Negima!? Episode 9

Firstly in other news, I have decided to read the Negima! manga and am currently up to volume 5. I will definitely have caught up to the latest chapter by the next episode. Now I just wish there was a proper anime adaptation that follows the manga like a typical action shounen, or at least a proper series that doesn’t stray from the original storyline. Negima!? is an exception though, since it obviously isn’t following the original storyline. Still though, it is amazingly fun to watch. I am still in love with Konoka, and reading the manga has made it even stronger. The only downside to Negima!? is that there is like no character development at all. That’s ok though, as this remake never had that intention in the first place, and is doing a whole bunch of other random stuff to make up for it. For example, the random shots of Ayaka’s hot body, or Evangeline and Chachamaru having tea with the two animal guys. Or that dormitory exploding, which looked very much like a real life model. Not as funny as some of the other episodes, but I still got a few good laughs from it.

Another awesome, hilarious, cute and completely random episode! So if you weren’t disturbed by the disgustingly funny close-ups of Negima, Nodoka, the dog and the cat, as well as the medium shot of Asuna, you should’ve had a wonderful time appreciating the hilarity of this episode. Actually no, the random close-ups definitely add to the humour, and it’s wonderful seeing Negima!? pulling out new tricks from its sleeve each time. The twins are super cute, especially when they’re ‘converging’ on Negima to get his kiss, and that would’ve made any lolicon his day. Apparently the twins aren’t meant to become Negima’s partners, though anyone who hasn’t seen Mahou Sensei Negima or read the manga would think immediately that they would get their pactio from the title, which was something like ‘turn us into adults’. Bah, can’t remember lol. Though really, anyone would fanboy over this. God I love this show…*sighs* Oh yeah in other, unrelated news, HAYATE THE COMBAT BUTLER is getting an ANIME! OMG that’s awesome! Expect a real post up tomorrow!

Yes, Negima!? is now my top priority because it is currently my favourite show of this season. Why then, you ask, are my scores for Negima!? lower than shows like Code Geass, Kanon and Asatte no Houkou? I really don’t know, but it’s most likely that I can’t be stuffed going back and changing the scores right now. This switch in preferences happened rather suddenly though. I haven’t been thinking about which show is my favourite lately, and the last time I thought about this, it meant Kanon > Code Geass > Death Note. So then one day (namely today) I stopped and thought about this topic again…and realised Negima!? had just exceeded all the other anime! *Shock!* I must comment on this show’s randomness; it’s freakin’ awesome! The Baka Rangers, Chupacabra, ‘cameraman’ speaking, sudden switches to overhead-gameboy-RPG style, whacky alter-egos and so on. Nothing is more entertaining that this. I was debating over whether to do this post in place of Bleach 107, and I also considered merging this post with Negima!? 08, but both ideas went down the drain because of no reason at all. I don’t know why I told you that in the first place. It was probably just to fill space.

Negima!? never ceases to amaze me with its hilarity and magical battle scenes. I’m still obsessing over Konoka’s kawaii-ness though xD She’s not as cute this episode, though we do get to see her rare card abilty, which is something I can’t really describe. She’s also pretty slick with seductive abilities, especially since she’s realised Setsuna’s affection for her. The indirect kiss mental ordeal for Setsuna brought wonders. Needless to say, this show is magnificent, with the cute girls, awesome comedy and, proven by this episode, high quality fight scenes. Setsuna seems a bit overpowered though, and it’s a shame Konoka didn’t kick more butt than she did. Chisame also brings up her internet idol fixation whilst still under the fairy’s spell. The way she and Nodoka handles it is hilarious, and even though it’s during a highly important, first ‘real’ battle, it fits in perfectly with the general feel Negima!? has set up. I’m extremely impressed with the sharpness that remains with this show as well. Too bad there aren’t many signature transition-less scenes.

Another awesome episode of Negima!? I really do love this show now. Surprisingly though, I kind of forgot about it until…now. If you look to my previous post, you’ll see it’s a month before this one. I don’t know how I just suddenly stopped and didn’t think twice; this show is great! Main attractions are the harem and the comedy. For me though, it’s also the unique style, featuring quick, repetitive frame transitions and the multiple sliding screens. As for the harem, all the girls are super cute, though my favourite would have to be Konoka aka Ojou-sama (from Setsuna). She’s incredibly playful, sweet at times, cute and somewhat dense like all the other girls (except Setsuna). A close second would probably be Chiu, the alter ego of Chisame. Her internet idol business is sweet. It’s just another random extra Negima!? loves to throw in for extra content and comedy. Nodoka’s mind-reading is also hilarious, as well as the chupacabura hunt, while Setsuna and Konoka development is touching. Well, I’ve already listed a variety of emotions that I have gotten from this show, though there is still something missing; action. Hopefully, there will be some next episode.

So it seems this episode is an original, not based on the manga. Since I haven’t read the manga, I can’t compare this episode with anything apart from previous episodes, so I have to say it’s pretty good. The last episode had some awesome action in it, but this episode spends more time developing new characters, with a bit of comedy as well. Quite a few people have been saying Nodoka is cute and such, and I agree. I usually like the main female character better, and I’d say Asuna is more ‘main’ than anyone else right now. However, there are some exceptions to this. Anyway, the kiss scene was cute and funny, but THAT’s all. Once again NO satisfaction came from that *sigh* I sooo wish Negima was older, and I’m sounding like a whiny 8-year-old…Aside from that though, I really like the animation style. The constant switching of shot types and angles is really cool, as well as the slideshow thing. Not to mention the action is pretty good too, but Negima spends too much time running away. I wouldn’t mind seeing more of his partners’ transformations, but the magic blasts are much cooler. By the way, I’m having exams this week which is why my posts are rather short with no summary.

So i finally got round to watching episode 3 of Negima!?, even though episode 4 is already out. So far it’s been pretty enjoyable, except for two things which downgrade the enjoyment for me. The first one is constant: Negima’s age. He is TOOOO young! He made the kiss scene completely unsatisfying. Kiss/hug/sex scenes are not meant to be UNSATISFYING goddammit! And the second thing: Asuna transformed! Argh what the hell she can’t transform like that! She’s just turned the anime into a complicated mahou shoujo anime with a much younger viewing audience! Okay, so I don’t really think that, but her changing like that really disappointed me. I was hoping for a more serious magic approach, which the show has achieved perfectly except for that. At least as a consolation, she was carrying a giant axe around instead of a wand with wings or something. Both Negima and Evangeline obviously use much cooler magic blasts and whatever, so that makes up for it. And I still don’t get what the whole partner contract thing does. It doesn’t seem like Asuna got a lot stronger since she could already throw a FRIGGIN BOAT INTO THE AIR! That’s another WTF for me. Seriously, I need an explanation, and if there’s already been one, I’ve obviously missed it.

Okay, okay, I get why everyone likes this show so much, mainly because I too have fallen in love with it. This is probably because not as much time was spent in the classroom, which I still think kinda sucks because of all the shortcuts taken. I want a bit more diversity when it comes to shot types and angles! Apart from that though, we got more movement in terms of plot with new twists and revelations. I am quite pleased with the series now and I can’t wait to see where it’s going. What’s all this about Negima finding a partner? I know in the original Negima!, Asuna becomes a big part of his life, so they probably will become ‘partners’, but with a kiss? Why does it always have to be a kiss?? Never mind though, as in terms of ecchi-ness and fanservice, Negima!? has been keeping in to almost practically non-existent so I’m happy about that. I’ve heard that was one of the reasons why the original can’t compare with this remake/retelling (I’m still not sure as to what it is, but it doesn’t matter to me as I never saw the original anyway).
