Bleach: Episode 162

Sorry for the lack of posts, I’ve had the ‘can’t be bothered’ mood for a while now. I’ll try and get more posts up tomorrow. Anyway, Bleach 162, an episode that is actually above my expectations. Nice. But then again, my expectations have been rather low for a while now. I’m not saying the last few episodes were bad either, but this is Ichigo we’re talking about, the guy that grabbed me and hooked me into watching the show. It’s so nice watching him fight…but too bad he got owned pretty easily. And regardless of any upcoming events, he seriously should be dead. He was like…stabbed in the heart…

Ichigo must have quite the confidence if he’s willing to sacrifice some time in fighting Ulquiorra before finding Rukia. Perhaps he thinks that he’ll be able to dispatch the number x espada in a second like he did with that former espada who he fought a while ago. Or maybe he’s just conveniently forgotten about Rukia’s dying reiatsu for the sake of continuing the story and beginning a new battle. The last few scenes of this episode are really well animated in my opinion, and it gets me highly excited for the battle that will come. I just hope the quality keeps up from now.

(Comp is finally fixed)~Quite a touching episode, and although it feels a bit slow, it’s not lacking in material at all in my opinion. The usual sense of sluggishness comes from extended periods of showing the same movement over and over again, while repeating lines and random shots of random things. If you’ve seen Naruto, you know what I mean. But for this episode of Bleach, the slowness really makes the whole Rukia x Kaien relationship all the more powerful. I can’t even remember if Rukia’s situation has been resolved in the manga or not, as the anime is quite close to catching up.

Noitra mentions how he’s the strongest espada…but that’s not exactly true. He’s just expressing what he wishes to be, if I’m not mistaken. Overall, disregarding the comedy scenes, this episode is actually quite serious (I just love the scene with Inoue and Ulquiorra). Nnoitra’s display or strength, as well as Szayel, who manages to crush Renji’s bankai in an instant, both prove the might of the espada, which really gets me excited, as this is exactly how it felt when Ichigo and the others first came up against the Captains of Soul Society. The real battles start now, with the espadas appearing one by one.

This episode isn’t half bad…but I can’t help but cringe at Chad when he starts talking about the ‘true form’ or ‘true power’ of his arms. It’s so shounen-like it’s somewhat sickening. How the hell is someone meant to even know the ‘true form’ of their power? It’s simply ridiculous. And man, I’m really not impressed with his new skills—when it comes to the real thing, he doesn’t really even match up to a captain. There’s still the question of what the heck his powers are. Please don’t tell me their just a personal manifestation of an abundance of reiatsu in a normal human…like Orihime…sigh.

This episode isn’t quite so bad, but it annoys me personally since I really don’t like either of the two heroes in this episode (Ishida and Chad). Their weapons are far too unrealistic in this world of swords and death gods, while they’re also just way too weak to stand up to the real espadas. One singular hero that stands out above the rest is really the only thing I like in these kinds of animes, so creating taskforces with weak small fries such as an over-used vice captain and arrancar that are supposed to be funny but aren’t. I do approve of Nell though, since she’s an ideal female addition to the cast (or WILL be once she actually ‘appears’).

I think it’s quite obvious but this episode is totally shit. A few months ago, if I saw an episode like this, I would still give it a decent score, make some compliments about it and whatnot, but now I’m just quite fed up with anything sub-par (and this episode is a lot more than just sub-par). Aside from the absurdity of the existence of some massive room with nothing but large poles (which always annoys me), the animation is downright horrible, while the execution is pretty low as well. The talk is supposed to be funny, I can understand, but it definitely doesn’t suit a fight that’s supposed to be serious.

Surprisingly, this episode is nicely done despite still being about Rukia and Arara the 9th espada. The fight scenes are handled really well, while art quality doesn’t drop either. But then again, the episode is still stretched out (but the nice fighting makes up for it). This episode covers around 2 chapters of manga again, and is technically a ‘boss battle’, since the enemy is an Espada. But let’s not forget, number 9 is only slightly stronger than number 10 (Yami), who is exceptionally weak and can be pummelled by Yoruichi without a weapon at all! Still, this is Rukia we’re talking about…I can’t wait until episode 158 though (Chad’s time to shine).
