Dragonaut – The Resonance: Episode 7

“I got to reminisce about Amadeus”…she’s not talking about the dog is she? Heh, anyway…this episode turned out to be rather fun and cute, especially between Jin and er…Sieglinde? (that’s what I-Z says). I doubt anything will happen between them, due to the strong resolve that is shared between Jin and Toa (while I’d say the story also relies on their connection to work out properly). Oh and, I can’t remember what I’ve said about the OP in the past (or if I even mentioned it), but it’s really growing on me now (if I liked it in the beginning, it must be due to my failing to keep up with the show lol). The ED isn’t half bad either, and surprisingly I find the slow pacing quite suiting.

Aww, I hate it when something goes in the complete opposite direction of how I envision it go beforehand. A confrontation between Jin and Toa during her depressed stage would have made for a more impacting and dramatic reunion, whereas her being convinced by some stranger only makes me question her will to never see Jin in the first place, and her reasons behind it. In other words, change comes far too quickly in this show. Anyway though, certain things are coming together now (thankfully). It seems that Toa is or is believed to have caused the accident that Jin suffers from earlier in his life. And she’s an alien…does she really fall for Jin? Or is there another connection?

Some parts of this show are actually quite fascinating. While a lot of the others are just plain ridiculous. Yeah, the average breast size mankind beholds at that era, as well as the type of formal clothing worn simply astound me. But the intriguing areas—the climate system on the moon; it distinguishes the extraterrestrial habitation from earth quite well in my opinion. Also, the arms and/or technology race occurring (which mainly involves the Dragons) is also quite fascinating to see, and it’s a shame it’s not being shown on a grander scale (like Gundam 00). And a side note: I wonder what Gio would’ve done to find Toa without Jin. Hmm…another lazy effort by the writers?

Hah, well I’ll ignore the simplicity of the show so far, which is apparent in certain things such as the lack of security at the HQ where Jin and Gio are held, as well as Jin’s sudden expertise at piloting a space ship. And the excuses for such things make the simplicity of the show even more apparent. Well, I’m not really complaining. The animation is pleasant, with the powerful colours and such, while the story is interesting enough. At least the story is actually progressing, despite being so early in the series. The show doesn’t seem very popular at the moment, so I hope it doesn’t take some nosedive later on.

As with most sci-fi/fantasy shows, the introduction’s job is to spurt out random nonsense and nab viewers by spiking their interests, before slowly revealing things every now and then to maintain entertainment value. It’s not a bad thing, just trying to say I have no idea what’s going on at this stage. The concept of humans transforming into mechanical dragons was certainly hard to accept, but if I compare it with some other recent shows (Gurren Lagann?), it doesn’t seem that crazy. And about these dragons, I guess it’s safe to say that Jin will probably be Toa’s pilot. But then there’s Gio, whose relationship with Toa turns out to be quite unknown.

So the CG seems to be a bit of a problem here. I’m not going to say it necessarily affects my enjoyment of the show, but I agree they look far too artificial. Anyway, it’s quite uncommon to see an introductory battle arc that lasts this long, unless it’s one that will ultimately stretch through almost the entire series. The pacing, IMO, is excellent. Hopefully, Dragonaut won’t ease up at all and continue to dish out episodes that will have viewers at the edge of their seats. I feel that Code Geass and Gurren Lagann both have this impacting feature, which is what separates them from shows that start well, and quickly cut down on the action, and ultimately ends badly.
