Negima!? Episode 17

Ah, great episode featuring the revelation of the Black Rose Baron! And very surprisingly, it’s actually Negi’s sister, Nekane! I don’t remember much of her from the manga, so her personality in Negima!? Took me by surprise, though I certainly love her playfulness. And I wonder what it means if she’s actually the Black Rose Baron (I kinda guessed it was a girl from the voice by now though…) Oh, Motsu and Shichimi remain as hilarious as ever—I’m extremely glad that they’re actually in the show. Those two random animals suit such a random show perfectly. Now Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei needs something like that as well…

The transformation sequences are by far the coolest moments in Negima!? The artistic style that SHAFT employs is pretty distinct and memorable. Comedy-wise, this episode once again utilises many random jokes for the kind of ‘WTF?!LOL’ humour. I don’t think there will be any distinct plot any time soon, with the majority of the episodes being episodic like this one. This episode focuses on the relationship between Ayaka and Asuna, which I found pretty nice. I’m not sure if there’s a similar episode, though I do remember Ayaka’s birthday or something in the manga, and that too gives you a pretty good feeling. Then again, Negima!? isn’t something you take seriously.

Compared to the last episode, this one is not nearly as impressive in terms of content, story progression and comedy. The quality isn’t as high either, though overall it’s still an enjoyable watch. It amuses me to hear how the girls have realised there are no other students around, when the anime never showed any other students in the first place. I have to say the students in Negi’s class are all highly abnormal, but this is excellent for the humour’s sake. It’s nice to see that everyone places a lot of faith in Negi now, as they are relieved when he promises them that they will escape the magic world.

That was an amazing episode! The free-fall sequence goes into some of the best animations sequences I have ever seen. It was also quite disturbing though, to see a class of girls kiss the furry rodent that was Negi. This episode overall is quite light-hearted and eventful, with the usual dosage of comedy. The only thing this show is lacking now is some good action, as displayed in the Negima manga, though I doubt Negima!? is going to turn into an action shounen at all. Oh and we’re not out of the woods yet. At the end of the episode, Negi and company find themselves in yet another problematic situation!

Well, plot-wise the episode didn’t go anywhere, but it is full of action and comedy, which more than makes up for it. I don’t think it’s as funny as the last episode, but it’s a lot more exciting. And I’m wondering when Negi is going to return back to normal. He can’t stay a Chupacabra for long as he needs to be in his mage form to initiate the provisional contracts with everyone. And when that happens, hopefully we will get to see their powers! What I hope doesn’t happen is Negi wiping everyone’s memories to regain his magic certificate. That would be a good waste of a few episodes with everyone knowing about everything, though I suspect that is how it will be.

Once again I am astounded by the creativity of the writers of this show to come up with such hilarious situations. I love the two animals (Motsu and something). I love Yue. I love how Yue runs away from Negi then comes running back and smooches him. I also love how Negi is turned into an animal and everyone is imprisoned. I’m extremely glad this show is nothing like the manga, as otherwise it would be pretty boring, and would have end awkwardly, being a 26 episode series. I would love an anime that follows the Negima! manga closely too, and perhaps it will rise to Bleach and Naruto popularity. Almost.

The thing I really love about Negima! the manga are the emotional issues the girls deal with. It’s touching and all, but the real great thing about this is that it is insanely hilarious to see everyone going for Negi, who has probably never liked anyone anyway. They’re already starting to get into that, and it seems the focus has shifted to Yue, my other favourite character (with Konoka). The episode continues with its random hilarity, which I am largely grateful for. The appearances of the Baron has also become ridiculously abrupt and in a joking way. Asuna’s chupacbra crusades are awesome as always, and the general airhead-ness of the girls in Negi’s class create a nice atmosphere to laugh in. I’m still concerned about how Negi’s class seems to be the only class in the school. It’s just too quiet and open sometimes. As long as the show doesn’t focus on one group of girls the whole time, it should be fine. The last moment of this episode is a nice cliff hanger, though I don’t think I will be seeing the next episode today.

Oh finally, more subs of Negima!? have been released! I thought Mahora had died or something, since one day the subs just stopped coming. But this is still bad news, as now they’ve released 4 consecutive episodes in a day, which means I have 4 more entries I need to run through…Well anyway, Negima!? 10 continues on with the mystery of the Black Rose Baron, though does not cease with the hilarious jokes and unique cinematography (sliding cells to show multiple people). Although I feel the quality has not been up to par lately, the short skits are brilliantly hilarious as always, even the subtle humour such as Yue drinking a juice box called ‘Death Juice’. Apart from the humour, what excited me also was the moment when the twins and Kaede initiate their powers from their contracts with Negi. Kaede’s power seems to be the ability to transform into anything she desires, though the twins’ powers are still unknown. It’s also quite nice to see Negima!? diverging from the manga so much, such as making the twins make contracts with Negi. This way nothing is boring or expected.
