Impressions:

Wow, this episode turned out to be a lot more than I expected. I was completely prepared for the kind of beginning which Air and Kanon take, which is pretty slow and usually quite ‘normal’ in terms of characters. However, Clannad brings with it, a very fast start with extremities in the animation already (I personally love the spectators’ view of Tomoyo pwning the bikers in less than a second). The sudden time skips that take place with the voice-overs happening simultaneously are really effective in creating the sort of ‘mystical life’ atmosphere which the past two Key creations reek of. It might be confusing at first, but I’m sure it would be easy to adjust to.

Another point: upon seeing Nagisa, who looks somewhat like Ayu, I immediately began assuming that all the characters would be replicas of another Air or Kanon character. However, in the end, there aren’t really any such characters who remind me much of another Key creation—thankfully. I also find Nagisa to be much more likeable than both Ayu and Misuzu. Already, with the other two Key+KyoAni creations interfering with my current thought processes, I’m beginning to wonder whether Clannad will take a minagoroshi ending like Air (where everyone dies—almost), or a overly happy ending like Kanon, where everyone is saved by some miracle called TV storywriters.

Personally, I like Air’s ending A LOT better. Of course, Clannad doesn’t have to take either option. It’s too early for me to come up with any ideas, but if anything, I certainly don’t want a ‘perfect’ ending like Kanon (which I hardly think was perfect). For now though, anyway, the impressions I got from this first episode, coupled with my general experiences with KyoAni works, I can tell this is going to be one of my favourites this season. Shana will probably still come out on top for me, as it’s my 5th favourite anime series (mostly due to Shana herself). Gundam 00, Dragonaut, ef and some others might be contenders as well. I wonder what else I should blog…

Dango, dango, dango, dango, dango daikazoku… ^-^

I especially liked the BGM at the beginning of this episode together with the first encounter between Nagisa and Tomoya.

    Nightseer: another dango follower! xD

Sunohara!: i am well aware of the technical aspects of the show. Anyone who has seen other KyoAni works, especially Kanon or Air, will expect a fantastic show. Still, I reckon Kanon’s quality is higher

Clannad and Myself, Yourself are so far my two favorite shows of the new season. Clannad has so far not disappointed me so far, but i would have to agree that Kanon is still better than Clannad, atleast so far.

What you give this episode only 8.2/10. I watched up to fourth one right now and I give 10/10 for all the them. Kanon was my third favorite anime and it was superb series, but Clannad might be able to top Kanon. It’s still too early to tell.

Hm yeah I was kind of surprised with the 8.2 heh. So far Clannad definatly lives up the my expectations, I like the first ep of Clannad a bit more then the first ep of Kanon, but since it’s still so eairly I’m not going to judge which is better overall. However, so far Clannad keeps getting better and better with each episode. The pace is faster than what I’ve seen with Kanon so far.

@Kenshin: Well I’ll tell you something about this, I knew Danny would like it and go beyond his expectations but honestly giving a show 10/10 is not a piece of cake. The only ones that can get something like that has to be touching and have amazing quality ALA Byousoku 5 Centimetres. Kyoto Animation always brings out the best of its studio and personally I think after a few more eps it would make Danny realize how good this show will get. Because honestly I’ve watched the 4th episode and I’m at a point where I want to desperately see episode 5. 4 was hilariously funny yet at the end get serious which gives a nice combination to the human emotions and not something depressing.

@Jason Isenberg; Well, come to think of it, I probably give like 9 for each episode so far. I know that Danny won’t give it 10/10 any series easily. I am Kyoani fanboy. That’s why I preassume that this series is gonna be great (kinda like love at first sight). Then again, you’re right. There is still a lot more episodes to go.

Personally, I’m hoping this show will be another emotional rollercoaster that will have me watching it again and again, sharing it with buddies of mine and watching yet again :D
Most of my anime-watching friends do not understand my taste in shows, but oh well. I convince them if I can, and this will be one I try to spread around!

Quikbeam: Hmm, i watched myself; yourself, but it doesn’t appeal to me that much. Maybe it gets a lot better…

kenshin514: well, don’t compare these ratings with the ones i used for Kanon. Remember my rating scheme change? the change prevents me from giving things more than a 9 very easily.

Flamestrike: i have to say I like Clannad more than Kanon. So far.

that one odd dude: if its an emotional rollercoaster you want, im pretty sure you’ll get it =)
