Bleach: Episode 119

Rating: 9.2/10

Impressions:

Amazingly, 9 pages worth of manga was converted to a full episode of Bleach, but of course that means most of it was filler. However, it is a filler that explores the past of Ikkaku, Kenpachi and others, even though most of it is actually made up. But that doesn’t matter now, since as it has been shown on TV, it is fact now. Anyway, this episode covers half of chapter 206, and the only non-filler areas are when Kenpachi lectures Ikkaku about living after beating the crap out of him, and Renji asking Ikkaku to become a captain. The rest is all new from the anime. Quality wise, this episode is definitely only of Bounto-arc-level animation, though some fights were animated very nicely.

Yumichika never appeared in the flashback in the manga, so I guess the Bleach animators just tried to make him look as different as possible. But I have to commend that he does look a lot more old fashioned, (the obvious long hair and the robe…almost like royalty, if that did exist) which is how he is meant to be all the way ‘back in those days’.

Speaking of which, I wonder how many years ago did Ikkaku and Kenpachi first meet. It would be nice to know how strong Kenpachi was at that time as well. A ranked officer definitely, maybe that of a vice-captain’s level. It wasn’t revealed how long after this meeting before he defeated Squad 12’s captain as well, so his power could’ve increased a lot in that time.

One question I’m sure a lot of people are curious about is how strong Yachiru really is. Is she as strong as Ikkaku? Can she use Bankai (is it hidden)? Maybe she’s only vice-captain because of her intimacy with Kanpachi. But that doesn’t matter this episode, as I was only intent on seeing how cute she is (and she is definitely a fun character to watch as well).

I wonder how true Renji’s relationship with Ikkaku during the flashbacks are…And even after Renji is appointed vice captain, he still treats Ikkaku (3rd seat) like someone superior (which is actually not that unusual). Nevertheless, it’s interesting to see how all the characters got to the present time/setting of Bleach. Next episode, the fighting continues!

Hehehe… Renji’s forehead is SO high up.

Question. Are they Shinigami when they fight in Rukongai? Why is Ikkaku’s Katana then looks like his Zanpaktou now? Are they the same in Shinigami theories? :o

I’m abit confused with Renji’s membership in Gotei 13. First he is from Aizen’s squad, then transfered to Kenpachi’s squad, and is he already a vice-captain of Byakuya’s squad when Renji was introduced in Bleach?(When Renji and Byakuya came to capture Rukia back to Soul Society). Utterly confused!

Kev, they are only ‘officially’ shinigami if they take the course and pass the exams etc, but im speculating that they already have their powers when they are in rukongai (how else did kenpachi get his powers? he never went through shinigami school or anything)

im not too sure about renji either, but i do know that he has swapped squads quite a few times. but remember, many years have passed since renji became a shinigami (since age a lot slower, or maybe they dont age at all…)

If I’m not wrong Yachiru doesn’t have shikai even because she follows Zaraki absolutely. I read it in the character bios I think, where they mentioned she passed the exams without knowing the name of her sword.

Kenpachi looks much more cool with this new hairstyle though. I wanna see Renji and Ichigo’s fight! Anyway, I fear Hitsugaya’s Bankai will run out before he can kill the Arrancar. =|

Yumichika DID appear in the manga, it’s just that he only had two panels, one was him from afar (and the panel was mainly about Ikakku and Kenpachi anyway) and one close-up.

alkanphel: it would make sense at least, and this makes me wonder whether we’ll get any major kenpachi and yachiru development some time in the future (such as them learning the names of their zanpakutos)

Kev: im just looking forward to the events AFTER the fight :-D

greyrock: ahh really, i never noticed (was this during the flashbacks though?)

Yep, Yumichika was in the flashbacks too. Notice the person sitting on a rock behind ikkaku while Ikakku’s on the ground bleeding and looking up at Kenpachi. It might look like a woman, but that seems like Yumichika with long hair and robes.

alkanphel: Well, considering how she was brought up by Zaraki, I betting that her fighting style is similar to him as well; that is, hgih spritual power, no shikai or anything like that.

Kev: Well, if my sources are right, upon acceptance into the shinigami acadamy the students should already have a Zanpakuto, even if they don’t know their name. So it wouldn’t be surprising to have people in rukongai with a zanpakuto.

It could just be a normal weapon though. Like how Ganju carries a blade around but I’m pretty sure it’s not a zanpakutou nor is he a Shinigami.
