2006 Fall Season Picks

Yes, there are more fall shows that I haven’t yet put in a preview, and I’m not going to as new series have already begun airing. I know I never really wrote much about what I am personally anticipating, which is what I’m going to do now. First of though, there’s gonna some changes to my per-episode entries. Actually, there’s only one change, and that will be the length of the summary of the episode. Not only is writing it time consuming and tiresome, I also find it quite pointless. Instead, I’ll be writing very brief summaries, usually in the form of a list of the important events. The exception for this would probably be the first episode of each series (and possibly the last), as it helps set the story for the rest of the series. Of course, everything else will stay the same.

Okay, with that said, onto my fall season picks. Although many look and sound good, only a few really stood out. I’ll be listing them in ascending order, which means the series I am looking forward to most will be at the bottom (or is that descending order…?) The titles in this list will most likely be the ones I will be blogging, but you never know…Also, I have to finish off the other half season shows as well as NHK ni Youkoso and Bleach (wait, is 12 episodes half or full season? If it’s full, then that would mean 24 or 26 eps is double season? Sounds logical, but I always thought 26 eps was standard length…oh who cares!) Anyway…

9. Sumomomo Momomo: Chijou Saikyou no Yome

Honestly, I have to say the anime adaptation looks horrible in comparison with the manga (I haven’t actually read the manga, so the reason I say this is that the manga’s art looks so appealing while the anime seems to ruin everything). If it wasn’t for the art (huge eyes etc) this would be more like 3 or 4 in this list. Oh well, at least the story is interesting, a martial arts student suddenly appears in the male lead’s life proclaiming to be his bride!

8. Lovedol: Lovely Idol

I have no idea what this anime is about. So why, you ask, do I expect this series to be good? Because it’s Princess Soft! Well, their not that great really but one of their shows, Final Approach – I absolutely adored! The character design was so good it was a shame it was only 13 episodes of 12 minutes (or something like that). Well, by the looks of things, Lovedol looks like a show with good character design as well. But I’ll just have to wait and see to determine the actual plot.

7. D.Gray-man

I’ve read half of the manga that’s currently out and it’s looking pretty good so far. I always like to watch anime adoptions too just for a sense of familiarity, as well as to see which version is better (obviously manga though). D.Gray-man is about a young male lead who is an Exorcist, who’s job is to fight the Akuma, monsters born from dead souls. Yeah, it’s shounen, but the storyline has potential and the character design is good.

6. Gift Eternal Rainbow

The character design is just too good to ignore. And it’s a romance too, seems like a serious romance and not some ecchi crap. Haven’t seen a good romance in a while now, apart from Strawberry Panic (I guess…) The series is about a town with two special phenomena; one an eternal rainbow, and two, some sort of gift one can give to the other only once…Hmm, not very clear is it? Also, the male protagonist attends a school in this town and meets his sister-in-law who transfers.

5. Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage

It’s the second season of Black Lagoon! What more is there to say? Well, if you haven’t seen the first season, I highly recommend you watch it if you like guns and destruction. It’s only 12 episodes as well. I suppose this season will follow off from when the last finished.

4. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

I’ve been looking for a good mecha and this looks like it has plenty of potential. The character design and mecha design are both very Gungam-like, which isn’t a bad thing. In fact, the character design looks better than Gundam Seed, which I think is the best of the Gundam series. Basically, it involves the male lead called Lelouch, who is involved in some large scale war. The ‘Rebellion’ part would indicate some sort of uprising, though I don’t know the details of the story. Oh, did I mention mecha is one of my favourite genres? That’s a huge reason as why I’m looking forward to this show.

3. Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru

Harem, right? The reason this show is on the list is because it’s harem!! The main male lead (again) is forced to attend an all-girls school by his grandfather’s last will, and he has to disguise himself as a girl to do it. Think of all the possible hilarious and embarrassing moments! Unless the guy gets found out straight away…Eh, even if he does, it’ll still be good. I hope. I heard about this series a few months back and really wanted to see it based on the plot. I guess now I have the chance…fufufu.

2. Death Note

Ah yes, Death Note – awesome manga with shit end. I’d love to see the anime adaptation just to see how it goes and how much of the original content is left in. L and Kira’s battle is so cool (except when *** dies – goddammit I still haven’t gotten over this! Why’d he/she die?? WHY??…….) Anyway, the show is about Japan’s number 1 student, Yagami Light, who finds a ‘Death Note’ which can kill anyone who’s name is written in it, with a certain set of rules of course. Because of this, he decides to play god and rid the world of evil by killing all the criminals off. And to stop him, world’s best detective known only as ‘L’ is appointed to capture Light, who is later dubbed as ‘Kira’. So, it’s the extremely start smart vs. the world’s best detective, and it’s a pretty even match. Btw, Hirano Aya’s voicing Misa! Hoooray!

1. Kanon (2006)

This anime has to be the most anticipated this season. I haven’t seen the original, but there are a number of reasons I am looking forward to this. One, it’s dony by KyoAni, who also did ‘Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu’, ‘Full Metal Panic: TSR’ and ‘Air’. Two, the art is so appealing and the character design looks amazing. And three, the genre – romance/drama obviously, something that will most definitely be very deep and emotional. I discovered this series after the amount of bloggers who mentioned it, and the prelude got me hooked, even though it was just a promo! If that can happen, it must be good!

This is a definite watch for me – at least the first episode. I can tell it’s going to be good because…well, I just know (hope I’m not wrong!) Firstly, it’s got very good character design, second, pretty good quality which means decent-high budget, and third, it’s mecha! Hooray! Seriously, the last good mecha I saw was Gundam Seed. I mean, come on! Not all mecha has to be Gundam right? I had high hopes with Zegapain…but they were just hopes. Same with Innocent Venus – and it wasn’t even mecha at all (well, it was a little bit…) So now, all hope resides in this, and so it shall dare not disappoint…muahaha!

For some reason, I just know this will be one of my favourites this season. And that is not because of how everyone else is highly anticipating this. I never listen to what anyone says (sorry ^_^”) and by that I mean no matter how much a show is belittled, I will try it, and no matter how much a show is praised, I will still try it – all the same. BUT, this is different. One reason is KyoAni is doing it! But I’m not sure of the other reasons…Doesn’t matter though, as I guarantee myself that this show is going to just blow me away.

Looks good and sounds interesting too…must check out. And for some reason, it’s meant to be related to Genshiken, though I don’t see how at the moment…

First thought: this show looks very Gundam-y. I guess the mechas were modelled off the Gundam designs, and even the art is similar to Gundam Seed, though better. Well, that’s what I could discern from the 15 second trailer/promo/ad. I don’t really know what this show is about, except that obviously everyone is involved in some war…lol I’m excited already – been longing for a good mecha series since spring, so this better not disappoint!!

	Black Lagoon – The Second Barrage Airing: ?/10/2006 Prequel: Black Lagoon There seems to be a Black Lagoon sequel, but there’s virtually no information about it. =(
	Lovedol: Lovely Idol Airing: 2/10/2006 Genres: Harem, Love-Romance Studio: Princess Soft OP: “Koi, Hajimemashita!” by Sakura Nogawa ED: “LoveLoveLove no Sei na no yo!” by Sakura Nogawa, Mai Nakahara, Halko Momoi, Yuko Goto, Minori Chihara & Kanako Sakai Official Site: http://www.avexmovie.jp/lineup/lovedol/ Another Princess Soft production, who was responsible for Final Approach and W-Wish. Of those I’ve only seen Final Approach, and liked it a lot (which is quite the opposite of most people’s views), which means I’ll probably enjoy this series as well. 	Negima!? Airing: 4/10/2006 Genres: Comedy, Magic, School Life Official Site: http://www.negima.ne.jp/ This series is not a remake of Negima! (Mahou Sensei Negima!), but uses the same characters, genres and themes of the original. The storyline is slightly different, and supposedly is meant to focus more on magical battles than fanservice. All those Negima fans out there will be delighted about this, though as I didn’t especially like the first one, maybe not for me. (Also, this is meant to be the TV version of the OAV, which won’t air until after Negima!? starts airing. Does that work?)
	Super Robot Taisen OG ~ Divine Wars Airing: 4/10/2006 Genres: Mecha, Sci-Fi Official Site: http://www.suparobo-anime.jp/ The title translates to ‘Super Robot Wars’, and OG stands for Original Generation. This is based off last year’s OAV and seems to be yet another mecha Anime with Gundam-like mechas. The OAV is basically about a war against aliens, where mankind has developed special mecha weapons to combat the enemy. I would be highly anticipating this series if it wasn’t for the very generic summary. I wonder if the aliens are humanoid or not…

Impressions:

Well, first I’d like to say I have no idea how the name of the Anime is spelt. It is spelt differently in different sites, so I’ll just use this one. Anyway, I definitely like the style used for the character designs. Good visuals always draw me into an Anime, regardless of how stupid the summary sounds or how much other people belittle it. Therefore, this is an Anime I am definitely going to check out (though it does bear a tiny resemblance to Zero no Tsukaima, which is not too good a thing in my view). The description sounds interesting, though the type of story line that it employs seems to be quite common. That’s not that a bad thing; just makes it harder to stand out from all the other similar shows. From all the female characters in the series, I’m going to guess that this is a harem. It is definitely a fantasy, with the girl from the moon planet and all, though I wonder how much fantasy elements will be used. Will it be a school life? I think the male lead is a university student, so I’m not sure, though there are scenes in a school environment as shown by the screenies. I would like some school aspects though, as that is one of my favourite genres. This series is one of the highest on my anticipation lists, and I really dread it when those anticipations turn out to be below average shows. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen!

Long ago people settled down on the moon and established a kingdom there, the Sphere Kingdom. However, relations to the earth cooled down and were finally broken off since a war was fought hundreds of years ago. There isn`t any business between the two races and travelling isn`t allowed. The only link between them is to be found in the Mitsurugasaki Central Port City.

However, one day the princess of the moon kingdom, Feena Fam Earthlight, is sent on a “homestay” to the earth. She gets to stay at Asagiri Tatsuya`s house. And this is where her task of learning the customs and lifestyle of the earth begins.

Website: http://www.gamecity.ne.jp/neoromance/tv/corda/ Release: 2/10/2006 Kahoko Hino, a second year high school girl, meets a fairy called Lily, who gives her a magic violin. She is nominated for a music contest at school and from there begins her new life in music.

	D.Gray-man (TV) – above average Genres: Action, Comedy(?), Fantasy, Shounen Website: http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/dgrayman/ Release: 3/10/2006 19th century Europe – there exists Akuma, monsters born from souls of the deceased recalled back to the living world. They are used by the Millennium Earl, whose goal is to ‘cleanse’ the world by killing all humans. Allen Walker, as an Exorcist of the some religious organisation, is gifted with the ability to combat the Akuma and works to rid the world of the Millennium Earl.

	Death Note (TV) – above average Genres: Drama, Mystery, Supernatural Release: 3/10/2006 OP: “The World” by Nightmare ED: “Aluminia” by Nightmare When Raito Yagami (Light Yagami) finds a notebook with the title “Death Note” and realises it is a tool for Shinigami (Death Gods) to kill anyone whose name is on it, he decides to rid the world of evil…

	Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (TV) – high Genres: Comedy, Shoujo Website: http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/yamanade/ Release: 3/10/2006 “Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge”, which can be translated as Perfect Girl Evolution, is based off the manga “The Wallflower”. Sunako Nakahara is a woman fascinated by dark and gory things. Her aunt offers four handsome men free rent in her mansion in hope that they will turn Sunako into a lady. Anyway, here is the first part of the preview of the autumn 2006 season. There are still a ot more to come. Also, as there is very little information on most of these shows, I will be upating them when they get closer to the release date. There are probably quite a few mistaes too… (the high/lows beside the name of the anime is how much I am anticipating it).

Soma Toru roams around this virtual world as part of a hacking group called Steppen Wolf. In an attempt to hack the UN database, his friend is killed and he is captured by the army. In order to free himself, he agrees to work for a UN anti-hacker force, at the same time searching for the person who killed his friend.

	Silk Road Shounen Yuuto (TV) – none Studio: Oriental Light and Magic Genres: Adventure, Historical Website: http://www3.nhk.or.jp/anime/yuto/ Release: 16/9/2006 When young Yuuto visits Qinghai in China, he gets caught in a battle between time-travelers. He is warped to the past where there exists the ‘Silk Road’. I guess his quest is to return to the present. But I don’t care what the plot is, as it’s an all CG anime – ugh! I am definitely not watching that.

	Ghost Hunt (TV) – low Genres: Action, Drama Release: 1/10/2006 Based on a novel from Fuyumi Ono and Shiho Inada. There is also a manga adaptation. In the manga, Kazuya Shibuya researches supernatural phenomenon, being the president of the Shibuya Psychic Research Centre. Mai Taniyama and her friends have become curious in the history of an old high school building, and whether it is haunted or not. Kazuya arrives at this school to investigate the matter, along with a Buddhist monk, a Shinto priestess and a woman who can speak with the dead.

	Galaxy Angel II (Galaxy Angelune) (TV) – above average Episodes: – Studio: Satellite Genres: Comedy, Sci-fi Website: http://www.broccoli.co.jp/ga/game/ga2/ Release: 2/10/2006 A spinoff of the multiple Galaxy Angels series.

	Pumpkin Scissors (TV) – below average Studio: AIC, Gonzo Website: http://rikujyo3ka.com/ Release: 3/10/2006 OP: “Aoki Flamme” by Yoko Takahashi The ‘Pumpkin Scissors’ is a an organization of the new Empire, assigned the duty of aiding with the recovery of the war against the Frost Republic. However, three years later, the group still haven’t made much process. Complaints are thrown at them and theyare dubbed the ‘Excuse Station’, as they are too busy with paperwork and such. To help them comes an ex-soldier from the last war.

	Busou Renkin (TV) – high Studio: AIC, Gonzo Genres: Action, Comedy, Shounen Website: http://www.busourenkin.com/ Release: 5/10/2006 OP: “Aoki Flamme” by Yoko Takahashi Kazuki Muto, a high school boy, saves a gir called Tokiko Tsumura from a giant monster, but ends up being stabbed to death by it. However, he wakes up the next morning and thinks it had all been a dream. He is wrong though, as the monster shows up and attacks him and his sister. Tokiko, the girl Kazuki saved, returns and tells him that the monster is a homunculus created from alchemy. She also informs him that he did die and is ony conscious now because of a subsitute heart, a kakugane, created from alchemy that can combat the homunculus. Using the kakugane, he creates his own weapon to fight the humonculus, which is in the form of a wide lance.

Kanon 2006 Remake: Prelude

The original Kanon was immensely popular … no, that’s just a wild guess. Anyway, I haven’t seen the first one so I have no idea what anything is about. For some information on the story, I suggest you have a look at ANN or something. It’s meant to be a remake of the 2002 version, which means the plot is meant to be the same, right? Well how come it’s 24 episodes now, as opposed to the original 13? Is the story going to be continued in the extra 11 episodes, or is the original plot just going to be stretched? Whatever the case, it doesn’t matter now. Currently, I am very intrigued about Kanon as first, it the studio is Kyoto, which is known for producing some popular titles such as Full Metal Panic: TSR, Air and Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu. After watching the prelude/trailer or whatever it is, I can say it looks a lot like Air, and that’s a good thing as I like that series. By the way the prelude was present; I’d say that the series will have its happy moments as well as its extremely sorrowful and dramatic parts. It’ll have tears of joy as well as anguish. There will be love, relationships and everything associated with that. And so on… Well, that’s just the impression it gave me. I will definitely check this Anime out; it’s my top priority as of now for the autumn season (because I don’t know any other series coming out then) and I am quite confident I will enjoy it greatly.

Things to note:
· Produced by Kyoto Animation, responsible for the popular Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu, Air, Full Metal Panic: TSR, and others.
· The original Kanon (2002) is 13 episodes long with an extra episode after the series finished.
· The first episode will air on the 5th of October (this year of course) on Thursday.
· The voice actors should be the same as the ones from Kanon (2002) with a few exceptions (I think).
· The male lead is voiced by Tomokazu Sugita, who also did Kyon from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu and Mayama from Honey and Clover.
