D.Gray-man: Episodes 58-71

I have to say I’m loving D.Gray-man now. It’s finally utilising the great potential of the D.Gray-man manga (a shounen work that I actually really like a lot), and is progressing at a faithful pace as well. Hopefully there won’t be a lot of fillers for some time, though admittedly, the anime will catch up relatively quickly if it continues at this speed. The good thing though, is that while it’s using the manga material, the execution and quality have stayed pretty high. I really can’t wait to see more, despite having read the manga already and knowing what happens (I guess this is the charm of animated pictures lol).

I remember saying I liked the previous ED more than the current one, but that’s come to change now, especially after paying attention to the lyrics. Anyway, this episode covers two chapters, and I think we’re now midway through the 7th volume. Miranda’s reappearance makes for a nice addition for the current cast, though the manga version of her seems a lot calmer and reformed than the anime version, but that could just be from the animation part. Aside from her though, I’m beginning to feel that the show really needs some new Exorcists in the party, but having read the manga…yeah. >_>

I’m sure having Allen in such a helpless position is only going to make him stronger later on. Is it just me, or is the pacing really slow? The drawn out moments do add to the graveness of the situation, as well as Tyki’s sinisterness (is that even a word?) Well, it would seem like Allen has died, but we know that’s impossible. In any case, it’s nice seeing Linali get so agitated and upset over Allen’s disappearance. Right now, it’s still just a matter of losing friends, but the friends bit can hopefully escalate later on (though I highly doubt it…and Linali gets a ‘haircut’…ouch).

I’m sure that those who don’t read the manga were positive that Suman would live. This IS a shounen after all, and all signs pointed to him surviving. But D.Gray-man proves true like it did with the very first arc, and killed Suman off. In the manga, he’s never a significant character, but in both versions, I can say this part has been pretty heavy and emotional. But now it looks like Allen is going to face up against Tyki Mikk. This episode covers the two chapters of 53 and 54. The next few episodes are going to be dead serious, and I hope the quality can stay up (at or above the quality of this episode at least).

This is actually a pretty heavy episode. The gravity of the situation is made clear with the emotions of those at Order HQ, as well as Linali. And Suman isn’t putting up the usually generic ‘hero in distress’ façade (in other words, being self-sacrificial), nor is he begging for his life. He’s actually gone crazy, which makes the entire situation more tragic, but that also means more entertainment for us. Another interesting thing to note is Allen’s arm, which seems to have been weakening quite a lot. And now it seems to have ‘died’. I can’t help but smile when I imagine the great things to come. =)

The enormity of Suman’s fallen form makes it seem like D.Gray-man has taken the next major step through its plot. Everything’s on a larger scale now—even Linali. Her new ability certainly is awe-striking, but she’s not meant to have advanced to level two until a little while later. It doesn’t matter much, but it might decrease the intensity of the major battle to come. Speaking of Linali, she appears with short hair in the ED (at the end), which marks the period of time after the current arc. And about the ED, I think I like the previous ED a little better, but it’s pretty hard too compare as neither seems to suit the anime very well. (Btw, this episode covers 2.5 chapters again).

The new OP is pretty good IMO. Currently, I still like the old OP better, but that will probably change once I listen to this new one more. The animation shows a lot of new characters as well, (the character I want to see most is Fou, the girl who goes through the wall in the OP), not to mention some scenes of major battles that are pretty recent in the manga. That certainly looks very promising. I wonder if a certain General that everyone is looking for will appear in the next 25 episodes…If the pacing and percentage of fillers stays the same, I’d say definitely not. Maybe in 50 episodes time…

Now we’re back on track, though the manga material is being stretched out with some minor filler material, which is perfectly fine. Finally, Allen and crew are GETTING ON THE BOAT. Yes, the ship is very important—this is supposed to happen the last time Allen boarded a ship (which made me go crazy as it effectively meant they were diverging from the manga completely). Now, I wonder how many episodes will be manga-material before fillers start taking over again. There are some characters I really wanna see, who appear later in the manga (only a few volumes ahead, but so far D.Gray-man has only covered something like 5 volumes in 50 episodes).
