Bleach ~ When will it catch up to the manga?

Safe for non-manga-readers!

The problem here is that at the rate Bleach is going, it will catch up to the manga before this new arc is finished, meaning more fillers. However, they can’t just stop in the middle of an important arc, so they will probably slot it in between mini arcs. And hearing that, you should already be moaning and planning suicide now xD.

The first 63 episodes of Bleach are from the manga, with a few random single-episode fillers in between. After that, the series goes into fillers, or the Bounto arc. The first 63 episodes covers approximately 180 chapters of the manga. Rounded to an easy number, one episode of Bleach roughly equals 3 chapters of manga.

So far, the manga is up to chapter 260, which is 80 chapters after the chapter 180 of course. Since episode 110, the Bleach anime has begun using the manga from chapter 180 onwards. If the anime continues using 3 chapters per episode, the anime will catch up to the chapter 260 in approximately 27 episodes.

However, in 27 episodes time, there should be another 27 manga chapters. Which means an additional 9 episodes can be created from those chapters. After 9 episodes, there will be 9 more chapters, and thus 3 episodes can be created from that. And finally, from with 3 episodes comes 3 chapters of manga (since both are released weekly), and three chapters equals one more episode.

The hell, when did Ikkaku…? Show Spoiler ▼

That totals 40 episodes before the anime catches up to the manga completely, but I’m speaking very strictly. The producers will probably decide to stretch episodes and use 2 chapters per episode. And they could go back into fillers at any time. However, if they continue on at the estimated speed, the anime will catch up in less than a year. And then the world will end.

As the first half of the Aizen plot (I’m going to assume it’s a half and not a third or fourth for now) is 180 chapters long, we can assume this second half will be of around equal length or longer. According to the above, when the anime catches up in 40 episodes, the 80 chapters of the second half of the manga will extend to 120 chapters. This still leaves 60 chapters left, which will take over a year.

But let’s take a look at the chapters over episodes ratio from episode 110 onwards. Episode 110 covers 3 chapters; episode 111 covers 2 chapters, and episode 112 covers 2 and a third chapters. From the titles of the following episodes, I’m guessing that episodes 113 to 117 will cover 12 chapters. 12 chapters spanning 5 episodes equals 2 chapters and a bit per episode. Now THIS is a good sign.

It looks like the trend to come will be a little over 2 chapters per episode. Or more precisely, the majority of the episodes will consist of 2 chapters, and a small percentage will be of 3. But anyway, from episode 111 to 117 (that’s 7 episodes); about 16 chapters will be covered. Basically 2 and a quarter chapters per episode seems to be how Bleach is going to go from now. And so let’s take that into calculation.

Going back to where I started, there are 80 chapters out yet to be covered. From the new estimate, this will amount to approximately 35 episodes. Much better than the original estimate of 27. Also, after 35 episodes, there will be 35 more chapters equates to 15 more episodes. After 15 episodes, there will be 15 chapters to span 7 episodes. Then another 3 episodes, and finally, one more episode after that.

The new total is 51 episodes, almost a year of anime. The number of manga chapters after a year will be about 310. However, it is still unlikely the second half of Aizen’s story would have finished by then, so I am assuming there will be some fillers in between. Either that, or a large filler arc will be inserted before the big turn in the story…Yes, there’s always a big turn in any story, isn’t there?

Its like I said, Bleach should have just kept going with the fillers, cause its just gonna go into fillers again shortly. Should take a break like Naruto did at least.

Could the potentially let the anime get ahead of the Manga? If the Anime is worth more than the Manga to them that would surely be a possibility.

its impossible to get ‘ahead’ of the manga, since otherwise it would be fillers. and then if the anime goes one way, it will completely screw up the manga storyline that follows. the anime is based off the manga, not the other way around.

therefore, there isnt the slightest possibility of this happening, unless the author of the manga decides to reveal everything to the producers, which will not happen

Interesting post Danny. I have a good idea where they probably will place a large filler arc if/when the time arises.

Those bounto detectors have got to take up some extra episodes here and there!

nice post but you got a couple of things wrong. anime making needs planning. you just don’t go and take two chapters of manga and make them an episode. you need to plan things. like when to end the episode, where to use music and more. you say we are 80 chapters from the manga and the manga still progressing. it’s true that while the anime is running the manga keep going but anime isn’t manga. I read once that to make an episode of amime could take 3 months!!. my point is anime unlike manga take more time to make, needs more planning and the anime makers don’t know what happens next. only kubo tite knows.

Bleach for me is already half destroyed. why make fillers when eventually you return to the manga story only to be 80 chapters behind the manga? why mix fillers and manga when the manga plot/story made the anime popular?
I watched bleach to see the MANGA animated. why will I watch it know? to see fillers? to see the manga story ruined by anime? lol i’m angry!!!

The truth of the matter is that when the fillers come, and there is a high probability that they will, people will whine and be angry about it… but they will still watch them. In essence these fillers actually helps the anime get its “hype” back when the MANGA based episodes arise again. That’s what happened when you decide to run production on an anime based on a MANGA when the MANGA is still in production as well…I just hope the fillers are somewhat interesting and that they don’t mess up the story too much.

[…] This episode runs through approximately two and a half chapters of the manga, which is a nice pace to go at. The remaining two thirds of chapter 190, as well as 191 and most of 192 are used in this episode. It is quite clear that Ichigo uses bankai next episode, though he’s meant to start it this episode, if it had followed through and animated the last page of chapter 192, which it didn’t. Oh well, this probably means they’re going to try and stretch the bankai sequence with some monologue or whatever, which is fine by me. I’d rather the anime go at a slower pace even, as I’ve talked about the pacing in this post. […]

That’s weird though because I remember checking that during the SS arc, the anime covered 4 to 6 chapters per episode and there was a 1 hour episode that covered an ENTIRE volume (Zaraki vs Tousen/Komamura + Byakuya vs Renji). The latest episodes seem to be going somewhere between 2 to 4 chapters per episode and we’ll definitely catch up to the manga before the year-end if this rate keeps up. I suspect the reason why the mod souls are still around is let have a long filler arc involving them again.

If they are going to keep showing fillers then the series will end in like twenty years!

^ That my friend, is how they BOTH make money. Hype and time. Its a business after all. Doesn’t make me any less pissed though… Bleach=crack.
