Sky Girls: Episode 18

Rating: 8/10

Impressions:

That was unexpected—for once, a serious, or even grave episode, which I think was nicely done. The only real problem I have is the lack of screaming; I can’t imagine that everyone would remain calm if a humanoid freak of nature were to appear before them in dark and tight areas. Not only that, a few new mysteries arise as well. The first is Yuuki’s disappearance—a few episodes ago, IIRM, a creature with a childlike form emerges from the ocean…perhaps that might be the phenomenon of WORMS taking on the appearance of what they first see, and taking into account how Yuuki disappears…

Sky Girls: Episode 17

Rating: 7/10

Impressions:

Ahh, this episode is far too happy. Can no tragedy ever happen in this show? They should have at least given the episode a gloomy feel, instead of playing overly cheerful music while Otoha and the others ‘build their civilisation’. This episode is yet again one to bring Elise and Eika together, but there’s definitely been enough of that. It seems that even after departing on Kouryuu, this show isn’t getting anywhere. It feels a bit like Pumpkin Scissors—even after the show takes a turn towards the true story, nothing really happens until the last few episodes.

Sky Girls: Episode 16

Rating: 7.5/10

Impressions:

I guess Karen’s episode really was the one involving her brother. I’m actually quite surprised we got a Nanae episode—I didn’t expect her to be ‘main’ enough I guess. Regardless though, her little romance story was a pretty good watch, so I’m not complaining. However, regarding the plot, I have to say I’m a little disappointed. So far, the show is still entirely episodic—they need to throw something crazy into the fray and get the anime on a continuous storyline. What I’m concerned with though, is that somehow, even after reaching the climax of the show, Sky Girls will remain heavily episodic.

Sky Girls: Episode 15

Rating: 8/10

Impressions:

So the truth behind Kouryu’s role is revealed, and conveniently delves into Eika’s past at the same time, as her father is involved with the military. I wonder if Karen will get another episode to herself, or if the one involving her brother was it. Regarding Vic Viper and secret plans to have him as the major point man in the war against the WORMs, I’m beginning to wonder whether his previous attack to save Elise a few episodes ago really shows his true capabilities. They claim that the WORM strengthened its outer shell, but I wonder how true that is. I can easily see the Sonic Divers outshining the Vic Viper though, otherwise there wouldn’t even be a story to work on.

Sky Girls: Episode 14

Rating: 8/10

Impressions:

We get another WORM confrontation, but this time, the character behind all the drama is Elise. I personally like Otoha a lot more, so this episode doesn’t appeal to me as much, though with the information we have now, it’s easy to see that Elise has the deepest back-story. I wonder if this truly solves her emotional issues—for one, it would mean a rather large wound to her existing personality. If she simply becomes cheerful and bratty fulltime now, her character would become much less interesting. Hopefully, she’ll have to face her past again some time—I have a feeling that this episode only mends her relationship with Eika.

Sky Girls: Episode 13

Rating: 8.5/10

Impressions:

Wow, watching that episode made me feel really good. Something actually happens now, but not only does a worm attack, we get a little romantic drama between Otoha and Ryohei as well—not to mention the music accompaniment and overall execution is great. It could just be my getting used to the dreariness of Sky Girls up until now, but the excitement generated by this episode comes close to that by the OAV. Hopefully any story that emerges will have decent pacing—we seem to be touching on some sort of conspiracy, but so far, we’re restricted to seeing a little more of it at the end of each episode.

Sky Girls: Episode 12

Rating: 7/10

Impressions:

Ok, I’ve decided to catch up with Sky Girls, and hopefully before the last episode is subbed. I should be able to catch up within two days or so, and then I’ll move on to others like D.Gray-man and Naruto. Anyway, this episode focuses on Karen and her (who would’ve thought) ani-sama. She obsessed over him so much that I wouldn’t be surprised if the next time she opens her mouth, I hear ‘nii-nii’ instead of whatever she’s supposed to say. I kinda wished they would finally meet, but then that would ruin the air of support thing Karen had going on around her. It would be like saying, “I do everything for my brother, so now that I’ve met him, I don’t hafta do shit.”

Sky Girls: Episode 11

Rating: 7.8/10

Impressions:

The new Sonic Diver pilot finally appears, and she’s sporting a rather spunky attitude, probably as a cover-up for the trauma she’s been through, due to the annihilation of her previous base. I have to say, I like her personality a lot at the moment. It’s pretty disappointing that she loses to Eika—I really don’t think Eika’s even good enough to be team leader. At the end of the day, it’s gotta be Otoha who does the asskicking, since we all know she’s the one with huge potential. Eika only won due to her combat experience—the winning move she pulls off is the same one she loses to in the beginning of the series.
