CLANNAD: Episode 7

It looks like things are finally coming to a close, though there’s still the issue of the wedding ceremony (which might actually not happen if everyone starts forgetting about it), as well as Fuko’s and Ibuki-sensei’s sentiments. This episode proves to be quite emotional, with the revelation that Fuko will most likely never wake up. I wonder if they’re gonna pull the plug on her or something. I certainly don’t believe that in a show like this, miracles can’t happen, so I guess I’ll just have to wait and see. Personally, I would prefer for a bitter sweet ending, one where one party is happy, which results in the grief of another, which basically says that Fuko dies, but leaves off in a good way.

It’s pretty sad how Ibuki-sensei can’t see Fuka, though I’m sure it’s something that everyone would’ve expected to be a given. This at least means that the story is getting a move on, and I don’t know why, but I’m finding Clannad’s pacing to be much quicker compared to Kanon. I guess this comes down to how much substance there is in the show, and much of Clannad’s is its comedy, which comes in hordes. It just loves to throw comedy and deep, story-related material one after another, disregarding any mixed feelings viewers might have. Which is uber win for me! xD Kanon was probably too gentle I guess. Air, on the other hand, was nice and short.

I guess all signs point to Fuka being the focus of this first arc. The ghost-replacing-person-in-coma story isn’t the first we’ve seen, but can still be fairly interesting if you let your emotions sway from it. I wonder if it will have a happy or sad ending. Making Fuka ‘disappear’ would be the logical thing to do, but you never know, she might return with her real self (well, that is, if you haven’t seen the latest few episodes lol). Aside from her, I wonder if Tomoya will actually get together with Nagisa, which this episode actually brings to attention. In Air and Kanon, nothing of the sort happens (and even hinting is rare), but it would be nice to see such a drastic change.

Due to my failing in keeping up to date with anime, I don’t know about the general consensus of how Clannad’s doing, but so far IMO, it’s pretty darn good. While I’m not lusting over it like I do with Shakugan no Shana, the classic but amplified Kanon-esque comedy is hella entertaining. I’m liking Tomoyo more now, while the craziness behind her strength has yet to put me off. It just makes me think, if KyoAni does another Key piece, will it be even more whacked up than this? In any case, I need to catch up quick. Hopefully I can do so with the new shows in a week or so.

I want to see more of both Tomoyo’s and Nagisa’s pasts, though it looks like the show is focusing on Nagisa’s drama club for now. I wonder if the importance of the drama club comes in the form of the medium from which the story will gather all the main characters into one setting. Any actual performances will probably just be side shows, but I can imagine the kind of relationships that can form if everyone’s working together in the same club. The next episode’s title is about making friends, which I assume will be about Nagisa’s drama club again.

I wonder if KyoAni will give Tomoya time with each girl, like they did with Kanon (and Air, but less noticeable due to the number of episodes). So far, Tomoya’s relationship with Nagisa has developed speedily and firmly, though he also has a clear foothold on the other girls as well. Probably because of this, it feels like Clannad has been moving amazingly quickly over the first two episodes. The humour is awesome, but not excessive like most comedies (I shouldn’t use the word excessive, since humour is a good thing hehe). The hit combo and air time is priceless.

Apparently Kyoto has picked up another anime to do, and this one is CLANNAD. Like Air and Kanon, it is a Key game adaptation, and like Air, there is a movie by Toei. Frankly, I think Toei sucks in terms of animation, but that doesn’t have anything to do with this right now so forget it. Anyway, this will probably come after Lucky Star and Suzumiya Haruhi season 2, which will most likely be next year (2008). And as many people have mentioned, Air is ’summer’, Kanon is ‘winter’, while Clannad is ’spring’. If this had any accordance with Japan’s actual seasons (which Kanon does, as it aired in winter), Clannad will probably air some time around this time next year.
