Bleach: Episode 129

Rating: 8.8/10
Impressions:
Being a filler, I’m pretty impressed that this episode managed to keep my interest level quite high, even though the somewhat slow pacing and lack of any real power struggles made the overall episode rather dull. Either that or my expectations of fillers have gone way done due to the utter failures of many previous fillers (from Bleach and other shows). The quality of this episode is decent as well, and could be considered high for a filler. As usual though, when the quality drops, the most noticeable thing is the badly drawn faces, which are quite apparent in this episode. However, it’s not always fillers that receive this treatment sadly.

I’m not quite sure of the significance of Yui (the little sister), and the preview doesn’t reveal much, but I assume she at least has something to do with the arrancar that has been giving Hitsugaya and the others some grief. The shell Yui plays before dying is perhaps related to, or the same as the sound that the arrancar emits when it appears. Some things are quite confusing though, such as the man which Hitsugaya approaches after failing to tail one of the arrancar bodies. Obviously, with the guy snickering like that, he can’t be someone good. However, I had previously thought that Yui is the arrancar, but with this I have no idea.

If there’s one part of this episode that stands out from the rest, I’d say it has to be the patrolling scenes, which has no dialogue. The ‘calm before the storm’ effect it gives is well presented, and shows that after some 50 episodes of fillers, the producers of Bleach can actually put variety into their episodes. It seems like the scriptwriters put a lot more thought into these short fillers compared to the Bounto arc, which to me was just a simple story of killing off the Bounto’s. This series of fillers is supposed to last a few more episodes, but I have no idea how the story will twist to compensate for the episode count. For now, it looks as if things are just about resolved.

I had no idea that Inoue and Rukia had already returned to Soul Society, as indicated by the ‘Shinigami Illustrated Picture Book’ (which seems to have re-replaced the arrancar information session which Ichimaru held). Yes, this does happen in the manga, and timeline-wise it is correct, so maybe I just missed something in the previous episodes. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like those two characters can be addressed until the fillers end. Speaking of such, the fillers would be much less noticeable if some parts of the manga are woven into them. Even just some more sequences of Ichigo getting his ass kicked by Hiyori would be nice to link the fillers to the manga.

It’s pulling a Stargate SG-1 on us. We’ve deviated from the main storyline, lets bring out the Replicators!
Even the manga is not doing it for me at the moment (You know why, Danny).
Yui’s “Onii-chan” is probrably the only thing that will keep me going. Put the phones down, folks.
Well lets hope that there’s more to this filler story then simply the sister brother thing..it has to be intresting after all, mabye we can see ichigo come out for a while to just kick some ass in his regular shinigami form with short bursts of vizard..i mean its not like that would effect anything, no bankai after all.
@Darkshaunz - HAH xD
I have no idea why Fillers are treated with this much distain, I mean, other than the huge disaster Naruto pulled with the one lump of fillers, most fillers are pretty good….Okay, so the quality drops abit, but otherwise, fillers don’t really make the show sink to rock bottom value unless they are fifty episodes of running around.
Darkshaunz: hopefully we’ll return back to the manga storyline soon, and for your sake, hopefully we’ll see more of Rukia in the manga as well
Inuhanyou: Some vaizard action would be awesome, but definitely no special moves…

Alias: well generally it’s the quality, but for some, it’s the fact that the manga is no longer followed which makes it ‘undesirable’.
im fine with fillers as long as the story and dialogue dont suck bad…
I too agree that an appearance by some of the Vaizard would be a nice sight to see. Being the main Vaizard (I think), Shinji needs some real action time.

The thing that drives me crazy about filler, or more specifically ‘non-manga’ materials, is how insincere everything feels. The writing doesn’t just suck, it seems really stale, especially dialogue which comes out forced and ham-fisted. I thought I was fine with it for a while, as long as the writing was funny (One Piece filler is usually hilarious, if nothing else), but it’s too easy for filler to deviate character development! ACK!
Sorry, that’s my $.02(US). Ignore me.
