CLANNAD: Episode 13

Rating: 7.5/10

Impressions:

For some odd reason, this episode didn’t appeal to me nearly as much as what Clannad usually does. I’m beginning to think that the Key game adaptations have gone on long enough, and now, KyoAni’s just pushing it. For me, everything is simply far too repetitive. The sad back-stories, the group collaboration, the male lead that’s always the same—hopefully, this will be the last Key game anime adaptation that they do. Unless they can offer something new and interesting. I can’t help but think that this show is exactly like Kanon. Pacing is also a severe problem in my books, as everything is being dragged out excessively, making the episodes rather dull and boring.

I know I sound harsh, but I’m not bashing the show from a critic’s point of view. I still like it, and thankfully, it seems like the next episode will be the last of Kotomi’s arc, but I really don’t want to see another Kanon/Clannad/Air clone soon. If anything, I think that there a lot of people who only claim the show is good is because it is similar to Kanon, or due to the fact that it’s being animated by KyoAni. Expectedly, Kotomi’s story did not sadden me, nor surprise me. It’s quite obvious there would be some drama behind each girl, and I’ve seen enough to expect worse. It seems as if KyoAni is just having fun at telling sad stories now.

Oh and if anyone’s wondering about the lower-than-usual score, it’s because Kotomi’s story is too generic. The expression of hatred towards a loved one just before some tragic accident has been used so many times…it became old long ago.

I kinda had the same feeling this episode but my thoughts were more on the line that I’v watched to much of the new serie’s.

So that I had to get used to clannad pacing/art again…

Same here. I still like the series but Kotomis arc is a little bit boring in comparison to Fuu-chans arc. I’m looking forward to some more TomoyaNagisa relationship development.

When I watched it with my buddy John I tried to think up alternate titles for the series:

    Fix-a-friend
    Broken girls
    I need some normal friends

and so on, all in the spirit of humor. This episode does drag. Really, nothing even happens over the course of it. It feels like filler, and that is a big disappointment in a series that is generally so good. It kind of reminds me of just how horrible the low-budget art was towards the end of Higurashi no naku koro ni kai. I was like WTF!? If you are going to do something, do it right. Ok, I’ll stop before I begin ranting…

    I hope what you’re saying doesn’t come true =)
KyoAni still needs to animate Little Busters, something which I’m hoping for a lot right now. The game is phenomenal (although it’s so hard to play with just AGTH and Atlas >.>)

As for Planetarian, I haven’t looked into it yet, so that can go any way for all I care…

I think that CLANNAD is Kanon done right. But, unfortunately, it came out later and so it seems a rehash of the same topics.
In Kanon, Yuiichi’s amnesia was used damn too many times (Ayu, Mai, Makoto) and they never explained why he should have forgotten them all. In comparison, Tomoya having forgotten a childhood friend who he had known for a few days seems much more believable.

You raise some vaild points, this is also the first episode I haven’t bothered to watch twice, although midterms have something to do with that as well. Tomoya and Yuuichi aren’t that similar, although they both have the help girls they find part the execution is diffrent. I agree with you one the drama though, it was a bit generic and overused, I was going on OMG KOTOMI MOEEE to carry me through this arc but it’s starting to lose effect. (3 weeks is a looonngg time) Well, I have faith in KyoAni and so far it’s still my favorite show this season. I haven’t been bothered by the pace though.
