I found myself really enjoying this episode when I watched it, probably due to the nice and cheerful feel it has. Not only does it develop the characters of Alto and the others, it also makes the sci-fi setting a lot firmer. This is done through the well incorporated display of the more advanced technology that is employed by Frontier. Being a sci-fi fan, this in particular made the episode an excellent watch for me. Of course, it also generates a lot of hints for possible future events, such as more response by the aliens to Ranka’s voice, as well as the attack received by Sheryll’s home fleet. Now to watch the next episode…

However, the semi-cliffhanger ending certain does a good job of eliminating that problem. I still haven’t seen the following few episodes, but I’ll be sure to get to them soon. One surprise for me was seeing the giant of a woman (can’t remember names…) turn into a loli character. Not just because it’s amusing in itself, but more likely due to the fact that such an outrageous thing was included in a rather serious show…but I guess it’s all in good fun.

I guess it just feels rather bland in comparison to the previous two episodes. Right now, Code Geass is better, but still, the high tech, epic feel of Macross F is quite awing. The problem is, I’m finding the story somewhat generic, which isn’t doing the show such a good favour. However, the high significance that is played on idols and music is quite endearing. There’s also a bit of a quality drop in this episode, but that doesn’t matter as much.

Sorry for this rather late post, I’ll try to keep more up to date with this show in the future. With that said, I must say, I haven’t really seen much this season, so it’s likely that I won’t blog anything apart from this and Code Geass. There’s also Bleach, and some time in the future I hope to resume my D.Gray-man and Naruto blogging. One reason, aside from my busier schedule these days, for my lack of blogging, is my lack of interest in a number of the new shows this season. It’s quite sad but hardly anything is being subbed speedily as well, which puts me off trying to follow them as well.

Anyway, episode 2 of Macross Frontier certainly blew me away, moreso than Code Geass did. I mean, I had partially forgotten what the first episode is like until I watched this…and everything came rushing back. The CG is fairly well done, and the animation looks like it’s from a movie. I also love the micro inspection on the various characters, unlike a series like Gundam 00. It also gives a tremendously nice sci-fi feel to it, and I get Evangelion vibes from watching the show. I just hope that the quality and story remains at an excellent level. I think you’d be able to tell, but for me right now, Macross F > CG R2.

It’s nice to see that Alto isn’t presented as another mecha main character who easily winds up in a mecha, as evidently, he’s not allowed to. Not only that, he throws up after seeing the destruction of the city, signifying a more realistic character than the almighty never-scared-of-anything shounen protagonist. This is probably why I’m a Shinji-supporter, and not a Shinji-hater haha. I always liked him more than his father anyway. But in this case, hopefully I won’t have to hate on a character (Code Geass has Suzaku…). I’m also really interested in the idol/song element in this, partly because the songs are quite good in my opinion.

Wow, I haven’t seen a Macross series before, so I’m pretty stunned. I’m sure you can’t compare old series with new ones in terms of production value, but it looks to me like the Macross series had always been a step above the rest. If I were to compare this with Gunda,, or more specifically, the first episode of Gundam 00, Macross Frontier wins hands down. From the quality (awesome 3D too) to the execution, this episode feels exactly like a movie—the jumpiness, lack of explanations, scene-shifting and the ‘verge-of-disaster’ feeling you get are all employed by movies. Explanations come later, when the initial excitement is over. Well that’s what I felt from watching this episode.

Set as a sequel to Macross 7 and the OAV, Macross F follows a different colony ship, and expectedly, a new set of characters. For starters, the main character seemed to be the typical ‘rival’ character in many shows, but it turned out that he’ll be the star of things (if I’m not mistaken). The girl seems to have quite a fun and easy going personality, so nothing to complain about that. On the hand, the pop singer, Sheryl, bothers me with her attitude (and the fact that she’s famous…is this really an anime??) As I haven’t seen the previous Macross seasons, I would have no idea, but from what I’ve read, it seems that song idols like her are an important part to the show…Hm.

Well anyway, I believe this show starts for real in spring 2008 (which should be somewhere around April). First episodes always manage to fool me, so I’m not going to explain any expectations I have, but I’ll be sure to check out the second episode. Code Geass’s sequel also begins at that time, but in actual fact, I’m not that eager to see it. The new character will surely be interesting, and I can imagine some family grief if he and Lelouch ever meet (if he’s alive I guess), but personally, I wanted to see Lelouch keep his role as lead. Oh well, hopefully the sequel will be just as good as the first season anyway. Btw, please vote in the poll to the right!! xD
