Zero no Tsukaima: Episode 5

Impressions:
I am getting sick of Louise’s temper and her whip. Why can’t she just realise her feelings for Saito just a little to stop her from going nuts on him every time? I’m sure she already does have feelings for him and just doesn’t know it yet. I was hoping Saito had been able to impress the audience during the fair. It was the perfect time – he had already yelled out in Louise’s defence, which should have made her think “Oh my god! He’s standing up for me, maybe he’s better than I though,” but no, she had to get angry again and drag him off the stage. But then again, just swinging around a sword wouldn’t have impressed anyone in the first place… well, it wouldn’t have impressed me at least. It’s been five episodes and Saito has only been impressive once. Saito better be the one who returns the Staff of Destruction next episode when they go after Fouquet…

To be honest, after watching this episode I’ve begun to root for Siesta. I’m a bit disappointed that she didn’t kiss Saito on the lips, but I wasn’t expecting that anyway as it’s still very early in the show. I don’t like Kirche at all. I doubt she truly likes him, and I hope Saito won’t get involved with her. Louise; I’m not too sure yet. She acts very sweet when she’s concerned for Saito, but that never ends up as more than just concern. When is she going to develop and realise her feelings for Saito? Or will she? This is going to become slightly ‘haremish‘, isn’t it? Now to a random topic that has nothing to do with the romances in the show, the same music that is often played during the show reminds me of ‘The Third ~ Aoi Hitomi no Shoujo’. The theme music both give the same feel, but the two shows are completely different. Anyway, it looks like Saito’s going into a real battle next episode, this time with the talking sword. Yay!

Ok, I’m kinda disappointed that Louise has not in fact developed any feelings toward Saito. Well, if she has and is only pretending to not care about him, she must be quite the actress. Kirche’s romantic life brings a laugh, but I can assume her love for Saito is not ‘true’ love. I do believe she will continue chasing after him, playing out the role of the lead’s rival. Siesta is another story. She does appear to have feelings for Saito, and they appear to be deeper than Kirche’s, but I think this is so only because they are both commoners. As for Saito, I’d say he prefers Kirche for now for her breast, Siesta second as they get along quite well, and Louise and obvious third. The quality remains quite good and I’m beginning to like the OP more, though I still have no interest in the ED (although, I think it sounds better if you play it at 1.5x speed).

Many people are saying Zero no Tsukaima is just like Harry Potter, using the same costumes and sets. I agree – with the robes, large castle, dining hall, old headmaster with long white hair and a beard etc. – but what else can they use? There aren’t exactly many variations in design when you’re dealing with a magic school. They are usually made to look grand and classical. I wonder how it would turn out if a show places magic upon a futuristic setting, which sleek, shiny buildings and flashy uniforms. Anyway, I think people should stop looking at this show’s resemblance to Harry Potter. Take a look at the storyline, the characters and mood, and if you still don’t like it, then don’t watch it. I think that the storyline is quite interesting and the characters are drawn well, but the way they act is slightly abnormal. Saito accepts the fact that he is in another world full of magic far too quickly. Louise really does see Saito as a ‘thing’, as she doesn’t mind getting naked in front of him – that’s just not right. Any normal person, regardless of whether they had magic or not, would still consider something who looks, speaks and acts like a human, a human. But since one of the genres of this show is romance, the fact that Louise does not think of Saito as a human will be an indicator of relational developments later on. When Louise starts to think of her Familiar as human and starts to show some more dignity (like in Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu) then we’ll know she’s fallen for Saito. I believe that this has already begun to develop when Saito fights Guiche.

Release: 07/2006
Episodes: 13
Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Romance
OP: “First kiss” by ICHIKO
ED: “The Real Feeling” by Rie Kugimiya
Impressions:
I will definitely follow this, even if no one subs it. The character designs aren’t too exceptional, but pretty good. The OP is nice, but I didn’t like the ED as it was sung too cutely (by Rie Kugimiya – Louise). The first thing I noticed is that Louise, the main character, is voiced by Rie Kugimiya, the same person who did Shana in Shakugan no Shana. Louise resembles Shana and her ‘Urusai’ sounds exactly like Shana, but she only says it once. ~Sigh~ brings back memories… I hope things will get more interesting soon!
