Nagasarete Airantou: Episode 15

Rating: 7/10
Impressions:
This episode feels a bit pointless to me, though at least it retrieves Mei Mei from her state of extreme timidness, which was kinda annoying. The anime has finally gotten to the end of the manga which has been scanlated up to (from the last time I’ve checked), and surprisingly, that’s only about chapter 24. And to think, the manga has ten volumes currently and is still ongoing, although the anime has reached basically nothing. They really should get some development going, instead of random comedy shorts that don’t take the relationships anywhere. At this rate, there’ll probably be a sequel…or two.

Finally, Nagasarete Airantou has moved on to a continuous arc, even though it still isn’t very long itself. This episode covers two chapters of the manga, but unfortunately there’s only one more chapter about Mei Mei to cover. They did change a few things around, one of which (unfortunately) occurs during Ikuto’s steak out. Prior to Toono’s first appearance as a thief, Machi actually tries to steal something, and Ikuto catches her. The two wind up in an awkward position, getting Suzu mad with jealousy. Ahh…that would have at least made for some Suzu development, and showed us that she does care about Ikuto slightly more than as a friend…

Character-development wise, this is a pretty good episode as it gives some more background and personality to both Suzu and Ikuto. I have to say Ikuto’s sister is cuter than most of the girls on the island, and no it’s not just that seifuku that’s getting to me. Usually in an episode of Nagsarete Airantou, misunderstandings usually result in humour (as does in many comedies, especially School Rumble). However, this episode shows a more serious side of the show and actually uses this misunderstanding to further the relationship between Suzu and Ikuto especially (something which I am all for).

Machi is my favourite character purely because of her hilarious personality. She can actually be pretty adorable as well, like in this episode when Ikuto compliments her cooking. It being edible is uproarious at the least, as well all know Machi is basically a failure at anything related to being a normal person xD. Her looks and height also make her seem very young, though she’s certainly not a loli-looking character. The actual episode itself is alright—not the best, though with Machi as the central character, it couldn’t go wrong! It goes to show that a favourite character can turn a decent episode into a highly enjoyable one, as did this.

I always love it when new characters are introduced, and Yukino’s mother is especially entertaining, being the shocking loli-looking teen that she is. I can’t even remember seeing her in the manga, or if she’s appeared yet at all (or she might even be an anime-only character, though I’m pretty sure I read something along the lines of this episode some time ago). Apparently, all the guys died 13 years ago or something right? This means Yukino can’t be far off from that age, so I wonder how old Yukino’s mother was when she gave birth to her. Apart from her, we got some well needed Machi appearance as well, though it’s still not nearly enough.

This is unsurprisingly one of my favourite episodes so far. I had been impressed by the character development that this part of the story contains when I read the manga, and am equally impressed that the producers managed to make a good story out of it. Of course, some things were changed as usual, but the general point of the story is easily maintained. It’s pretty nice to see Suzu surrounded by all her friends, especially as she expresses quite a bit of loneliness unintentionally. She must be appreciating Ikuto’s company a lot at the moment, even if she has yet to develop any romantic feelings for him.

Finally, Suzu has started to show some interest in Ikuto by growing unknowingly jealous of Rin. In the manga, Suzu’s feelings don’t actually develop much, but the anime might skip some chapters and mix them around to further strengthen the relationship between Ikuto and Suzu. I hope Suzu starts taking proper action some time soon, though I highly doubt Ikuto will be with anyone at the end of the series. It’s disappointing that the anime excludes the last event in the manga, where Suzu actually throws something at Ikuto for getting too close to Rin. It would have emphasised her jealousy, but I guess it’s not that important.

The amount of censoring made the episode lacking, though it’s still quite enjoyable. Chikage’s insanity when it comes to these things makes her one of my favourite characters. She’s also surprisingly cute when she realises she is a normal girl and does take a liking to guys. Hmm, it seems like it’s the crazy characters that get my liking, as Chikage and Machi are probably the craziest among the Airantou characters. I hope there will be more characters with such abnormal personalities like them, even if they are generic, as it’s things like this that make the show hilariously entertaining.
