and he has to choose formula. Clannad’s less obvious with the harem thing unlike say, H20 which throws it in your face.

Lo’: clannad WOULD be a harem, but kyoani made it so that its not.

kenshin514: yeah i like clannad more than kanon as well, but i have to see the ending first (i hated kanon’s ending…)

FlameStrike: for kanon, nayuki was my fave. for clannad, it would have to be kyou (and then maybe tomoyo)
